Discussion: UK Politics

So wonderful it wasn't even talked about at the referendum, so wonderful he promised he had an oven ready trade deal at the general election, so wonderful that Farage was banging on about the debunked GAT 24 clause less than a year ago.

Give it a couple of weeks and they'll be banging on about Dunkirk spirit and how there were shortages during the war too. The whole leave campaign was built on making our lives better and yet here we are hoping for a best case scenario where some things may stay the same as they were.

Is there no way of saying "That was a stupid idea. Let's trash it and go back to how it was." This thing has been kicking around for ages. You'd think there would be a way to reverse course.
I wish there was but it's not looking likely.

I am quite happy there is no simple way back for the UK (well mostly England). After what they pulled there can't be just going back to the way it was. There is too much distrust and disdain to reconcile in such a short amount of time. Scotland and NI would be very welcome tho.

Being from the US, I'd like to think there's a way to make reparations for stupid mistakes without being on the dunce list forever. That being said, I can certainly understand why there would be wariness among our European allies once Biden becomes president. Who says we aren't going to elect another moron? All countries make mistakes; often by slim margins when it comes to votes and it's better to look for solutions than just write people off. Everyone will be better off for it in the long run.

The English wanted and got special treatment while in the EU. At the same time domesticly they blamed the EU for their own problems.
Economically it sucks that they are out but other than that it is good.
And if they come crawling back and want to rejoin they can kiss the pound good bye. I will cherrish that day when it happens.
The constant spread of lies and xenophobic attacks by their govening party can't go unignored.

And how do you feel about how the US treated Europe over the last 4 years? Should we renew and repair alliances?

4 years of Trump sucked but it can be repaired to a certain extend. Don't think we can ever fully rely on the US ever again tho. The possibility that elect someone like Trump again because the way the republicans are trendig is just too high.
Thats why i am in favor of creating an EU army to cut back on our reliance on the US for defense.

Anything can be repaired to a certain extent. It just depends how willing you are to reach out. Any country that elects its representatives in an even slightly democratic manner risks electing the wrong person. Probably even yours and probably very, very many of your neighboring countries.

In any case, my personal political beliefs are that acting in concert with others is generally more productive and am prone to laying aside old differences and focusing on the future.

Sadly my friend you have hit the nail on the head, this whole thing is about the long standing belief in English exceptionalism and a reluctance to move on from the Empire and the war to accept our new place in the world.

So, it looks like a deal was made.

Its better than no deal, but not by much. And it seems to screw Scotland, so, they're leaving.

I think Trump is a raging narcissist who doesn't give an F about the over 300,000 dead people or really anything but himself. Boris seems more like an incompetent buffoon. What's your take? I can't really tell because I don't follow him on a daily basis.
“Incompetent buffoon” summarises him perfectly. Trump is that also, with a lot of genuinely nasty and criminal stuff on top.
