Hellboy Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen

So I seen this last week with my buddy who already saw it because it was discount Tuesday. I went in with low expectations and honestly I thought it wasn’t as bad as the critics made it out to be. It still wasn’t that good of a movie tho.

I will most likely buy it on blu Ray because I have the other Hellboy films on blu ray so I kinda feel like I have to have it part of my collection. Anyway I’ll give it a 6.5/10

Saw this opening weekend with my mom but haven't been on here in forever. I liked it. It's not great, or even that good, but it gets the character, adapts things I've always wanted to see, so as pure fan service I had a good time. It had some cool monster effects, I dug the use of long takes throughout, the cast was solid. I'd watch the hell out of a sequel, but I doubt it'll happen. But who knows, I'm pretty sure the first 2 weren't breaking the bank either. I'll buy it when it comes out. Also, baba f***ing Yaga.

He also said this, which I can see his point but Hellboy’s failure had nothing to do with Marvel. If it was the only comic book movie released this year, it probably still would have bombed.

He said: "The problem that I have with comic book movies nowadays is that I think, and it's a result of the power of Marvel stuff, it's like chocolate, it's a flavour.

"So everybody goes chocolate is delicious and these guys make the best chocolate. So as you judge the movies, it's like, 'Well it's not as chocolatey as this, this does not taste like chocolate at all'.

He's not exactly blaming Marvel, but any and every comic book movie that comes out gets compared to the MCU.

I really enjoyed this Hellboy. Harbour was great, and I loved the visuals and level of violence. It's a shame because I'd love to see a sequel.

Just watched this - quite the disappointment.

Harbour got the character right and was probably the only good thing about the film. The editing was atrocious, the CGI was bad and the characters were really boring. Can't believe even McShane was phoning it in. Nimue's sidekick - Gruagach, often had me laughing in how unintentionally hilarious he sounded.

That being said, this had potential and some cool stuff in it - the giants battle was good, the last 40 mins of the film were quite fun and the monster designs and hellish atmosphere was quite good and dark.

Overall - around 4.5/10. That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing Harbour again in a proper Hellboy film.

4/10. The acting was bad, dialogue, so was writing. None of the characters were likeable. The positives were some of the action, monster designs. That's it. Would not want to see a sequel.

I think this reboot had a lot of potential but was ultimately let down by a weak script & a meager budget. An additional $5-10 million for makeup and CGI & another pass at the script, and I think this could have launched a new franchise for Hellboy.

David Harbor is great as the title character, but the supporting cast left a lot to be desired so I would recast most & add more characters.

The story, I think, would have benefited from less f-bombs & tough-as-nails characters (Alice, Broom, Daimio, as well as Hellboy all included). We don’t need an opening monologue with Professor Broom cursing. Softening their personalities & including Kate Corrigan to provide exposition for the occult (and work as Broom’s apprentice), as well as adding Director Manning as a fun antagonist (not villain) for Hellboy to banter with.

David Lowery would have been a great alternate director. Just look at his upcoming Green Knight—the cinematography would have been stunning & potentially rivaled del Toro’s visuals from the original.

And this needed a subtitle!
