The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

Different strokes. When I first saw him in The Politician, I was shocked to learn how young he was, as I thought he already looked about 30. As I get older, 20-year-olds seem to look more and more like children to me, and that definitely ain't him, lol. David has an Old Hollywood look that makes him seem way older to me, idk. The voice and the way he carries himself certainly helps.

Maybe the pictures I looked at from Google aren't recent, literally only looked at the first bunch that came up on in the images tab, he definitely didn't look anything remotely close to 30 in any I looked at but as I said, they could have been from a couple of years ago for all I know.

There are indeed a lot of pics on Google that appear to be a bit old. His face has matured a lot in that time, imo. I saw some YouTube sketch show he did when he was about 21-ish and he’s really grown into his features since then. I recommend checking out one of his recent Netflix seasons before making a judgment. He definitely looks like a grown man now, imo. Even back in the first season of the Politician, where they tried to make him look like a high schooler and failed spectacularly, lol. Far as I’m concerned, all he’d have to do is bulk up, and he’d be the spitting image of Superman right now, even more so than Cavill, imo.

God his suit is ****ing horrible. Hoechlin is a good Superman, and he’s obviously ripped, but he really exemplifies why it’s important for Superman to have broad shoulders. The dude is ripped but he looks small in the suit because he doesn’t have broad shoulders like Reeve, Routh, or Cavill.

I’ll go to my grave saying that those stupid cape clasps are an eyesore.

I know most people here have a toner for Cavil and anyone that resembles Cavil but for me I want a Superman that has a more gentle look to him, I also like the earlier days of Superman/Clark.

He is also very charming and cute. Ill probably get shot for this but so be it :)

He is 5"10", too short I believe
Movie magic. Plus in my story he doesn't face any superman villains so he doesn't need to have a super big presence plus it is more of a young Clark so his height I think with some movie magic would work.

A Superman movie where he doesn't face any villains?? No thanks...already had that in Returns

What would you guys think about Daisy Ridley as Lois Lane?

I originally had Alison Brie as my pick but I think the age difference between her and Corenswet would be a bit too much.

I had considered ridley but then at the same time I couldn't convince myself of it.

Have we talked about Matthew Rhys as Lex?

No, but we should! Aside from being a great actor, he's got a great voice for Lex, imo. He's always playing these world-weary protagonists, but I've always found something a bit sinister about his voice.

Good suggestion. Very versatile actor who usually plays good guys but he can also play a pretty slimy A-hole (his guest spot on Girls was phenomenal). I’d be down for this.

I could see him as Lex. He was great on The Americans.

He'd also make a great Brainiac. He can play cold and clinical very well.

I think his wife Keri Russell could have made a great Lois Lane, though age wise , she might be out of the park for a reboot now.

Keri auditioned for Superman Returns. You can spot her in the background in a behind the scenes clip of Brandon getting a Superman haircut.

Actually she was just helping them out doing Brandon’s audition with him, similar to Amy Adams helping Nolan out on the Batman Begins auditions. For some reason they replaced Russell’s audio with Bosworth's on the making of though.

You might be right. I though she and Claire Danes were up for it. She was interviewed about not getting the role, said she would have love to have done it, although she might have been referring to Flyby because she mentioned three different directors. So maybe she was up for Flyby and was brought over to Australia which she also references and merely just part of the process.

Supposedly Spacey recommended Bosworth. There's a behind the scenes video where the producers talk about contacting Bosworth's representatives. I believe that was December 2004 and Routh was already cast. So they might not have officially auditioned anyone for Lois and just used her as a reader for Brandon.

She may have been up for Flyby, tbh she’d have apbeen a great Lois much better than Bosworth.

Yeah I heard Spacey wanted her, sounds like it was a “cast this woman” or I won’t do it type deal.

Its funny I’ve been thinking a lot about Flyby lately looking for the scripts. Imagine how different the superhero cinematic landscape may have looked has Flyby happened. To think it only didn’t happen cause McG was afraid of flying. The irony haha.

There were so many almost Superman films back in the day, some of them competing against each other. From Flyby to the original BvS with Wolfgang Peterson. It's crazy to think how Superman Returns was the one that got made.

As for casting, back in the day I remember fan casting Evangeline Lilly and Michelle Monaghan. There was support for Rachel McAdams for MOS. If there is a reboot one of the fun things is to fancast.

Yeah & WB played BvS against Year One & Flyby at one stage.

Rachel McAdams was my Fancast for Lois for so long, she’d have been brilliant,

Good God... so we could have had Keri Russell or Claire Danes as Lois Lane but we ended up with Bosworth? Ugh. Although the characterization of Lois in SR was so awful that I doubt even those actresses could have saved it.

I remember all of those false starts for Superman back then. Flyby had a ton of problems, as did that BvS script. But probably either of them would have been more interesting than SR or the BvS that we got.
