Eternals Eternals at the Box Office

No one is turning you into a villain and no one is asking to change your opinions. As far as I know, I stay on topic and you are constantly making it about you.

Anyway, I'll stop responding to your posts in this thread as you already derailed this thread by making it about you.

Wait.......what?!
But I agree. I won't respond to you any more.

I'm going to guess around Doctor Strange 1 numbers. Hopefully there's a better match-up of comedy and serious moments in what should be a "epic" scale movie like this (thought the humor in Doctor Strange 1 was pretty terrible and jarring with the rest of the movie).
I'm hoping this would be one of the more serious mcu movies. The comedy of mcu is mostly came across as flat and corny.

I wouldn't pin any hopes on the X-Men of FF just yet. I get the feeling the X-Men in particular may be polarizing and controversial among the fandom as Marvel gets more 'woke' going forward. See Star Wars, Captain Marvel, Birds of Prey. In other words, the MCU X-Men (if they use Men in the title) may be as unrecognizable to some as the Fox-Men are (obvious degrees of relevancy apply.) I'm looking forward to the unknown franchises over the popular ones for this very reason. Less controversy. They have a much cleaner slate and much less expectations to surprise us all.

The box office for every franchise will seemingly under perform going forward as long as the coronavirus gets worse and isn't contained.

Hmm. I think in the films We'll likely get Shang Chi, Eternals and Blade as the brand new faces but after that it's probably the time for the mutants and the first family to join the party. Unless somehow, they upgrade Hawkeye, She Hulk and Moon Knight to a theaterical release.

I wonder if ETERNALS will be moved to May - which would help its box office I should think. I am worried that less than ten months will not be enough time to do SHANG CHI justice - since little if any work had been done on it prior to the shut down - so I could see the entire calendar shifting once again.
Of course I guess worst case would be BLACK WIDOW not coming out in Nov 2020 and then it taking back its May spot in 2021...

If Widow is delayed it should only go to February in which case Eternals would take May

Anyone else think it won't be released in China due to the director?

If none of the movies get delayed, I think Eternals will be #1 at the box office only for opening weekend. The following week, Ghostbusters Afterlife comes out and then the week after that is Top Gun Maverick. Both of those movies target a similar audience as Eternals. Adding to the fact that China is probably not getting the release, the box office for Eternals is not looking great IMO.

This won't cross a billion. 600-700 million worldwide.

Which, given the circumstances, really wouldn't be a bad total. Pre-pandemic would be a different story. Even at that time, not hitting 1B isn't necessarily a bad thing.

LOLOLOL.....your post WAS pre-pandemic....sorta.... Duh me.....

I think it would have done slightly better than that and will do worse now, but we'll never know about the first.

Like Shang Chi it’s not visible as MCU movie for the average audience. People expect Captain America, Nick Fury, Black Widdow, Thor or the Guardians for a MCU movie.
Even in non pandemic times it probably wouldn’t have crossed a billion.

Before you call me a hater: for me Eternals was my most anticipated movie in 2020 and now 2021…but I don’t expect, that the average audience knows about it

The trailer views are pretty good. I think Disney's marketing is a lot better compare to other studios. If this movie is being released by Sony or the old foX, this would be a guaranteed flop.

In these strange times we live in it’s hard to predict a BO result for this. So many different things in play but I think Shang Chi BO performance can shed a light on what to expect with the Eternals.

Regardless of the BO I think Marvel has another critical acclaimed hit on their hands.

The boX office performance of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings should serve as an indication to the boX office performance of this. But Angelina Jolie + Marvel should be enough selling points for the casuals regardless of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' reception.

But like Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, I just want it to cross the 100 million mark in North America.

I think Eternals could have made somewhere between 700-800M in normal times. Now I have no idea what it will end up doing. There's also a good chance that China won't release it in their theaters because of Chloe Zhao.

All of Chloe Zhao's films are probably banned in China now. The government of that country just doesn't take criticism very lightly. She would have to address a public apology to the Chinese government before Eternals gets released there and thats IF the Chinese government accepts it.

A poster from China at BOT forums said that Zhao's name is no longer being censored on Chinese social media so maybe there has been some sort of reconciliation.

I think it might have gone north of that, but we'll never know. I liked the last trailer and think Marvel was smart to draw such direct lines to The Avengers. That wasn't necessary, but think it will help with interest. It certainly helped pique my interest.

The question I have is "What constitutes a good BO performance?" and, I think that right now, we should probably use BW as the benchmark. She was a well known, reasonably popular character and if the other new Marvel movies can get in that ballpark, I think that should be considered adequate.

EDIT: Adequate is the wrong word to use. Very, very strong is more like it. I think, for example, if Shang Chi were to get in the 40M+ range OW, they would be happy with that. Depending on the circumstances with COVID, they will expect more from Eternals, but I don't think they expect either to hit BW numbers.

If it gets a sequel then that could mean Disney is happy or at least willing to ignore boX office shortcomings.

OTOH, lacking a sequel wouldn't necessarily mean much, these days. Partly because they have so many properties to pursue, and partly because Disney+ opens up the option for non-movie continuations. So "movie sequel announced" is good news, but "no movie sequel announced" is not necessarily bad news.

The only properties that didn't get a sequel are Hulk and Black Widow but we know the situation of those two.

Not getting an Eternals 2 would look like a failure in some way especially this is an obscure ip. I don't think Marvel Studios had an intention to greenlit it just for it to be a 1 and done. While a D+ continuation /D+ only release for the continuation, would feel like a downgrade and it would limit its audience reach. Are the release of WandaVision/FalconandtheWinterSoldier/Loki even as popular as Black Widow? I even heard more chatter from the public, for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings than those shows.

I tend to agree. Some movies are made to be one and done. While Marvel hasn't done a lot of that in earlier phases, it doesn't mean phase 4 will follow that track. As you say, there are a lot more properties to pursue and both of 10 rings and Eternals could be stand alone setup pieces for what is to follow.
