"Trump losing traction. As his support drops precisely where Covid-19 is hitting hardest, he defaults to his elemental white supremacy. He lashes out against anti-racist protesters, creates barriers to immigration, defends racist names for sports teams. But it's all falling flat. And it's doing so for a simple reason: he's being battered by a multiracial working class rebellion against racism and police violence. Herein lies a basic political lesson. When masses of oppressed people start rewriting the rules, a wealthy, blustering 'bunker boy' can no longer control the script. It's been flipped. POTUS keeps throwing out white nationalist red meat in an effort to regain traction. But it no longer works. And it won't so long as the insurgency is driving things. The conditions which made this 'grotesque mediocrity' into a hero (to quote Marx on Louis Bonaparte) have evaporated. So long as Columbus, Robert E. Yep. That is why every parody falls short. You can't invent this. It's all too real to be parodied, even as it all plays out like a parody.

Man, I hope this is right. But my fear is that this statement discounts the sheer volume of racists and nationalists in this world. There is no shortage of people who are being galvanized by their little insecure worlds being threatened because a football player knelt during the national anthem or a sports team decided that their nickname was racist and needed to be changed. The question is whether there are enough of those people to re-elect him.

This is the real question, isn't it? Personally, I'm bolstered by the fact that Trump is one of the most unpopular presidents in history. That said, history tends to show that the rise to power of the right follows the inability of the left to take power.

The problem of American politics is that there is no effective "left". The Democratic Party would be considered a centre-right party in Europe and Canada. Fascism requires the existence of a militant and powerful left; if one doesn't exist, it is compelled to invent one. That's how we get absurdities like Trump pretending that millionaire Nancy Pelosi is the spearhead of a communist revolution.
