Game of Thrones General (Non-Book Related) Discussion Thread - Part 1

That would have made all the difference, but there's still Dany's speech to the Dothraki and Unsullied in the final episode that paints her to be a warlord.
I think her speech was meant to be an indication that she was going to go too far. Preceding it with her deliberately slaughtering KL makes her speech a lot more delusional sounding and insane, because it's as if she really believes she didnt just slaughter a city.

Dany turning into the final antagonist feels like a GRRM thing, since there’s been more than enough foreshadowing for it in the books.

the problem is, D&D basically wrote her as a CW protagonist for most of the show and whitewashed her crueler acts and struggles with mental illness so this last minute turn feels more like she lost her **** ultimately because Cersei and Euron trolled her rather than the culmination of a long list of ****.

I’m actually pretty certain Cersei’s not going to meet Dany in the books and this whole conclusion will be with her and FAegon.

I wouldnt rule out that KL is destroyed before Dany even reaches it. Instead of arriving as a liberator or a conqueror she'll be arriving and finding a charred ruin and a lot of desperate starving people.

And there is Euron to consider. If he really wants a massive blood sacrifice KL could be his altar.

But let's say FAegon does gain control of KL, do you think there is any chance Dany will fall in love with him rather than Jon? She arrives and he charismatically offers her a political marriage proposal rather than a fight. It seems like the type of thing book Varys might want.

Let’s look at what we know from TWOW.

Tommen has sent the Tyrells and Randyll Tarly to retake Storm’s End from FAegon and Jon Conninngton. It’s almost certainly going to be Golden Company win, and there’s a good chance that Tarly turns his cloak given that he’s shown misgivings with the child king Tommen and Mace Tyrell took credit for all of his victories during the Rebellion, something that numerous characters have noted.

So FAegon’s got a win there, and that would mean a direct path to KL. Given GRRM’s comments that the Iron Throne will change hands a few more times before the story is done and the prophecy of people cheering the Mummer’s Dragon, it’s likely that he’s on a path to sit the Iron Throne and rule as a false saviour type. He’s one of the lies Dany must slay.

Likewise, Euron’s on the other side of the continent, trying to take Oldtown for the vault of magical knowledge that’s there and the Horn of Winter which is in that area. At the moment his character arc seems to be more focused on bringing down the Wall and unleashing the apocalypse.

Also, you’re forgetting the entire Martell plotline. They want justice and a Targaryen Alliance, but Quentyn’s death at the end of ADWD has effectively burnt their bridge to Dany. FAegon showing up, claiming to be Elia’s beloved son returned from the dead is an attractive prospect for them. Plus Arianne is literally on her way to meet with Aegon as of TWOW, and given what that character’s like, I think it’s more than likely she’ll seduce Aegon and end up as his Queen.

I genuinely don’t believe Cersei will even get her Trial/Wildfire moment. When Aegon and Arianne (the younger and more beautiful queen) roll up with the GL/Tarlys/Dorne she’ll have her meltdown but it’ll be for nothing because Jamie will end her in the same way he ended Aerys.

And if you look at Dany’s arc in the final season of the show, part of her undoing was her identity crisis when faced with the possibility that she wasn’t the true Targaryen heir. That becomes far more of a natural story element when it’s her direct rival who is undermining her role as the Targaryen saviour than it is the love interest who is fundamentally on her side.

what show did, I suspect, is divide Aegon’s role between Cersei (as her direct enemy who drives her to the edge, has the Tarlys/Golden Company in opposition) and Jon (the source of her emotional turmoil that undercuts her association as the last hope for the Targaryens).

After dealing with all that and FAegon I dread how she is going to react when she finds out Jon is a Targaryen. She's likely to assume he's another fake, and react extremely poorly.

I wonder if Jon will know who he is before he meets Dany or if he will find out after they meet? If he goes to her knowing he is the heir and doesnt tell her and befriends her and then she finds out that's going to be one hell of a blow out.

I have a feeling he might not know right away when he meets her, because of the incest.

But I have to assume, also, that how Jon learns his heritage will be very different from the show. The stuff with Rhaegar annulling his marriage to Elia and disowning his children by her doesn’t really work with the established setting of the books, so it’s got to be something else that tips the characters off.

So you think Rhaegar annulling his marriage and the secret marriage to Lyanna may have been a D&D creation?

I think there's a good chance of that. It's a pretty absurd plot contrivance to imagine any septon being willing to do this, especially when the Targaryens are on the ropes. And given the inanity that was "Aegon," it's clear they made up at least part of that story on their own.

Rhaegar could have strong armed a septon into doing what he wanted. Either that or the septon was a friend or loyalist.

A septon actually doesn’t have the power to annul a royal marriage. Only the High Septon could do that with the full blessing of the Crown and Faith.

I think what’s more likely is that Rhaegar married Lyanna in a ceremony that was in accordance with the Old Gods (and thus had no priest or holy man involved) and his plan was to just to later convince everyone that it was ok based on Targaryen polygamy.

Rhaegar seemed intent on the Dragon having Three Heads. The implication is that he heard the prophecy his interpretation of it was “I need to have an Aegon, Rhaenys and Visenya as the Three Heads of the Dragon” so I don’t think he would have disowned his older children.

That... *sighs* ... that’s completely right.

I'm doing a rewatch of the series for the first time in three years. I was worried that my mixed reaction to the final season would tarnish the rest of the show for me. Luckily it doesn't. It's still worthy of being one of the greatest shows of all time. I'm also finding myself enjoying the first half of season 5 a lot more than I did the first time it aired (I still don't like the Sand Snakes though). At the time, I wasn't fond of the pause in momentum after how fast paced season 4 was. Ironically, the rushed pacing is my biggest grievance with the later seasons.

Was there ever a thread about that House of the Dragon spin-off? Anyway, production looks like it'll kick off next year.

I’m honestly more sceptic about a new GOT show after the last season, than I was toward SW as a whole after TROS nonsense - and I was pretty sceptic about Star Wars after JJ’s mess.

I can't wait, huge fan of the broader ASOIAF universe - I'd cut off my left pinkie for a Dunk & Egg series. while it certainly could go wrong like any show could and doesn't have the same incredible source material to work (not that Fire & Blood isn't great in its own way) with it's important to remember virtually the only things that went wrong with GoT were D&D's fault.

That shows problems were largely due to self-sabotage, I don't hate D&D the way most fans do - my relationship with the final season is complicated and not strictly negative - but their... quirks and failings were always the shows biggest issue. Perhaps I'm biased because ASOIAF has been one of my main fandoms since long before the show but as long as they're not involved the failings of GoT have no effect on my enthusiasm for the future, if anything I want House of the Dragon to be amazing in part so that this universe doesn't stay reduced to a meme about weak endings.

Wish Bryan Cogman was involved in House of the Dragon though. He was the best writer on GoT (aside from some awful work in Season 5 but, contrary to popular belief about season 8, the worst season of GoT by far is five so that was ten episodes of unending ball-dropping on everyone's part) and judging by the quality of his beautiful, somber script in S8 we'd have been in better hands had he been bumped up to showrunner. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms captured something that felt so much closer to the spirit of A Song of Ice and Fire than the show had managed in years.

Good points. And I, while loathing most of Seasons 7 and 8 (I do agree that 5 is the worst overall) am still super hyped for HOD. There's so many fascinating characters and epic battles involved in the Dance I can't wait to see realized. And the best part is that there are going to presumably be surprises for us book readers, since the show will be able to answer some questions in a way that the nature of Fire & Blood couldn't.

Also, the Dunk & Egg books would be brilliant to adapt as HBOMax exclusive movies.

Wonder who had the bright idea of giving it blue eyes?

That's a fake account. I don't think the real Matt Smith would only have 2800 followers on Instagram. This picture is from an ArtStation account of someone who worked on a Chinese dragon show:
