I missed the ASOIAF news while I was in the US but I'm glad they scrapped The Long Night and went with this instead. The other show just screamed repetition off what we had already seen, and a prequel to what was a huge letdown has even more inherent issues.

When I first heard about The Long Night one of the first things I said was that I thought they would go with something about the Targaryens instead, so I'm pleased that it's now what they will do. Conceptually everything is fine so now I just hope that they get good writers and showrunners to wash away the aftertaste of the GoT show.

Targaryen history is just tragedy on top of tragedy on top of tragedy. Doom, dance, summerhall, mad king... and in the end dany is murdered and jon is exiled. Its just so miserable. And no amount of fancy dragon cg is gonna make me forget that. So i dont see myself watching this. Not that HBO gives a damn, they will make plenty of money. But its just my 2 cents.

After what Season 8 did with the White Walkers, you really can't return to them or use them as bad guys again.

I agree im glad D&D are off the project now but I wouldn't have been opposed to revisiting the white walkers. Think it could have been cool to make them a sort of sympathetic antagonist.

Bringing them in to protect the children of the forest and having them slowly becoming more and more violent could have made for an interesting arc I thought.

Im interested to see the Rhoynish Wars if they go down that route. Be interesting to see a new people introduced especially ones like the Rhoynish who were meant to have waterbenders.

If we only count the Targaryens themselves, yeah, not many of them get good endings. But there's still positivity. Looking at the Dance alone - Black Aly & The Lads, Alyn of Hull, Baela and Rhaena, and kind of Corlys (He loses his wife but gets revenge and a chance to mentor the future king) all get relatively happy endings.

Tbh, I would have prefered more lore out side Targaryen Dynasties personally. This show looks to just be politics, **** and dragons.

I'm willing to bet if GOT Season 8 had been loved we'd be getting this in early 2021. HBO wants to let the hatred of Season 8 dissipate a bit.

I'm still trying to read Fire and Blood and it is just not holding my attention. Hopefully this show does a better job. I think I'm just being bitter because Winds of Winter isn't finished yet.

It doesn't help that a lot of it's best sections had already been published in previous anthologies. I stopped about half-way through because I didn't want to reread the same passages again.

I hope the show covers Aerea's journey to Old Valyria, though. Her fate was particularly haunting.

Just taking some thoughts into casting House of the Dragon, if it does in fact focus on the Dance:

Brendan Gleesan as King Viserys I A kind-hearted king who has presided over years of peace, but whose desire to avoid conflict may yet spell disaster for the Seven Kingdoms.

Olivia Coleman as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Heir to the Iron Throne Viserys' only surviving child from his first marriage. Years of rumors, misogyny and family feuds have left her bitter and detirmined to ensure her rightful place and a royal legacy for her children.

Rufus Sewell as Daemon Targaryen, the Rogue Prince Viserys' younger brother. A willful, violent and unpredictable youth shattered the brothers' relationship, which only worsened when he married his niece Rhaenyra after her first husband died under mysterious circumstances.

Timothy Dalton as Ser Otto Hightower, Hand to the King Considered one of the wisest and most learned men in Westeros, Otto has served King Viserys for nearly his entire reign and is father to the king's second wife. But he fears what would happen if Rhaenyra and Daemon take the throne, and secretly plants seeds of dissent in favor of his grandson's claim.

Jared Harris as Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake A legendary explorer and trader who near-singlehandedly made House Velaryon one of the most powerful families in Westeros. Ever since his wife was passed over in the line of succession, he has awaited the day to right past wrongs, and now fears the same fate will befall his former daughter-in-law, Princess Rhaenyra.

Thandie Newton as Marilda of Hull An enterprising fisherwoman and merchant whose bastard sons hold suspiciously Valyrian features.

I like that, but I honestly suck at finding .gifs to try and carry this on with pictures.

But if I could still introduce a couple of possibilities for the rest of this timeline...

...Domhnall Gleason as Aegon II and Timothy Chalemet as Aemond Targaryen.

Aegon II is supposed to be similar to his father, but having Gleeson’s own accomplished son playing the role might offset the lack of physical mass he’s supposed to share with his father.

And since Sewell has a very angular and hard edged kind of look that suits Daemon, Chalamet’s softer features would be a great contrast... and seeing them try and out-intense each other would be fun!

Lucas Hedges as Prince Jacerys: Rhaenyra's eldest son and heir, the Prince of Dragonstone. Raised to one day be king and seemingly ready for the task. Valiant and responsible, a fierce defender of his mother and brothers' honor.

Noah Jupe as Prince Lucerys: The favorite of his grandfather, King Viserys. A youth with a warrior's spirit, noted for early expertise at arms, devotion to his older brother Jacerys and a fiery temper.

Anthony Starr as Lord Ormund Hightower: The ambitious and duplicitous Lord of Oldtown. Famously charismatic, but a poor commander on the field. Determined to do whatever it takes to seat his family on the Iron Throne.

Helen McCrory as Queen Alicent Hightower: King Viserys' second wife. Fiercely protective of her children and devoted to her father. Has long seen Rhaenyra and Daemon as a threat to her family.

Nick Frost as Lord Rodrick "Roddy the Ruin" Dustin: The wild Lord of Barrowton. Faced with a brutal winter coming for the North, decides to seek valiant death in battle rather than freeze in the snow, leading a savage band of Northmen to victory over armies five times their size in Rhaenyra's name.

Ella Hunt as Alysanne "Black Aly" Blackwood: The irreverent warrior sister of Lord Sam Blackwood. As the elder lords fall in battle, Black Aly stands alongside a new generation to take the fight to those who stole Rhaenyra's throne.

I want Ella Hunt for Zatanna on the Justice League Dark show, but I wouldn't complain about her showing up on my TV screen as far as that goes (I don't know the characters to comment).

Glad to find a fellow fan! She would definitely make a great Zatanna, too! Black Aly is one of the main heroes of the Dance Of The Dragons, a fierce, bawdy, bisexual warrior who helped lead the pro-Rhaenyra forces in the Riverlands alongside a legendary squad of young soldiers. She's one of the characters I'm most excited to see in HOD. The Blackwoods are one of the coolest of the lesser Houses.

He was fine on The Outsider, didn't really jump out on me, but I guess it's possible this role would suit him better.

Paddy is a really good actor. I've seen him in mostly small roles such as Misfits and or in low budget films such as Pride!, but he always manages to steal the screen with his quiet charisma.

I'm finding it hard to get enthused about much in the way of the small or big screen these days because of the pandemic, but this is cool.

A great choice. Probably for the best to make Viserys thinner on the screen, to avoid some of the inevitable comparisons to Robert. I wouldn't mind seeing some more Hot Fuzz alum crossover, especially Timothy Dalton as Otto Hightower or Nick Frost as Roddy the Ruin.
