Spencer teases more acquisitions and has played The Initiative's game.

Are you content with the current line-up now, or is there a chink in the armor somewhere? A certain genre, a certain type of studio that you feel is still missing?

If we look at what people are playing on Xbox, what Game Pass subscribers are playing, I think what is missing from our portfolio is casual content with a broad appeal. E-rated content (to use an ESRB rating) is not a strength for us. We obviously have Minecraft and we have some other franchises. But when I think about expanding the creative palette that our teams have, I think that is critically important.

Teams that can build new franchises, tell new stories, those are always sought after. That's why I'm excited about projects like Starfield and the next Compulsion game because I like teams that think about new creations. And frankly, as Game Pass continues to grow, we need to continue to feed that subscription. So, with the growth that we are seeing, I expect we will constantly be in this mode of bringing more creators into the fold.
Without going into too much detail, which first-party studio's currently unannounced game are you most excited for the public to see?

I'm gonna give you two if that is okay? One of them is Compulsion. When I first saw We Happy Few, there was an art style and a setting that I thought was really unique. It's a young studio and they are still growing and learning the craft of what they are as a team. But looking at what they're gonna do next, I love their ability to create new worlds and unique settings. That is always something that is fun. So without saying too much that is one of them.

The other one I would say is The Initiative. Which is our studio in Santa Monica. I've played what they are doing next. Just the talent we have been able to bring into that studio led by Darryl Gallagher is amazing, especially when you bring such an amazing group of creators together, and create such a culture that Darryl is working to create there.

I'm incredibly excited both to be able to form a new studio, to attract the talent we have, and the game that they are working on will be fun to get to announce.

Good. There is a lot of catching up to do and gamepass is going to need more and more content as the years go on and competitors enter the field (as Netflix experienced).

Also this game The Initiative are working on better live up to the hype!
It would be nice if we actually knew what the Initiative was working on! just sayin.........

LOL Yup, sums it up with people now a days.. no patience and then complain when they can not get something right away. Ever hear of a small thing called Covid? Mass producing something during times when things were shut down is no easy task.

You will get one just wait.

Hahaha yeah. Good luck getting a new PC graphics card, PS5, Xbox One Series, or even Switch at a time like this.

Covid aside, it does seem like there has been less stock of Series X/S available for preorder, as well as less chances/waves of preorders.

Also, just going by my own experience preordering at Best Buy, I was able to preorder the PS5 on the initial preorder day, whereas I have been unable to preorder the Series X. And though it took me 7 hours to preorder the PS5 during that cluster**** of a mess, I was at least able to add it to my cart numerous times, before eventually progressing towards checkout. With the Series X, once preorders went live, I was able to only add it to my cart one time. Every since then, I've had no such luck.

At this point, I have pretty much given up trying to preorder the Series X and I doubt I will have much luck being able to get one in the wild at or after launch.

This has subsequently diminished whatever hype, desire, or excitement I had for the Series X, especially as the launch of the PS5, and the games and accessories I've preordered for it, gets nearer. The utter lack of any major reason to get a Series X, 1st or 3rd party exclusives-wise, also doesn't help.

But good luck to anyone who's trying to get a Series X/S at or after launch.

There's some stock at XBox.com for anyone but better be superfast or they could be gone.

I got the XBSX 5 minutes after launch. Just went on over to Walmart.ca and put it in my cart.

But again it comes down to the availability of facilities to build these things. Obviously there was going to be a supply limit because of Covid. It will get better, just not right away. People just need to have patience. Not like there are a lot of next Gen games and such for XBSX right away anways.

I'm glad you were able to preorder one.

I kind of focused all of my attention on preordering from Best Buy, since that is where I have gift cards saved up. I suppose if I had checked other retailers, I may have had more luck. However, since that initial preorder wave, everytime that I have checked Walmart and Target and Gamestop and Xbox.com, I have had no luck.

And yeah, I do agree there really isn't much next-gen to play on the Series X/S now anyways. Plus, I bought a used X1S a few weeks ago, so that also lessens my need to rush out and get a Series X at launch.

Covid was probably more of a convenient PR excuse than an actual hindrance. Every console launch has stock issues to drive up demand. With covid they can restrict stock even more and drive up demand even more at first. Then when gamers get angry they can point to Covid. Besides manufacturing kept going during covid. Especially for essential stuff which computer hardware is.

But my main problem with this launch isn't so much availability as it is with how Sony and Microsoft are handling preorders. Neither Sony nor Microsoft nor any other retailer is allowing anymore preorders at all. They will be making more consoles. They know it and we all know it. They could continue taking preorders with the disclaimer that its not a guarantee you'll get it at launch. That you may have to wait until a later restock. Id gladly preorder an Xbox from a later restock. I just want to get my order locked in so I know I'm getting one as soon as possible and don't have to keep blindly checking retailers every damn day for the next 2 or 3 months.

Spot on!!

My main issue with both the PS5 and Series X/S preorders has been with the whole process itself. And that falls not only on Sony and MS but also the retailers themselves.

Simply put, the retail sites basically broke down during the preorder waves. Basic functionality of buttons and web pages did not work properly or at all. If I, as a consumer, see the Preorder button available to click, then I have a reasonable expectation that if I click Preorder, I will be able to add the item to my cart, checkout, pay for it, and basically PREORDER the item. I should not have to hassle with error messages or the button not triggering anything at all. If you don't have the item available for preorder, DON'T MAKE THE PREORDER BUTTON AVAILABLE FOR US TO CLICK!

Of course, that brings us to your point. Outside of the scant few preorder waves, the preorder buttons on these retail sites have either been greyed out or not even displaying at all. And that's fine, because at least that doesn't give us false hope the item is available to preorder.

But, as you said, Sony and MS could have made additional preorders available on a more regular basis. And that way, we wouldn't have to frantically check 500 different sites all day long just to see if the preorder button is available to click. Because realistically, no one has time to do that every day for several weeks.

Like you said, just let us preorder and secure the console, even if that means we will be getting it at a later date.

Delayed to January 28.

Oh, man. Another hit to the already weak launch lineup. :(

I know that The Medium is a "smaller" title. But it was a title that was next-gen only that would showcase the Series X's capabilities. I know that many, myself included, were interested in this game. Especially in the absence of Halo Infinite. This was like the one Xbox exclusive that had my interest at launch.

The Medium isn't going to be a system seller, but still, it is another blow to the launch lineup.

It's like Kena getting delayed until early next year for the PS5. The only difference is that PS5 still has Demon's Souls, Miles, Sackboy, and even Astro's Playroom to launch with.
