The Official Cell Phone Junkies Thread - Part 2

When is 5G expected to happen? Is it still on course?

Damn, the price tag for the Pixel 4a is quite good for a mid-range phone.

Might look into it to replace my mom's old iPhone.

Hey, had anyone else just had Malwarebytes flag a ton of common safe apps on their phone as PUP, everything from Google Play to Netflix?

Could be actual malware.

I don't think so, because none of my other antivirus or antimalware software is picking it up... And Malwarebytes wants to uninstall basic apps.

EDIT: It was a false alarm. Malwarebytes no longer detects any malware after another update.

That really sounds like something is wrong with Malwarebytes. Maybe their subreddit can help?

Using the 3 right now but it's kind of iffy.

Not gonna lie the Pixel series has been going downhill design wise for me.

You know the trend I hate to see? Punch hole cameras. With the exception being the Galaxy lineup of phones where the punch hole is in the middle, I feel it is just annoying to have the status bar indented the way it is. I really liked the pop-up camera - more secure, cleaner designer.

As for the Pixel 5 specifically, I love the addition of wide-angle to the camera, the sage green color is gorgeous, and I'm so curious how they managed to add wireless charging to an aluminum unibody device. Price is blah for me, $699 for a 765 chip is too much, $549-$599 would have been acceptable.

Galaxy S20+ is probably my favorite smartphone design this year. Z Flip 5G, Surface Duo, and Moto Razr 2 are my faves for foldables.

The S20+ will hold up for a while, great device, although if I'm nitpicking I wish it had a matte back. We also need to call out the Galaxy Fold 2 here, what they managed to do in the version 2 of that is outstanding - all screen on the front, open it up to an all-screen tablet (that damn punch hole though..) Makes me very excited for version 2 of the Duo. Speaking of which, with the Pixel line in decline in some eyes, people feel that Google should go back to partnerships ala the "Google Edition" devices from HTC, LG, Samsung, and if Google does go down that route they should consider teaming up with Microsoft's hardware division. Think Surface Duo Google Edition w/ a Pixel quality camera experience, clean android experience w/ Microsoft software addons for the folding experience. That would be *chef's kiss* perfect.

iPhone 12 is here with Mini, Pro and Pro Max models available.

Apple announces iPhone 12 with OLED screen and 5G speeds

I'm getting the 12 Mini as soon as preorders open up, such a terrific compact form factor. Happy to see the compact phone back, now that Apple is releasing a compact/mini device you'll start to see way more OEMs create a compact/mini variant of their larger phones, guarantee it. This is the true successor to the original SE that fans wanted.

However, it's funny that I haven't seen any Youtube tech reviewer give Apple grief for the lack of 90 or 120hz display on the Pro models that are gonna sell for upwards of $1500 (varies by storage) despite other flagships and even phones that sell for around $500-600 that have the feature. They'll give them grief for lack of USB-C or no power adapter in the box this year, but 90hz or 120hz? That's fine apparently. Just shows how bias and nitpicky these Youtuber tech reviewers are.

Lastly, that Magsafe feature on these models looks brilliant, I'll definitely be picking up a leather wallet Magsafe accessory, and the applications for accessory makers here is exciting. The idea that you had accessories with adhesive (popsockets come to mind, car phone holders, etc.) on the back of a glass phone was sketchy as could be, this seems so smart and creative, I'm excited for the accessories we'll start to see that take advantage of that.

I’ll upgrade to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. 5G at last!

The 12 actually looks tempting to me.

i'm considering it. if i trade in my phone, i can get one at half-price. and since i've been a member with T-Mobile for over 5 years, i'll get an additional $200 off

do i need the upgrade though? hmm

This year the upgrade seems worth it to me, more so than last year anyway (unless the camera is important). I'm on an annual upgrade package anyway so my only thing to consider was whether to switch from iPhone but I can't be bothered to research/think of what that might entail right now.

what do you mean about the camera?

what do you mean about the camera?
Last year's model saw an improved camera and for one of my friends for eg, that made it well worth it. But otherwise it was a treading water year with the big changes like 5G saved for this year.

What's your current phone?

I’ve done the upgrade for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Should be arriving in the post any day now.
