The Soothing Chaos of Eric Andre

His violently gleeful fake-talk-show Adult Swim outpost The Eric Andre Show, costarring Hannibal Buress and set to unveil Season 5 later this year, is pure anarchy

The worse the news gets in general, the more important The Eric Andre Show becomes for me. Has anything in the news this year changed your approach to the new season? How does a chaotic show deal with so much real-world chaos?

I guess effortlessly. What show is better situated, better poised to handle chaos? But I finished filming the show pre-COVID and pre-Cop Apocalypse.

After months of COVID, there’s something weirdly nostalgic about watching your old “Eric on the Street” clips now, even if it’s the super-pissed guy who threw your microphone at a cop car. At this point, are you longing for even your worst or your scariest one-on-one encounters with people?

No, not really, because I finished filming Season 5 right before COVID hit, like top of February, right before quarantine started. I don’t even think I knew the word COVID when we were finishing filming. So I got it out of my system for this year, so it’s not like a ton of time has passed since I filmed my last street bit. It’s like a couple months, and I’m just finishing editing now. So I have satisfied my hunger. And I’ve got a ton of stuff coming out this year.

Can't post the yt link, but he did an interview with Desus & Mero and he teased a season 5 bit with the subway.

Watching the premiere right now...gotta say, Adam Rippon and especially Judy Greer handled that quite well. I think as the show has grown in popularity, more celebrities who appear are more willing to roll with the punches. Yeah, you had a lot of people early on who could roll with the craziness- especially people who were either in on the joke or who already knew Eric Andre, like Jimmy Kimmel or Krysten Ritter- but then you'd get a T.I. or Lauren Conrad who would just up and leave.

On an side-note, I guess they've done away with the celebrity impersonators?

Also, nice to see the return of the Sprite sponsorship skit.

I cannot believe they actually got Macaulay Culkin for three seconds.

I just watched the "Making of" special and I think this could be the most fascinating bit of the series I've watched. Not just for the amount of effort that goes into an episode that only lasts 12 or so minutes, but how much Eric Andre pushes himself. When we see the segment towards the end where he's in the hospital with a concussion, I thought 'Well, damn.'

It's all fun and games, and we laugh at it all, but this man literally puts himself and his body through so much. Still, he does it with such passion that I have to admire it. Though, I did like the snippet where some of the guests from this season, like Diane Guerrero, talked about how they didn't watch the show prior to coming on.

At this point, I have to wonder...why not? It'd save them some of the surprises, but as the special pointed out, only T.I. and Lauren Conrad have walked off, so the show has a good batting average at keeping guests around. I have to assume that some know what they're walking into, like Jimmy Kimmel or Judy Greer or Krysten Ritter (though that's not fair because she's worked with him before), to name a few.
