X-Men - Part 8

Props to Duggan & Percy for that amazing issue of Marauders. One of my favorite XoS issues so far. X-Men #14 on the other hand I can only describe as a total waste of an issue.

I'm bored with the last two chapters. I'm just ready for these sword fights to begin but they are dragging it out.

I haven't read X-Men in a while but for me the X-Men and Punisher always seemed like they should've had their own separate world apart from the MU. Similar to the Punisher Max series.
I wouldn't be opposed if one day Marvel Comics kicks them out and put them in their own universe while keeping the X-Men's comic history.

As much as I love Apocalypse and Genesis, the gimmick of the issue felt lazy.

This crossover has had some major pacing issues. This will go down as one of the stories that started off very strong and went downhill even faster. XOS is a dud for me

Marauders had a couple of good moments, but I don't even know what to say or think about the other two issues. Too. Much. Trolling. At this point it feels like the crossover might really hurt sales going forward, rather than help them.

So Captain Britain suddenly lost and was shattered like a glass, because it was rigged by Saturyne? And Cypher and his opponent didn't even fight because Saturnye decided that those two should just marry each other. Whats even the point of the build up getting those swords if this is going to end up like this?

Yeah I can't wait for Jonathan Hickman to leave. This is too messy for my liking. A lot of his concepts are just not well eXecuted. He's pretty much just throwing all his ideas and nothing really makes sense to me.

I cringe at how bad this got bc that first issue was so amazing and set the stakes quite well. Even that X-Factor issue that followed. The Sword quest went on for too long and there doesnt seem to be payoff since many of the fights so far dont even require them. The story has now gone comedic antics when it should have been a serious threat. The tone doesnt match the setup

I mean, I'm fine with the fights not being traditional violence, and I do wonder what Saturnyne is up to.

I don't think the problem is that it's not traditional violence. It's that we had to buy eight issues worth of people collecting swords to end up where we are now. The way things are looking, the swords won't really be important outside of XoS: Destruction. That, on top of the bad pacing, just feels a bit disrespectful towards the readers imo.

It really is. Just read the last Chapter (the Wolverine one) and Krakoa is losing this? And the two points they got weren't results of an actual match - a marriage which gave each side a point and a drinking match between the tributes of Krakoa which was an automatic point for Krakoa. And oh... They didn't need their sword for those two points. This feels like a joke. I wasn't really into eXcalibur and the Saturyne storyline before this croXover, and ----[A]---- being a prominent presence in this Jonathan Hickman era so I'm just ready for this to be over. Magik and Captain Britain losing are such non events.

The issues this week were much better than the nonsense we got last week

Yeah, it was a step up at least. I will re-read the entire thing before diving into the final three chapters next week. I am a bit annoyed that King in Black is already around the corner though. Between that, XoS and Empyre, we hardly get time to develop any of the actual X-Men / DoX storylines.

I'm kinda bored with the whole thing. Maybe I've been reading comics for too long because this feels like it's been done before and too many times. Nothing seems fresh or new, and the dead X-men will be brought back so there's no real urgency for me. Just meh. More the fool me for getting suckered into buying issues of things I normally wouldn't for this middling mess. Hope things are better when this is done. :(

I mean, its a tournament arc, which we have been getting in anime forever, and is one of their most popular tropes. I do find that Saturnyne is actually the main villain more than Arrakko interesting. And I am loving the various Arrako characters we are meeting, and hope they stay around for a while.

Quick question did they ever fix Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch history and make them Magneto's children again? I still can't get over how they changed that just because they didn't have the movie rights to mutants.

Dawn of X is officially over and now its time for the Reign of X

No

That was a weird event. Really interested in the aftermath, with Arrakko reunited with Krakoa. With apparently millions of new mutants. That is going to be interesting effect on the world. Interesting potential with the X-men split from the government.

This was an awesome event! I loved every minute of it and I'm so excited for Reign of X, the natural continuation of DoX and the status quo HoX/PoX created! What do the people who said Marvel will quickly undo everything Hickman built have to say now?

I am kind of impressed with the lack of casualties, on both sides. Really, only two casualties, neither of whom I will miss too much.

I loved the Annihilation/Apocalypse design. I will miss Apocalypse. But, at least all 4 Horsemen are still around, in some form. I look forward to his return eventually. This has been the best he has been used since X-cutioner's Song. The status quo post Swords of X will be interesting, and it looks like some of the threads of HoX/PoX will be picked up again, with the Reign of X teaser. Arcade is a surprise, wonder where he will show up. Shadow King will be interesting. And Nimrod will continue the Hox/PoX premise, so that will be great. And then there is the Sinister rival from Amenth that we met in Hellions.

Looking forward to Sword. A book with Fabien Cortez, amazing.

It was an unbalanced event that was definitely drawn out too long. My re-read of everything after Statis did help a lot with my enjoyment of Destruction and at least I feel like they've stuck the landing. Fitting for a relaunch, the consequences are more interesting than I expected.
  • The deaths / 'resets' of Rockslide, Gorgon, Ward Child, Nanny, and Orphanmaker
  • Sinister's Betrayal
  • S.W.O.R.D. and Storm turning her eyes to the stars
  • The disappearance of Betsy and a huge canvas for Excalibur to play on
  • Losing two members of the Quiet Council
  • Status quo changes in Other World
  • Cypher's marriage and the reunification of Genesis and Apocalypse
  • The X-Men as a group being 'resurrected' in a way

Let's see what the future holds, shall we? For December we've got:
  • December 2: Hellions #7 and X-Factor #5
  • December 9: Marauders #16 and S.W.O.R.D. #1
  • December 16: New Mutants #14, Wolverine: Black, White, and Blood #2, and X-Force #16
  • December 23: Cable #7 and Excalibur #16
  • December 30: X-Men #16

Also for the obvious future predictions:
They are definitely going to send X-Force after the Cerebro Sword, so it can power the S.W.O.R.D. station. That way Cable can get his sword back. The expansion into space has been a long time coming, but the Reign of X indeed. Followed most likely by the Fall of X.

Here's hoping someone remembers where Morgan LeFay is....

I liked both Hellions and X-Factor this week. Glad we're done with the crossover and heading into Reign of X. There might have been an editorial mistake right at the start though.
Jean being on the council after how much of a deal was made about her being off the council. I guess she might stick around until choosing her replacement though. Loved the follow-up on the deaths and resurrections of XoS.
