Wonder Woman 1984 General Discussion and Speculation - Part 2

Besides China, Japan, and Australia, what other parts of the world are somewhat open? Is South Korea somewhat back to normal? Mexico & Brazil are huge for DC films, but I know Brazil is in bad shape. Can't help but think that they shot themselves in the foot by waiting until Dec to release this in theaters. Would have done better if they kept the Oct 2, 2020 date as countries like France, UK, and Germany were in better shape.

Very unfortunate that WW84 needs to be released this way.
I mean, the movie is like Black Widow, tell a story about the past (majority of it, at least). It wouldn't impact the future of the franchise much, so it could afford more delay. I get that they already promoted and hyped the movie for long now, can't prolong it any longer.
WB and AT&T in a very difficult situation now. The WB layoff has been utterly brutal, they even obliterated their promotion and marketing division.

I wish all the success it deserves. I can't watch it until later, sadly. No release near me and the Covid-19 considerably cut off my earnings. No streaming services for me (also not available in my country). The first DCU movie I missed on theatres.

What a terrible look. Both DC movies this year were female led and both will lose money smh

I hope they don't become the new 'Catwoman and 'Elektra'

Those two films were just flat out BAD. These arent/weren't. But it does suck that we had so many female movies that wont be able to get the financial success they deserve and likely would've gotten. I just pray that studios dont try to use this against female lead movies since they are always quick to come up with a reason.

BoP is already not even close to Catwoman or Elektra, so that's really not a risk.

Imagine watching it in poorly compressed 1080 on your laptop.
Of a poor pirated cam copy because it seems that is all us Canadians are getting:
Want to watch Wonder Woman 1984 in Canada next month? Good luck

WB's gamble just got dumber in that they releasing it in Canada on Christmas Day in theatres, but not providing any streaming alternative. Bell Media's Crave, which has picked up the rights to most HBO and Max content here, has now announced that they have secured the streaming right for WW84 AFTER its regular theatre release...

Given that theatres are closing in more and more metropolitan areas, this means that the theatre release will be basically non-existent and Canadians will basically be forced to pirate the film if they want to watch in during the next 3 months. Meaning that not only will they lose an entire country's theatre revenue, but also what alternative streaming revenue they could get instead. Great ****ing job, WB and Bell!

I don't see that happening but it's a shame Patty Jenkins doesn't get to really prove she belongs in the big leagues with a big BO number. Especially when you consider that after directing Monster she didn't get a movie for another 14 years. That's insane. A male director would get so many opportunities after directing a film that was nominated for and won Oscars..

I think ATT is fully aware that this film is going to be pirated to hell. All they seem to care about at this point is that people are talking about HBO Max and that it is in the news. That's nice and all, but it's bad optics to purposely allow your only major female led and directed superhero movie to bomb and be the sacrificial lamb for the sake of a failed streaming service that still doesn't offer 4K, Dolby Atmos and isn't available to all markets. It's a big F U to all WW fans overseas for the sake of a few headlines about your streaming service.

Didnt WW make majority of her money in the US though? Sure, itll be a nice add to the box office and I hope its a huge hit in those two markets but they didnt add much to the first one if my memory remembers correctly.

WW’s gross was roughly 51/49 split between domestic and international.

The mistake that AT&T and WB made was not releasing Wonder Woman in December of 2019. It would have made a billion and undercut that horrible Star Wars movie.

WW84 would’ve absolutely dominated last November had WB stuck with that (but no they wanted Joker to get all that money). Frozen II and Knives Out did very well but WW84 would’ve helped make it one of the biggest grossing months.

It would’ve definitely undercut Rise of Skywalker and Jumanji 3 too but those had demographic crossover. It’s best for a big title to have a weekend to itself and reap all the benefits.

I can't see Wonder Woman 1984 making big money in China.

We'll see, but current projections have it opening at over $70M.

You know, given how badly RoS cratered, relatively speaking, I wonder if Wonder Woman 1984 would have not just undercut it, but actually outgrossed it?

This is literally the best looking, visually, upcoming release from WB. Hell, even Dune would be a lesser tragedy if it went to streaming

That's never going to happen as Dune is a Legendary Entertainment film. WB is the distributor, but Legendary covered most of the production budget. It's also why Godzilla vs Kong was moved to 2021. WarnerMedia would have to buy these movies for HBO Max.

Assuming WW84’s a great movie that wouldve been a very real possibility. And that wouldve been huge bragging rights for DC/WB. Outgrossing a Star Wars film.

It's a shame this won't gross anywhere as near as the first WW film. They need to send it back in time to 2019. Sometimes waiting for what they thought would be the perfect conditions in 2020 doesn't work out like in this case.

I think there was plenty of room for WW84 in Christmas 2019. Heck, 2009 was dominated by Avatar but Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 did great business too.
