Black Widow News and Speculation Thread

Disney has NEVER debuted an MCU film on DisneyPlus.
My guess is that if things continue to go badly, Disney will delay it again, maybe to late July or early August. If they move BW to Disney Plus, I will watch it.
However, I appreciate that Disney is doing their best to debut it theatrically.

Well, yes, because the service hasn't even been long enough for there to be an MCU film to be dropped on it, like Slayer said. The platform didn't debut until November of last year, so there wouldn't have been an MCU film to debut at that point to begin with, compared to something like Onward, which could go right to Disney+ this year after being in the theaters for a minute.

If BW does go to theaters, then how long before it will go to D+? I know they have to keep the 90 day theatrical window but then after that it still has to go to VOD and wait another few months before hitting D+? When movies premiere on HBO, it’s usually been like 9-10 months since it came out in theaters. I guess we have to wait the 9-10 month period if we want to watch it on D+ and not spend any extra money on it?

Unless there's some preexisting VOD deal restricting it, I can see BW being offered on Premier Access at the same time as regular digital VOD.

If Premier Access for BW remains at the same $30 price that they charged for Mulan, it might be cheaper to go the digital access route, but as a rental. Just wait 3 months and it will become a regular part of Disney Plus at no extra cost.

I'm guessing for a title that's already released, Premier Access would be cheaper. Charging $30 for early D+ access doesn't make sense if other platforms offer a standalone copies for the same price.

After the theatrical window (whatever that turns out to be), upon the digital release, I think they should simultaneously charge about $30 for a VOD purchase from other services, $20 for a 48-hour rental, and something like $12 for Premiere Access on D+. Then put it on blu-ray a few weeks later and make it free on D+ after 3 months. That would make that subscription look like the more appealing option, imo, and the added Premiere Access cost seem not ridiculous and kinda worth it for those who don't want to wait a few months to be able to watch it as much as they want on D+.

If they want "Premiere Access" to become a thing (and I'm not sure it should, but if they do), it needs to actually FEEL like a "Premiere" perk for subscribers compared to what they would otherwise pay elsewhere, imo.

I hope that you are right about that.

I’m not sure if it’s good to have a theatrical run. The movie and the brand will have to endure bad press akin to WW right now even though the press knows this is to be expected. But I guess the press also needs clickbait headlines. Perhaps just running it on D+ is a better idea to avoid that, especially by mid 2021 most major international markets sans China should have D+.

Please let theaters survive until May *prays* I really missed going to an MCU film this year
I went to every Thursday Preview night since Avengers 1. All were so memorable and full of energy, I don't want to watch this just at home but if I have to I guess I have to. Even if they release in theaters I live in CA so doubt they open where I am.

Release on VOD for $20. Release on D+ for $30 but that includes access to D+ for 2 months so you’re saving $10.

A main objective of releasing Black Widow on D+ would be to boost subscribers, so I HIGHLY doubt VOD through traditional marketplaces would be an option. The number of countries without D+ and with closed theatres would be insignificant to global sales.

Unless Bond moves early, I doubt we're hearing any news about Widow's release until March.

I'm not paying $30 to watch something on Disney+ that will be released for $0 on Disney+ three months later. It's not happening.

This release is likely to be delayed again.

and people were telling me I was being dramatic when I said 2021 theatrical releases would be a wash again.

This isn't a good barometer, but I have to chuckle at the occasional folks on Twitter who think that, even with a vaccine, things will be back to normal by next spring. Many probably things would be fine now. Even by next spring, assuming a vaccine is even readily available and accessible to the general public, people will be hesitant. Families will be hesitant to take their kids to a crowded area, not just theaters, for risk of them getting sick.

The vaccine doesn't automatically mean we return to the days of billion dollar movies. At least, not immediately, and certainly not with anything set to come out next year.

2021 is going to be another wash and a ****show.

We aren't getting back to "normal" this year, even with the vaccines, which are not a cure. The only thing that will get us back to normal is bringing the COVID-19 numbers way down and taking the stress off the hospitals.

So what is the play here? Do you delay the theatrical releases again, do you wait until the pandemic is well and truly over? Or do you do something else?

You are correct.

The question Marvel Studios will have to eventually answer is whether they'd prefer the entirety of Phase 4's rollout so far to be via an exclusive streaming service, instead of that as well as films. They can either push their films back again, or Disney can bite the bullet and put them on Disney+ as well as in theaters.

Because sure, people will still be interested in the films they want to see, regardless of delays, but the initial hype and enthusiasm will just not be there.

You must be so proud of you now...

Hopefully they will move to November. I'm trying to be optimistic, thinking that vaccines for Covid could be a regular thing and millions of people have been vaccinated/cases are lower (my country is supposed to start getting it neXt month) and theaters here have been closed since March 2020.

I know the old foX has a deal with WB, thats why new FoX films aren't being banished to Hulu/D+, but the recent delats for foX films gave me some hope that the neXt 3 MCU flicks will be delayed and not get the same treatment as WW84/Raya.

Even people who are vaccinated might still have COVID and could still be contagious.

I'm sure thats possible but like I said by fall, more people are already vaccinated which could lead to lower cases which is the goal of these vaccines. Right now in Israel, 30% of their population have been vaccinated. In the Uk, it almost 10%, in UAE its 26% and in the U.S., its more than 6%.

The number will increase in the neXt several months. Unless something terribly goes wrong with these vaccines, then things won't change.

13min being possibly just the credits (after the credits ) if it’s released on Disney+
