House of the Dragon House of the Dragon General Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS)

These castings and the character descriptions make it all-but-official this is going to be like The Crown, with some major time-jumps and multiple seasons before we even get to the Dance. Which means we should get to see the War in the Stepstones, and I am VERY excited for that.

However, it's rumored in the same report that Corlys Velaryon will be Black, which throws a wrench into the central narrative that is the debate over Rhaenyra's children and who their father is.

The Crown but about the Targs is exactly what I want.

With Smith’s casting and this talk about The Crown, it’s funny to think that all three Prince Philips will have been on an ASOIAF series.

Sound of Metal's Olivia Cooke Talks 'Game of Thrones' Prequel Audition - Variety
Olivia Cooke admits she didn’t know much about “Game of Thrones” when she first auditioned for its spinoff prequel, “House of the Dragon.” “When I read the script, I hadn’t seen any ‘Game of Thrones,’” the British actor, 27, tells me from her London home. “But then I binged it and now I’m obsessed.” It was announced in early December that Cooke landed the role of Alicent Hightower, the daughter of Hand of the King Otto Hightower. “I had to do so many self-tapes,” Cooke says. “I was on hold for ages.” She was offered the job in October but had to keep mum for two months. “People would ask, ‘What’s up for you next?’ and I’d have to be like, ‘Nothing.’”

She insists she doesn’t know what her wardrobe and hair and makeup will be like. “I’ve had one sort of preliminary fitting when they just draped some fabric on me but that was it,” Cooke says. She has, however, read some scripts – but she is, no surprise, sworn and signed to secrecy.

‘House Of the Dragon’: Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best & Sonoya Mizuno Join HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel – Deadline

Toussaint’s Lord of House Velaryon comes from a Valyrian bloodline as old as House Targaryen. As “The Sea Snake,” the most famed nautical adventurer in the history of Westeros, Lord Corlys built his house into a powerful seat that is even richer than the Lannisters and that claims the largest navy in the world. Danny Sapani was previously in talks for the role.

Ifans will play Otto Hightower. The Hand of the King, Ser Otto loyally and faithfully serves both his king and his realm. As the Hand sees it, the greatest threat to the realm is the king’s brother, Daemon, and his position as heir to the throne.

Best is cast as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon. A dragonrider and wife to Lord Corlys Velaryon, “The Queen Who Never Was” was passed over as heir to the throne at the Great Council because the realm favored her cousin, Viserys, simply for being male.

Mizuno plays Mysaria, who came to Westeros with nothing and has been sold more times than she can recall. She could have wilted… but instead she rose to become the most trusted — and most unlikely — ally of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir to the throne.

Rhys Ifans has such a vibe about him that I actually had to stop and think “Oh right, he was never on Game of Thrones.”

Just a perfect fit for that world.

The Verlaryon casting is odd, because the question of his grandchildren’s true parentage is big plot point and motivating factor in the war.

I wanted Timothy Dalton as Otto SO bad, but I am super excited to see what Rhys does with the part.

Yeah, it's not a stretch given the Velaryon's sea-faring nature for Corlys to be Black, but they'll have to figure something out to make the paternity debate work. It could be as simple as casting Black actors as House Strong as well. They were essentially lucky landed knights who got upjumped to lords of the largest (and most cursed) castle in Westeros and were distrusted and underestimated by most of the other nobility, so that could fit well with their story.

In which case...

Rege-Jean Page as Ser Harwyn 'Breakbones' Strong?

And maybe a big name like Idris Elba or Chiwetel Ejiofer to guest star as Lord Lyonel Strong? Or Lennie James if they want someone cheaper.

I suppose now that I think about it, the books do make it pretty obvious that Velaryon wasn’t the father of those kids. He was gay and the kids didn’t share his colouring at all.

So maybe they’ll just go with the kids looking Westerosi, and it’ll be a glaring open secret that Rhaenrya strayed.

Yep. It's a clear change but one where I can already see where they're going with it.

Hope we’ll explore Ashai by the Dark and Stygai in this series. It’s were the dragons come from

Am I guessing right, that the series won‘t be set in ancient Valyria but in Westeros (which we already know)?

Yes. There have been rumors of an Ancient Valyria series in very early evelopment, but this show will primarily take place in Westeros. Judging from recent reports, we'll be getting a good amount of action in the Stepstones for the first season or two, though.

Bummer. I always wanted to see Valyria. Looked cool, when Tyrion and Jorah paddled by

The Doom of Valyria happened 700 years before the events of this show. And the events of this show begin 284 years before GOT.

This is the most socially distant Starship Enterprise that I've ever seen:
