Black Widow News and Speculation Thread

Keep straddling that fence, Disney. Of course, if it does come out in May as intended, like any other movie that gets a theatrical release, it won't exactly make much.

But we'll see what happens between now and May.

What do you suggest them to do? Release Free Guy straight in D+ as well?

They already released a bunch of films in D+ that were supposed to come out in theaters. Mulan, Soul, that Kenneth Branagh spy film, Hamilton, etc.

If they release these movies on Disney+ now, they are almost assuredly never getting any of that money back.

Disney has enough content to go through Disney+ for now. Save all the big live-action theatrical releases for later.

I'm not paying $30 for premiere access, especially for a movie that will be available on Disney+ for free three months later. It's f'n ridiculous.

Doing both. Give it to cinemas and D+ for around 15-20 USD. I dont see the cinemas being opened again here until May since we are since 8 weeks in a strong lockdown.

Again, that didn't work so well for Mulan. While I just read that WW84 was only available in HBO Max for a month.

You are only going to remove the box office potential of the film if you release it straight through a streaming site the same day as it hits theaters. People who aren't willing to pay a premium price might just wait for the filmto come out for rent for a lower price in less than 6months, or just wait til its streaming for free. While the movie will certainly pop up in pirate sites especially with its digital copy accessible online.

Again, this only benefits the people whoare impatient to see thefilm and they aren't going to lose money anyway. However business wise, Disney isn't going to be satisfied with the money with that strategy. Because if Mulan was a D+ success to them, meaning the premium price strategy worked for them, more films would have been in D+ and more films would have already been released that way. But its almost a year since they Mulan dumped in D+ and they are stillcommiting for a theaterical release for Black Widow.

And I already said the movie is likely to be moved given how silent the marketing is. No Time to Die already moved to October, that film was supposed to come out in April 2020. Black Widow ain't coming out in May.

By the way, I just found out yesterday that theaters here are finally open from where I live. So I might get to watch the film in a theater if it is released in May and if theaters are still opened in that month.

May just drop this in theaters in China where there is no and will never be access to D+ and on D+ everywhere else with a fee for a few months the then free. China just clocked the biggest box office day ever, dwarfing also Endgame. A lot of money for Disney to pick up there.

If Feige insists on a theatrical run everywhere then I’m afraid by the time that happens, all the actors will have forgotten they were even in the film at all, and the audience will be like Black Widow who? There may not be any cinema chains left as well.

Because dropping it in China won't lead to pirated copies popping online?

That sounds quite dramatic that there won't be any cinema chains left... imo the worst part of the pandemic is already over. We already have the vaccines being distributed and its just a matter of time when people are ready to go back to theaters and when every city allows theaters to be open. It might not happen this year, but theater chains aren't going to be eXtinct.

And people won't forget who Black Widow is.... that is absurd comment to make especially the character just appeared in a 2019 film which is the highest grossing film of all time.

If NYC is opening up, then this should be on track to be out in May. It definitely won’t make the amount of money it would have pre-pandemic but I don’t see them delaying it again or sending it to D+ first.

Assuming folks in New York would even venture to theaters, since there's been a case of that South African variant now reported in New York. But like everything else regarding movies and theater closures and re-openings, I'm sure everyone's playing it by ear.

They still need California imo and they still need the rest of the world. Also I don't see the harm of delaying this to Q4 of 2021. No Time to Die already moved to October and D+ is crashing due to the high demand of WandaVision. Disney have 4 upcoming streaming Mcu series for the rest of 2021. They don't need this to be out in May especially they aren't even advertising this movie for months now. Thats a possible indication that they aren't confident with a summer release.

And delaying this yet again won't hurt the MCU 2022 movies either especially some of mcu 2022 films have yet to film anything. And things are still being slowed down by the pandemic especially with movie productions. Spider-Man 3 would likely move to 2022. Who knows when Dr. Strange 2 will finally start filming. Thor 4 would have tons of vfX work and I doubt visual effect companies aren't being slowed down by the pandemic.

That's a pretty big leap since that's still only two months out and just 25 percent capacity and just for New York so far. Plus, will people even be willing to into theaters in droves even at 25 percent capacity/

We are more or less 10 weeks away from May 7. And still no new marketing whatsoever. Surely, Disney would have uploaded something by now in their YT account and other social media accounts if it is coming out very soon.

It's basically coming to the point where they have to say something, whether they are delaying it or keeping the date. We should probably know soon in the next week or two.

The movie would still take a huge hit without Los Angeles.

I see two choices, August or December.
Safest bet is December.
My gut says they settle for August, if they move at all.

November or December or even early 2022.

They are probably moving it in April or late March to a new date.

Marvel Studios didn't delay this long just to settle with 25% occupancy in NY theaters.

The problem is they can't wait much longer to announce they are delaying it, they have to give the theatres a heads up about it. They cant wait till the last minute.

They could though especially we are in the middle of the pandemic. Theaters are just not in demand right now. Studios imo don't really need to give them an early heads up, when people are barely going to theaters in the last 12 months. Its not even clear if F9 is being still released in May as well.

But I do think they should have already announced another delay the moment No Time to Die moved to October.
