God of War God of War: Ragnarök

I'm still kinda shocked that this game is already coming out. Makes me believe they'll reuse a lot of what was present in the first game, like the main hub world, just locking some of the previous realms and unlocking the other ones that we haven't visited yet.

I hope Asgard is even bigger than Midgard and has plenty of stuff to see and do for most of the game.
I really doubt this would be released neXt year given the lack of footage, unless Sony is saving that later this year.

It was announced to obviously entice people to buy ps5 this early.

Probably my most anticipated game at this point. So much so I won't be getting a PS5 until this comes out.

Well it has not been confirmed to be delayed yet but no one is like expecting it to be out this year including me even when it was first announced just seems to soon. Before the year started I figured ratchet and clank rift apart and Horizon FW would both be 2021 and that GT 7 and God of war would both be pushed to 2022 and I am still thinking that. If we got all 4 of those games it would be crazy and GT 7 already did get offically delayed and with covid its hard to say. Ratchet and clank is already 2 months after it was supposed to be. Kena got delayed 2 times already and like 9 months of delays. Horizon came out about a year before GOW and we have had a full trailer but not a gameplay video yet and GOW only has had a teaser and like a real teaser has it didnt show like anything but a logo. So GOT 7 and GOW for 2022 sounds good and I also think we will get a trailer at least a teaser at some point this year for spiderman 2 and that it will be a late 2022/early 2023 game.

At this point, its a writing on the wall. Returnal was delayed for a month. Destruction AllStars was delayed for about 3 months. Kena/Ratchet were supposed to be launch titles and they said Kena was targeting a q1 but now a late q3 release. Horizon still has no release date, not even new footage since it was announced. Final Fantasy 16 doesn't have a date either. And if I remember correctly the only game announced in the previous State of Play presentations that was targeting a 2022 release is Pragmata - which is now delayed to 2023. While Hogwarts, Gran Turismo 7 and Project Athia are now targeting a 2022 release.

Now how can something a game like God of War with zero gameplay footage, zero concept art, not even a teaser of what Kratos will look like in the game will be out in less than 10 months and not be delayed when a lot of Sony and triple A game have been delayed in the last 2 months. This ain't Call of Duty.

I am happy to wait, they should take their time and get it right as topping the previous game will be damn hard.

Especially after what happened to Cyberpunk, Anthem and I guess Avengers as well.

I think studios are more conscious now about not launching a buggy game.

I think that's for the best, back when I was well into my gaming in the late 90's, games came out complete then with rarely any bugs, etc, and DLC wasn't even a thing.

When I got back into gaming again nearly 20 years later in 2017, I couldn't believe how some games were released and DLC just seems crazy to me. GoW was thankfully an exception to all of that, so I hope the sequel is the same.

They should definitely take whatever time they need to make it worthy of the previous game.

Personally I'd also like to see them steer into a more nuanced view of the Aesir since the Norse gods were flawed but definitely weren't as terrible as the Greek ones, and they did make the game more mature and nuanced through Kratos with the last game. It felt way too simplistic to make the Aesir just evil and make the Giants nice. It's probably way too late to still hope that they introduce nuance at this point though.

One thing to factor into this is that before high-speed internet was available to consumers in mid-2000s, game developers had to release near-perfect products (i.e. no game-breaking bugs). On PC it was more feasible to do updates but how many consoles had a built-in phone line socket back then?

When a game goes gold, the final build is sent to manufacturers to burn on discs. A game-breaking bug was found after retail launch? Well too ****ing late... The publisher would have had printed the discs again with the fixed build and customers would have gotten an exchange at the store. Today? Easy peasy, we have the internetz!!!

As a developer myself, I obviously don't condone buggy software but I can see why game studios have been releasing Day-1 patches for over a decade now thanks to the conveniance of the internet (we live in a digital era after all).

And as for DLC, I don't like them but that's another discussion for another day. :yay:

I don’t even see it as a delay, more like an intentional bare faced lie that there was any chance of it coming out at that time. :D

Maybe but Horizon FW is also a system seller level game and so will be spiderman 2 so.

Yeah but they were using it to entice people to buy the ps5 asap, when they literally have no footage to show for the game eXcept for a logo and announced a 2021 release. What they shown is actually fine if only they didn't add 2021 in that teaser.

Now, they changed their tune to "we'll release it when its ready...". So are we supposed to ignore that 2021 announcement now or assume that it will be ready in Q4? Its not clear and they are misleading people imo.

Also Iirc, God of War 2018's footage was first released in 2016, two years before its launch. So I was skeptical the moment I saw the 2021 date without any actual footage from the game. By the end of the year, I'd be saying I told you so.

Well I was very skeptical on 2021 for god of war on day 1 because of like what you said about just getting a logo and nothing else and also Horizon came out about a year before the last GOW so its had more time to be worked on and so makes more sense that it would come out sooner than GOW and also it was said Ratchet and clank, GT 7, GOW and Horizon FW where all supposed to be 2021 games and I thought it was unlikely to get all 4 of those in the same year has Sony tends to space out exclusives a little bit and delays happen a lot in video games any way. Than you add in covid even more so. I mean Ratchet and clank is coming out about 2 months after launch window when it was supposed to be launch window and now some people are wondering if it might be pushed out a little bit longer has that is only 1 day after FF. Kena went from launch day to Q1 2021 to now August 24 2021 so 2 delayed and like 9 months. GT 7 already got pushed to 2022 and the Harry Potter game already got pushed to 2022. A lot of games have gotten delayed already this year and we are only about 2 months into the year. I am just hoping and praying that Horizon FW comes out this year still has the first game is my favorite ps4 excuse and if it dosnt come out this year than 2021 might be light on ps5 games. Before the year 2021 was looking to be massive but with covid and delays 2022 might be more like how 2021 was supposed to be.

Yeah Horizon is my most anticipated 2021 game and I think I might buy it during launch week.

Man they need to get that fight with Thor spot on. Though the Baldur fights were pretty damn amazing, Thor is another level to him.

Definitely agreed on the writing of the giants. Like how the giant that built Asgard's walls just wanted to have a short audience with Freya, while the actual myth has him demanding not only Freya's hand in marriage but also to have the sun and the moon for himself. The giants being these nice, peaceful people that were tormented by the homicidal madman Thor, when some of them were very dangerous and Thor was pretty good-natured and the protector of mankind in the myths.

It's a good game in itself but its version of Norse mythology is quite terrible and overly simplistic.

In a game called God of War where God's are supposed to be the villains, they had to find some way to make the Asgardians into not nice people, so we can have fun beating the crap out of them with Kratos.

I cant wait to see a villainous Thor and Odin personally, especially after years of seeing them depicted as heroes in various media.

Personally I don't have any issues with them being the villains, it's obvious that it will be the case in a God of War game. My issue is how two-dimensional they made it, instead of bringing the new nuanced take on Kratos to the entire story.

You don't need to make the Aesir into simple monsters to have them working as antagonists and the game developers already showed that they are fully capable of making a nuanced character into a (future) villain with Freya. The latter is just a much more interesting thing to tell a story around. On the flip side I think it's pretty boring to make the giants into peace-loving saints as well, and to kill them off for that matter. It all was too black and white for my taste, even though I enjoyed the game overall.

I learned long ago in the 360/PS3 generation days to never expect a game to hold its release date until it goes gold. I'd rather them take their time to perfect it. It also gives me more time to secure a PS5. :o

I'm excited to see evil Thor, but evil Odin could be a downright monster, especially since he's already been portrayed as shady and dark as hell in projects like the MCU Thor movies.

I wouldn't mind seeing another side to Thor rather than some psychopath. Considering the kid is meant to be Loki and Kratos is prophesied to die, I wouldn't mind playing as both Thor and Loki and at least have some sort of aherance to Loki being Thor's adopted brother in these games.

Loki isn't an adopted brother of Thor in Norse mythology. He is however a sworn blood brother to Odin.
