Max: The Artist Formerly Known as HBO Max

I've been binging Justice League. I watched this so long ago, I don't even remember if I saw all these episodes. But wow, what a show. There wasn't one weak arc in that first season. The DCAU for those fifteen years was just God-tier. These all could have been movies! I have a hard time picking my favorite but possibly Savage World. It's just so damn cinematic. War World could have made a great Superman movie! Why the bad place don't they let Dini and Timm and Berkowitz run the DCU?

I'm gonna go from this to JLU which I missed a lot on as a kid when it was on.

As a Batman fan, I love it too. Although I will say... I wish Superman didn't get hurt so damn much. You could make a montage of the amount of times Superman goes, "ARRGHHHH!" and falls mid-flight. :funny:

I've also been digging back into the old animated DC shows and have been loving it. Looking forward to STAS, as that is the one I haven't seen in the longest time compared to BTAS and JL.

Static Shock does not really hold up for me at this stage.

Heh, a little surprised at how many people here on SHH don't have the DCAU on DVD. I have BTAS, STAS, JL, JLU, and Batman Beyond all on DVD so I don't need HBO Max for those. :o

I got my season copies of JL signed by the voice cast at Denver Comic Con when they were all here a few years ago.

A bunch of DC films will be leaving pretty soon. Shazam, Superman: Unbound (or one of the Super animated films), I believe TDK, Green Lantern.

Who the bad place wants Green Lantern as an exclusive that HBOM is getting rid of it...no idea.

Oh I do, but half are not HD remasters. Plus I don't like to have to constantly find my DVD's and change discs (and DVD's get scratched). Streaming is just far more convenient, imo.

That's awesome!

Yeah, Im just lazy to use my dvds. Though I should since Im constantly in danger of going over my monthly internet allotment.

They really should re-release JL(U) on blu-ray.

I got most of the DCAU upgraded to bluray and they are extremely well done.

I can’t remember the last time I have actually watched a DVD or Blu-ray. I just stream now.

Pre-existing contracts. They were able to borrow them for a bit, essentially leasing them from who ever have the rights currently. Sort of how Netflix was able to get the Karate Kid films for a little while.

Until something you love isn't available.

I get it for first time viewing. But if there's something you are truly going to watch more than twice, buy the physical media because you never know when it might disappear or be altered in the future or financially you can't keep paying month to month for something.

I don’t think there’s anything where I felt the need to watch it over and over at a moment’s notice. If it comes on tv, then great. Otherwise, I can wait.

HBO Max should be working towards having every single DC thing ever created under that one single platform. Disney Plus seems to be the only one's doing it right.

Disney Plus still has a ways to go on that front. They're still missing 3 MCU movies that are owned by other studios and they still have to figure out how to incorporate R-rated movies that they actually own the rights to, such as Deadpool and Logan. I'd love it if they could reach some sort of deal with Sony so that they could get the Raimi Spider-Man films on there too.

But going back to HBO Max and DC, there's nothing stopping them from putting out every DC property they own on there. I think the only major DC property that WB doesn't own the rights to is the '60s Batman series, which is still owned by Fox, funny enough. I can't really see WB shelling out big bucks to put the series on HBO Max unless there's some huge demand. The 1966 movie is also owned by Fox but that can easily be shown on HBO Max at some point since they've had other Fox movies like Alien and Die Hard on the service.

Its a waiting game, really. I mean, lets not forget how many holes Disney+ had at launch. And still does internationally.

They just need to be like CBS/Paramount. They have a clause that allows them to air their properties on their services and sell them to other streaming services like Netflix.

In a recent interview Chapek did say that 50% of their subscribers don’t have children so they know there’s definitely a market for more mature content. I think they’re trying to figure out something with Hulu for that.

I think I remember reading that they were working on something too. They won't really have to worry about it until Marvel Studios starts putting out R-rated content like Deadpool 3.

I love all these Harvard Business School graduates without any film knowledge telling us what people want! That's who's running the studios these days.

I’m okay with it. Better than a film snob telling a regular Joe how he should watch movies. $15 is pretty expensive for a streaming service. I would downgrade to an ad supported tier of given the chance.

HBO started off as a much different place. I feel because it was a cable service first and how it's subsequent Now & Go services were pretty much at $15, they weren't going to offer Max for less despite having some 20% off intial programs.
