Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

I have never felt quite the way I did leaving the theater after seeing it the first time. I was honestly kind of paranoid to hell which makes zero sense but is not hyperbolic at all. I was so into the film, it was so raw and in my face that my fight or flight was triggered for a while. My dad felt similar when I took him to see it. (he jumped 2 feet in the air when Murray meets his demise)

I think the last time I was engaged on that type of level was There Will Be Blood where at the end I thought DDL was going to reach through the screen and kill me just cause he didn't like me watching him. Before that...probably being 17 seeing Heat in the theaters with my buddies at a late showing.

What is funny to me is that not only Film Twitter got mad Tarantino liked the movie, but they also admit they didn't even watch the movie but just dislike it because others told them to hate it.

It's very well known at this point that Film Twitter despises Joker and that it's done well despite how all the fearmongering and attacks against it didn't work. That was some delicious karma.

Yes, "think for yourself" doesn't really happen online sometimes.

I watched this again, and I think it’s the best CBM ever. Not surprising how divisive it is though.

I have a fair number of criticisms of Joker but Christ on a cracker Film Twitter really invented a movie in their minds and projected all their hates and fears onto
I used to be on film Twitter, but honestly, the pretentious elitism of that place is just disgusting. They love to insult anyone that likes something they don't, and most of the times seem to be very pretentious young people trying to sound special. As you can see, even here, with the news of Tarantino enjoying the movie, they started to insult him and anyone who liked it. Only because Tarantino enjoyed Joker and they didn't

THR confirmed sequel plans today! I’m hyped. The first is the best comic book movie ever. I thought Nicholson and Ledger gave 10/10 performances as well, but Joaquin did the impossible and has become my favorite Joker.

Hmmm, now I'm only wondering if it will be a proper sequel or an entirely different Joker origin story with Phoenix.

I'm still conflicted on this news. For one, we knew even before Joker that Phoenix wasn't one for films that would lead to sequels or franchises- hence why he didn't play Doctor Strange. From what I remember, anyway. But more than that, Joker just feels fine as is. Trying to recapture what made the first one so good and impactful would be like trying to catch lightning in a bottle.

It's not impossible, and I feel like Phillips and Phoenix could do something special again, but I don't feel it's necessary. I'll say it again- if DC instead wanted to instead do more Black Label-esque films with other Batman villains, that'd be great. But where do you even go with a Joker sequel? I'll see the film anyway, if it does happen, but my hope is it doesn't take away from what made the first one so great.

If Phoenix truly signs on, then I'm interested. At the very least, it won't be generic. He wouldn't waste his time.

I remember I watched him say on an interview he showed Phillips edits of other movies with the Joker there, and told him if he had ideas for a sequel. Seems like Phoenix loved the character of Fleck/Joker.

The question is... who does the sequel introduce? It’s gotta have either Batman or Harley IMO

Potentially disastrous news. Or great. Idunno...

So no Reevesverse Joker then ?? ...

I’d rather see another DC villain get the “realistic” treatment versus Phoenix coming back for a sequel. Joker ended perfectly, I don’t want to see what he does next, but I’m not against the idea of another potential “origin” with Phoenix giving a completely new take on the character.

With that said, if Joker was influenced by Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, I’d love to see a sequel influenced by Cape Fear and Goodfellas.

What if the movie starts off with Pheonix in a cell, watching a tv, or a tv is on, in the background, king of comedy/taxi driver is on or ending, like we see the end credits, so it's like an Easter egg and if you know, you know... and the first movie we saw, joker... the events were all in his head... or a fabrication to a therapist... like it's picked up upon that he tells a tale, so its a clean slate for them to go in any direction and they can keep what worked in particular.

I would like it to be present day and we see that he does lie, so that he tells certain stories, events again and we see different actors, like we see scenes reshot, but from a different perspective then we see Jim Gordon walk in and it's Jeffry Wright. That be cool.

However, I'm intrigued by the sequel, simply because it's unlike Pheonix to attack himself to this kind of thing.

If Phoenix is that enthused about doing more I kinda have to take his word for it actually being something impressive.

JOKER is one of my favourite movies of all time. If Phoenix signs up, I'm inclined to believe the script is worthy. He doesn't seem to be a man who would commit to just anything. As for a story, I like the idea of setting it inside the asylum. Meetings with doctors and the like, with one of them being Harleen Quinzel. Hallucination sequences could again make the viewer question what is real and what isn't. For example, if an escape attempt was really successful.

I wonder what territory and themes this will explore.

If it were me I’d use it to explore gun control and school shooters, and how kids are perhaps inspired by other mass shootings.

Maybe set it in more modern times (with Phoenix in old man makeup), exploring the effect of social media on youth, how kids have access to view graphic material from a young age, etc.

Maybe have something happen at Bruce’s school, if not by Bruce himself.
