Let’s talk non-Batsuit costumes...

Much love to the costume designers. It’s all old baggy suits and wrinkles. I mentioned in the Catwoman thread about how her look at the funeral is borderline camp. The commissioners serial killer glasses. It immediately separates it from Nolan.

It's that 80s aesthetic, man. It is perfect for Gotham/Batman. Old timey and grimey in some ways, but also theatrical and over the top as well.

I also love the fact that Durran, being a British costume designer who has worked on numerous period pieces and is therefore very knowledgeable about the classic rules of menswear, seems to be following everything I said two posts up about how Bruce should not wear black in daylight, but instead dark greys and blues in accordance with the fashion rules of the old money, upper class. I'm so pleasantly surprised to see that Bruce is not wearing black at the funeral scene but instead various shades of dark charcoal grey and possibly some charcoal navy. A funeral is traditionally the only time when it is appropriate for a pale white guy to dress in a black suit in daylight and instead Durran dresses him in dark grey, which gives the effect of black, but is more flattering.

I do wonder what other type of suits and outfits Bruce will be wearing, I find him hard to imagine with anything other than the one we saw in the set pics

Given the clear direction of a young Bruce dressed in the style of the early 1990s, I can foresee things like this:

So basically, stuff like this:

I was thinking Bruce could take a page from JFK Jr.

Kennedy isn't always dressed up when he's out in public. But his choice of clothing typically had some thought or care put in. There's a carefree style to Kennedy's outfits, but it's informed by his upbringing. Preppy, and romantic. The sport coat over the t-shirt, for example. Even his most casual outfits are probably not cheap.

Bruce is just as privileged. He'd be going to boarding schools, travelling, surrounded by wealth. He'd spend his early days wearing a school uniform, or wearing the nicest clothes. Even if Bruce rejects flagrant displays of wealth, this sense of style would be ingrained in him at a young age, either by his parents, or by Alfred.

But his style also depends on where his character is in life. Is Bruce just a trust fund baby, or is he actively involved in his business? Another style inspiration I think of is Roman Roy from Succession.

Despite not being very actively involved in the family business, Roman is almost never not dressed up in some way. And like Bruce and Kennedy, it's likely due to his upbringing. Lots of greys and blues, conservative, but not stuffy. But when he is required to suit up, he not only looks comfortable, he looks professional, and very sharp.

So I think Bruce's style will follow the same lines. I don't expect him to be a fashion plate, but I do expect him to take consideration into how he's dressed.

Selina Kyle in a purple cocktail dress and green scarf would be appropriate. Bruce with purple work gloves fixing up the Batmobile in the garage. Alfred showing bulges of tactical gear and hidden weapons underneath designer clothes

Assuming that Pattinson's take is in keeping with traditional portrayals of Bruce Wayne, one could argue that he's even more privileged by comparison. Granted, when it comes to nouveau riche families, the Kennedys (JFK's kids in particular by virtue of their maternal upbringing) serve as a notable exception to stereotype unlike a certain ahem, US President; they've no doubt come a long way since Joe P. moved heaven and earth to get his famous son in the White House. And with the current year in mind, some might even consider them a very late addition to the the "old money" elite, supplanting the Vanderbilts whose once high standing was lost in the process of squandering away their fortune. But you still have more than a few fossilized thinkers out there, remnants of a time when it was commonplace to look down on Kennedys not just because of their new money origins but also on account of their practiced Catholicism. "Lace curtain Irish" was, in fact, one of the more derogatory terms used against them back in the day.

Point being, Bruce descends from wealthy Protestants who made their fortune several generations ago and on this side of the pond specifically. His forebears would have never had to earn or fight for acceptance into the various upper class social circles; they would've always had a place at the top of the hierarchy.

I don’t have the energy to look up the tweet/post from the time, but I remember seeing something that I thought was really interesting when the set photos of Pattinson, Kravitz, Farrell and Turturro were released about the different textures of all their coats. I’m really eager to see what Durran is bringing us all throughout the film.
