The Daily Planet - Superman News and Speculation Thread

You're kind of saying it yourself here. Snyder's take didn't quite hit the mark. A different script, director and star might. A soup ain't a bad idea on principle just because someone fumbled the recipe once.
Never know what people will respond to. That’s for sure.
But my point was really that Snyder’s vision was not acceptable to a lot of people that wanted a more traditional take on the character.
This next version certainly does not seem like it will be MORE traditional.

Is almost like people don't all think the same thing ;) :o

Don't tell the restore crowd :o

My main oncerns about the movie are: that it will be divisive, not only for the choices of Superman, but also from the history of Superman movies themselves, which tend to being divisive.

Also, the choice of Coates to write a superhero movie. His work in comics, both on Black Panther and Captain America is, at best mediocre, and, it worst really bad. It doesnt inspire much confidence, imo.

I’ve become much more convinced that this movie won’t have either Kent or Elis. I very much suspect Coates to invent a new civilian identity but keep the original Kal-El birthname and origin.

Interesting and plausible... I was thinking that dc might do a 'what if' line...

What if Kal El looked like earths African race... ya see, this opens up a can of worms... African, African American, black... what does it mean to be black on earth... not just America...

That's what I liked about superman, he looked like his adoptive family, he looked like the majority around him... but he wasn't... he didn't fit in...

But then, if his aesthetics are to be changed, why does it have to be the unfortunately all too obvious 'African american' look.. why not middle eastern.. why not asian, Latina... it's like the only minority race that counts is black...

I have always said, Clark Kent should be played by an actor that looks to have jewish ancestry, eastern European, middle eastern... there is def a trait, stereotypes etc, actors like Liev Schreiber, Jake Gyllenhaal, She Lebeouf... when you study DNA, heritage, locations and migration, there are distinct traits, I have always said clark Kent should represent that look... it's not a look I can say reflects me, so I have no personal infested interest.. but I just like source material being respected... those jewish men told a personal story through superman.

Never know what people will respond to. That’s for sure.

More traditional hasn't been seen for decades... superman just has this place in pop culture that people understand... they understand he has a secret identity, alter ego... clark Kent is Boy Scout, farm boy from the Americana era... it represents something... by all means, reboot, change up superman... make it something different... but make it for the right reasons...

Interviewer : Speaking of things that are wild, you are now participating in the legacy of one of the most powerful superhero characters. What can you say about Superman and what the journey has been like for you thus far?

Ta-Nehisi Coates : Nothing I can say would be helpful here. Absolutely nothing. Nothing I can say will do anything to improve how this film is ultimately received. I got a big thing: I want people to have their own experience with the art, and I don’t want to step on it. I don’t want them to hear me. I don’t want them to see me. As much as possible, I really don’t want them to see me. I want them to see what we ultimately produce. And so what I’m trying to do is ... I’m not even being coy here.

We live in an era where people — because you have social media and can share so much — the instinct when you’re creating is to let fans in on the process, to let them see where you’re going. And I might could do that after. That might be an aftermath thing I would do, but I do worry about doing injustice to the art.

I just worry that you are, however unintentionally, seeding ideas in people’s head. Now, look, there’s a point where you have trailers and things where I’m going to have to talk about it, but if it were up to me, I wouldn’t say anything ever until it’d been out and seen and consumed and all of that. I don’t want to get in the way. I want Superman to have his chance.

Fair.

I really want him to live. I want him to be greeted. I don’t want me and whatever baggage the narrative of me has to overshadow that.

Random cool content. This cape length rocks, however.

This is the realist thing I've seen. I thought I read early on when the "news" was announced that the character would be either Calvin Ellis or Val-Zod.

Is that still the case or possibly the case? Or are they definitely moving forward with Clark Kent?

I enjoyed some of the comics that I read with these characters. In fact, I read some of them at the time just because of the change and diversity and curiosity. Calvin ellis, Val-Zod, Miles Moralis to name a few.

I fully support those characters for the big screen and was even excited if that was the case! DC branching out with Hollywood Multiverse movies and expanding the DC Universe. Fantastic Idea. Would even love to see an eventual crossover event with Henry Superman and Calvin or Val teaming up or something in a multiverse type film.

But leaving him Clark Kent and changing race just to to do it? I just dont get it.

I mean, I get the argument, He is an alien so why does he have to be "white". I mean, he could be green for all that matters because he's an alien right? Well not to me. For me its the history, its what we know, He is the OG Superhero that has been presented the same way for decades.

I'm not saying that just about Superman, there are so many characters that I wouldnt want to see this happen with. This also goes for characters already based on different races.

I wouldn't understand the change nor like a "white" Blade recast, a "White" Storm recast, a "Black" Batman recast, a "Asian" Peter Parker, A Character being changed from a man to a woman or a woman character being changed to a male character, etc. etc.

Again, I love Miles Morales and these other "Multiverse" characters that are indeed the same Superheroes. But, with that, you can get change and diversity while also being original at the same time. New stories, new characters etc. etc.

Sure there are characters that have changed race and have done so successfully. But most of the those were not, or at least at one point not necessarily the "A-Team" of super heroes. At one point and time, Much of the Marvel Universe wasn't as popular as it is now. I'm old enough to remember that. So yeah some race swapping has happened there and that is fine. I love Samuel Jackson as Fury, I loved Michael Duncan as Kingpin to name a few.

I guess all I'm saying is I welcome diversity, I welcome it very much. But I personally just hate when people change things for the sake of changing it when there is so many other established opportunities.

Soooooo, what's the point of the black Superman film if they're doing a tv series of it. Is the film still happening?
If the film is happening, I'm almost certain it's Clark Kent now.

This will probably get a movie or a role in a movie if it generates enough... the whole multiverse concept opens up loads now.

I love the clark Kent story, to me, Val Zod is just another super hero story - but, if kids see and are inspired by another hero with the s on his chest, that's all that matters really.

Well, you can have more than one Black Superman, and there is more than one Black Superman in the comics so, they could have one on film and one on TV .

Fans have wanted a white Superman, Cavill ,on film while having a white Superman, Tyler , on tv at the same time, so , it wouldn't be unprecedented to have two Supermen of the same race on tv and film simultaneously.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the film project has now become the MBJ project, and now it will be a series as opposed to a film.

Love this news
as a limited series, it will a first of it's kind and will get a good budget and respect... I can see it as a back door entrance to movies, same with batgirl etc.. honestly, I have no stake in this, but it will be cool to watch non the less. I just wish they didn't waste doomsday and death/return story line.... I wanted steel, superboy, eradicator... damn that would have been good...

I know they could have more than 1 Black Superman, but it does feel like a gradual pivoting away from the film idea.

I feel they are stepping lightly... that can then open so many doors....
it's smart to me...

They can build a new universe there. Bring in Powergirl.

Really if they wanted you could continue what Snyder was doing with the Knightmare storyline and use the Earth-2 storyline for it. Because how Val-Zod is introduced it really falls in line with Snyder's plans. Even the corrupt Superman storyline falls in line with it if you change it a little bit to the evil Superman being a clone of Superman since Darkseid wasn't able to turn him.

I'm black and I don't really understand what would make a black Kal-El/Clark Kent Superman any different from what we have seen before unless it's another story dealing with racism. If it is a racism story then there are other black preexisting heroes that are more suited to telling a story about that.

A Calvin Ellis or Val Zod or John Henry Irons/Steel Superman movie I could see the appeal of. Those characters are different enough from the Kal-El version of Superman to be worth seeing adapting.

I'm not against the JJ/Coates film but I'm curious to see what will make it unique enough to be worth watching beyond simply swapping the characters race.

Once again Calvin Ellis is still Kal-El. I try and separate the two by just calling it how it is Calvin and Clark.

They paid half a billion for JJ. I don't see them shelving the movie

I havent read a comic that features Calvin, whats his personality like? How does he differ to our basic idea of Clark?
