Shang-Chi 2 Discussion Thread

Call me crazy but this is what I think the sequel should be called

"Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings"

Hear me out for a second. The movie did not spend any time explaining the origins of the Ten Rings or how Wen Wu got it. During the mid credit ending they hint that the the main subject that will be explored in a future film will be the actual Ten Rings of power that Wen Wu wields.

So it definitely feels like the title of the first film was mainly a reference to the organization that Wen Wu lead instead of the rings of power that he wore. I know they won't use the same title again but it sure feels like they could, hence my joke.
My choice for the title would be Shang Chi: TOLDJA!

I think they wanted to focus on developing Shang and repair the Mandarin image. I guess they could have went with Fang instead of the Dweller since Fang is probably not as known to casual fans. It would have felt like Dormammu in that I wanted a bit more of him in the movie once he was revealed. If they use Fang Foom in the sequel as a sole villain they can have more time, it is a big dragon like monster so not a lot of time but some.

How is Dweller more known to casual fans?

Meant it as Dweller is not known but majority fan of comics or casual.
FFF is known to casuals if they played some previous video games like Ultimate Alliance, I think FFF was in Iron Man cartoon as well.
The marketing was on the Mandarin, so maybe they may have wanted to go with the really unknown that could be a throw away. That way they can build another movie off of FFF could not with Dweller. If that makes sense

IMHO it would've been a natural fit, since Fin Fang Foom is more like an alien or extra-dimensional dragon, you also could've tied him into the origin of the Ten Rings themselves and why the rings could control or subjugate him.

I know the Dweller is a monster from the comics, but I just found Dweller to basically be Cthulhu-lite.

Given the way the film ends with talk of signals to space...

Just hear me out...

Fing Fang Foom and the his Makluan crew mo-cap played by legends of the martial arts movie world.

Okay I looked this up and Xialing and Wenwu are amalgamation of the characters from the comiXs... but I wonder why they just didn't use those names rather creating a different name.
So Marvel legally can't use the original character names for Shang Chi's sister and father. The comics currently have those names as Zheng Bao Yu and Zheng Zu. To me, they might as well have used those names to help them stick a little more in the comics. Maybe they wanted to distance themselves even more from the original names, I don't know.

I've been thinking a little bit about a sequel. To me, the big aspect of the character missing is the whole espionage aspect of the original Master of Kung Fu. I'm not sure they're ever interested in going that route, but it could be fun. Probably my favorite villain/rival of Shang Chi in the comics is a character named Shen Kuei (The Cat). I also love the crazy James Bond aspect of Carlton Velcro. But that might be too over the top. I'd love Pavane and maybe Zaran the Weapons Master as other potential villains.

I suspect a lot of the sequel will deal with that signal the rings are sending off and I wouldn't be surprised if it's related to Fin Fang Foom. I'm fine with that, although I don't think we need every movie to devolve into "Shang Chi fights a dragon."

Legally can't use?

Yeah, the original names of those characters are owned by the estate of Saxer Romer and Marvel only leased those names to write the comics involving them (and then their lease rights expired).

Yeah, Fin Fang Foom and the Makluans seem inevitable based on the mid-credits scene.

But I'm curious to see if they'll still include another villain.

Does Marvel Studios have the film rights for Black Jack Tarr? I'd love to see him in a Shang-Chi movie!

As I understand it, Black Jack Tarr is an original character so Marvel can absolutely use him. They can't use Denis Nayland Smith, though.

Fin Fang Foom ain't going to fly well. It's the stereotypical of the racist "Ching Chang Chong" chant/slur.

Call him/it something else. Wenwu is The Mandarin but he's not really The Mandarin in the movie. He never actually calls or refers to himself as The Mandarin. No one calls him that. But he's for all intents and purposes the MCU's Mandarin.

Absolutely need to bring back Wenwu. It's not even up for debating as far as I'm concerned.

My fan theory is after Shang kills the dark beast, the souls return back to bodies from which they came from. Wenwu leaves Ta lo with the Death Dealer and they slowly rebuild in the shadows.

After a thousand years, he has developed some side corporations and fail safes for him to fall back on. His daughter runs the 10 rings, but Wenwu still has his own financial safety net.

What is his purpose now? Haven't fleshed that out. I believe in the comics Wenwu finds a formula for immortality. A lot of story potential there.

Either way they need to bring him back. He's a top 3 MCU villain hands down.

@eon001 I'd love it if they found a way to bring him back however I don't know if it's easy to secure Tony Leung on a multi-picture deal.

I will say I think if they can find a believable way to bring him back it would be great because as it stands all of the MCU's best villains are either dead or reformed.

Killmonger - Dead
Thanos - Dead
Wenwu - Dead
Loki - probably anti-hero now.

I know people are mixed on him but Red Skull is out there somewhere. They also have Kang, which has yet to appear in his villain form, but it would be nice if we had another good villain/antagonist alive to do team ups. If that's one thing we haven't had yet in the MCU is an in-universe team up of fan favorite villains in a movie (not counting No Way Home as that's multiversal from other continuities). Hopefully we get that someday.

I’m looking forward to a sequel, not sure where they can go but obviously they will probably focus on his mum more.I don’t mind if they nick a bit from iron fist and use fat cobra as the red guardian type comic relief slash bad ash.

also, I think it’s important to give Shang chi a romantic lead, not Katy because I think they work better as friends. So many people talk about the desexualisation of Asian men, it’s an easy hurdle to jump over

It's just my impression based on the story. He no longer seems to have the same evil ambitions as before.
