Discussion: The DEMOCRATIC P - Part 3

Liberal backlash against Sinema grows on Capitol Hill as potential Arizona challenger emerges - CNNPolitics

Potential primary challenge
The final phases of the negotiations could be critical to her constituents and powerful organizations back home.

In September, AARP Arizona requested a meeting with Sinema after learning that she didn't support allowing Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices. But the senator was unavailable to meet the advocacy group for those over 50 years old, which claims over 900,000 members in Arizona, and instead the organization met with Sinema's staff.

AARP Arizona state director Dana Kennedy said she typically works with the senator's staff, "but [on] something like this, we should hear directly from the senator."

"We do hope she supports allowing Medicare to negotiate because her constituents certainly support it," Kennedy said in an email. "She ran on lowering Rx costs and that is how you do it AND it saves Medicare BILLIONS of dollars."

Sinema's aides though, says they have been public about her stance on the issue and supports other drug pricing proposals, pointing to comments she made recently to the Arizona Republic saying that Congress "should be focused on policies that ensure prescription drugs are available at the lowest possible cost."

There’s no way she’s running for re-election next term.

Oh, I think she'll run.....she just won't win, but what she may be doing is prepping for her cozy, high paying job in the private sector.

I can’t imagine she’s that stupid. She’s burned her bridges with her constituents and I don’t think they’ll forget that come 2024. Unless she does something major before then - and I mean major - she’s at LEAST looking at a primary challenger who’ll hammer her in her opposition to allowing Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices.

Oh, she'll get a challenger. I think that's a given and I frankly don't like her chances. She's got more egg on her face than a 4 year old who just finished an omelette.

EDIT: Did I mention how intrinsically unlikeable she is?

My impression of her is that she’s a grifter. She’s gonna make all the money she can while in office and get the hell out. She’s not acting like someone who’s trying to earn a second term.

Fox News likes her. This is Tulsi Gabbard level crazy.

According to some people, she's no good at her job and there's a whole slew of people who would do better.

Who could replace her?

No idea but I doubt they’re short on candidates.

Steny Hoyer? Adam Schiff? I’m unfortunately unaware of a female candidate who could realistically get the job. Maybe Pramila Jayapal?

Hoyer would probably be the best bet and the best fit. Jayapal couldn't get the support of the majority of the party. Doing Pelosi's job is Fing difficult and not a lot of people are ready for it. While you may not like her politics, she is an exceedingly shrewd and successful politician. Her daughter once said "She'll cut your head off and you won't even know you're bleeding". I think that pretty much sums it up.

There's been chatter / speculation that it's Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) as the next Democratic leader or Speaker. I wish the party would find someone outside of NY or CA. Two NY leaders (Schumer and Jeffries) is a bit much.

I never got this. During election years, we're hammered home about how important the Midwest and Rust Belt are to this country and this party never gets a representative from one of these states. Fudge being from Ohio would have been a refreshing change of pace.

Hoyer is from MD, but I get your drift. Personally, I think Pelosi is saying that because she recognizes there's a good chance the dems lose the house. If they don't, I think she'll stay on for another term.

If nothing else, you need someone who isn’t going to embarrass the Party by bringing bills to the floor that are doomed to fail.

EDIT: I remember her cutting a deal with the caucus to retire next time she was up for re-election as a condition of resuming her leadership post in the first place. It’s easy to forget now, but she was a (and I use this term very lightly) controversial choice for Speaker amongst House Democrats back in 2018.

I don't think Maryland cuts it as Rust Belt or Midwest. Maybe adjacent? I think it's still considered Northeast.

I had forgotten about that, but I think she's in a stronger position now. She probably HAS to say that given that deal. I still think she stays. I doubt the progressives can get someone they would prefer and certainly they won't find anyone as shrewd. AOC herself said she's not ready for being speaker. I think a lot of the new reps underestimated what it takes to be a good speaker.

It doesn't, but it's not NY or CA. LOL.

Will that even matter at the end of the day? I’m not sure the average voter cares who the Speaker of the House is, much less where they come from.

I always found it interesting. I like Jayapal, but she's definitely not ready for Speaker.
