Discussion: Relations with Russia

US considering sending extra weaponry to Ukraine as fears mount over potential Russian invasion - CNNPolitics
The Biden administration is weighing sending military advisers and new equipment including weaponry to Ukraine as Russia builds up forces near the border and US officials prepare allies for the possibility of another Russian invasion, multiple sources familiar with the deliberations tell CNN.

The discussions about the proposed lethal aid package are happening as Ukraine has begun to warn publicly that an invasion could happen as soon as January. The package could include new Javelin anti-tank and anti-armor missiles as well as mortars, the sources said.

The Washington Post - Russia planning massive military offensive against Ukraine involving 175,000 troops, U.S. intelligence warns

As tensions mount between Washington and Moscow over a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine, U.S. intelligence has found the Kremlin is planning a multi-front offensive as soon as early next year involving up to 175,000 troops, according to U.S. officials and an intelligence document obtained by The Washington Post.

I'm not saying this situation isn't dangerous, but on balance I don't think a full-scale Russian invasion is likely. The reason being that while Ukraine would obviously lose, its armed forces are in much better shape now than they were in 2014, meaning that Russia would not be able to do it without sustaining significant losses. In particular, the Russians would have to make massive and concentrated use of airpower and I'm not sure that the sight of Kyiv being flattened is something the so-called international community would tolerate.

Not to mention that the political and economic consequences (even more sanctions, further diplomatic isolation from the West), would be severe. Russia would become even more of an international pariah than it already is.

Instead, I see this a move by Putin to try and get concessions by manufacturing a crisis and trying to get everyone scared.

At this point, I’m skeptical of anything that sounds like war is imminent. It feels like we’ve been at the brink of war with North Korea a dozen times over the past ten years.

Russia would almost certainly be banned from the winter Olympics and I don't think they want to risk that.

Nothing to see here. Just "patriot" Tucker Carlson fanboying over his favourite foreign despot.

Here's the original video in case you don't believe it (1:40-2:02):

NATO was literally created as an anti-USSR (Russia) defensive alliance.

Yeah...it's just the leader of the biggest fragment has been trying to put Humpty Dumpty back together again after saying that the dissolution of the USSR was the worst thing that ever politically happened.

NBC News - Putin: Soviet collapse a 'genuine tragedy' (2005)
In his annual state of the nation address on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the collapse of the Soviet empire “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.”

Thank god my parents both stopped listening to him once they learned not only of his connections to Swanson, but his friendship with Hunter.

Oh yeah, nostalgia for the Soviet Union (and its superpower status) is definitely big in Russia today. Its why Stalin is more popular now than he's been for decades.

I find it hilarious how conservatives like Tucker love Putin so much, and yet are simultaneously super-hawkish on China. Its almost like they're not aware of the increasingly close ties between Beijing and Moscow, or the fact that Russia and China held joint military exercises just earlier this year:

If (God forbid) war between the US and China broke out, Russia would be on Xi's side; not America's.

It’s a race thing with them why they favor Russia over China. Though they praise sometimes China for misogynistic reasons as well.

Because appeasement always worked so well in the past.

Shorter Gabbard: Give Russia everything they want. Give all the world's bullies and dictators what they want.

As usual she's wrong here. A friend Ukraine is requesting our help defending their territory here. Notice she doesn't even mention Ukraine like they don't exist. Probably thinks they belong to Russia just like Fox News thinks that they do. Russia invaded Ukraine and took over parts back in 2014 and these appeasers if not collaborators are fine if it happens even more and then they'll blame Biden anyway if it did instead of daddy Putin and mother Russia.

They cloak their support for Russian imperialism behind the façade of support for U.S. isolationism.
