Strange New Worlds Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - General Discussion Thread

Discovery should have set in the 32nd Century from the start.

I would like to see new toys based on Strange New Worlds.

The pilot episode will be on Youtube tomorrow at 3am for a limited time.

I don't know about 32nd, but I think it should've jumped ahead at least as far as TNG did from TOS.

The continuity in these shows is screwed up and makes no sense. Forcing Discovery and Strange New Worlds into the "prime" timeline was a mistake.

I do love the idea of separating the sciences and medical blues.

I hate how even videos like that are geo-blocked. So here I am, using a VPN to make it seem like I'm from Chicago, just to watch a video about the uniforms.

Yeah vpn's are great for watching anything from anywhere. You can actually watch Star Trek Series in the UK on netflix, I guess they don't do Paramount yet.

The only downside is the enemy can target the doctors more easily if they know the differences and they want to ambush the landing party. But for this show if we only meet new aliens it should be fine.

Not really sure why that matters for costuming, but whatever.

because it is a tv show, and tv shows have plots and stories. The costume department works for the show, and the showrunners approve the items that go into their shows that affect their stories.

Pffft everyone knows you aim for the people in red shirts first.

What was the point of Kirk's brother being on the show again? He's absolutely useless.

Captain Kirk knows that Spock served under Pike but his older brother did not?

There's been 2 episodes. He showed up at the end of one and was briefly in the other. That equals useless lol?

Yes.

Also it's problematic that Kirk is an officer on the Enterprise and this is supposed to be an Original Series prequel.

It really isn't. The only thing we know about Sam from TOS is that he was working as a civilian research biologist on Deneva in 2267, where he died with his wife.

Here, in 2259, he's a biologist/life scientist in Starfleet. All that means is that from 2259 to 2267, Kirk changes employers and goes from Starfleet to civilian service. He even keeps the same job.

If the "major canon violation" you were going on about in the thread for the first episode was the fact that no one mentioned Sam served with Spock or Pike in TOS, I don't really think that qualifies. This isn't contradicting anything shown on screen, it's just taking advantage of gaps in these fictional characters' established history. There are going to be lots of things in this show that never end up mentioned in TOS. You either have to go with the ride or keep shouting into the void. If Kirk dies in the next episode, then we'll have issues.

It most definitely qualifies. Kirk made it a point to mention to the Commodore that Spock served under Pike on the Enterprise, but his own older brother did not?

The show is trying to put a square peg into a round hole.

This is the biggest problem with the series. It's really not good at maintaining canon.

Here's the quote you're fixating on:

MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike?
KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.
MENDEZ: About your age. Big, handsome man, vital, active.
KIRK: I took over the Enterprise from him. Spock served with him for several years.
SPOCK: Eleven years, four months, five days.
MCCOY: What's his problem, Commodore?
MENDEZ: Inspection tour of a cadet vessel. Old Class J starship. One of the baffle plates ruptured.
MCCOY: The delta rays?
MENDEZ: He went in bringing out all those kids that were still alive. Just wanted you gentlemen to be prepared.

They're only talking about Pike, in a critical situation that directly involves Pike. Why on earth would he mention any one else, related or not, in that situation? The Queen of England could have been at helm back then, and it's still not relevant to bring up in a situation about Pike alone.

"Yeah, we really need to figure out why Spock faked an order from Pike to redirect the ship, but let me first go over the bridge crew from back then..."

That you're annoyed that Sam wasn't mentioned in a distressful and uncertain situation that had nothing to do with him in the slightest, is such a reach. That conversation was about Pike and Spock, and Pike and Spock alone.

To emphasize how ridiculous this is, here is the scene. He mentions Spock for two obvious reasons:

1. Spock received the transmission, and

2. Spock's literally standing right there.

The scene is clearly built around Spock's relationship to Pike. Which is why we have the big ole emotional moment between the two. There is no reason for Kirk's bro to be mentioned. At all.

As Jack Reacher says, "Details matter."

...It's like talking to the black hole at the centre of the galaxy...

Ok, have fun stewing on it.

Listen, in case you haven't noticed, I've been highly praising and complimentary of the show. This is my main and really only issue. And this is only one example of many continuity errors. I don't think presenting and saying this a prequel to the original series makes sense because they are already well off that path.

My point is they shouldn't be struggling to say this is a prequel to TOS. Just say they are playing around with a brand-new sandbox, a brand-new timeline and a universe that's similar to that era but it's not the same one. It's called criticism. You don't have to agree with it. That's fine, but this is what I'm expressing.
