The General Comic Discussion Thread - Part 2

I’m curious. What is everyone’s opinions on Kamandi? What do you think about the character in general and what do you think about Kirby’s original run?

I rank Kamandi up there with Mister Miracle and OMAC as pure, uncut Kirby. Those titles are Kirby at his best: uninhibited, cosmic, imaginative, bonkers, brilliant. It's clear he's having a total blast.

That said, I've only ever read the first 5 issues of his Kamandi, but it was such a fun read. The cover for issue 1 is so iconic.

There's a really great Kamandi story by David Gibbons and Ryan Sook from that Wednesday Comics book DC put out over a decade ago that really taps into this Hal Foster/Prince Valiant style that's worth checking out.

Tom King also did a chapter of the Kamandi Challenge, issue 9, from a few years ago that might be one of the single best comics he's ever written. That is very much worth tracking down. It's up there with his Green Lantern Darkseid War one-shot.

First comics week of July, and it’s a big one.

Batman #125

Finally, the beginning of Zdarskys run.
God did I miss Jimenez art on Batman, he is so god damn good.
The way he works with colors, the way he draws characters and movement…it is so layered and just incredible.
I havent read any interviews or so, but the first issue seems to indicate that Zdarsky maybe focuses more on Bruce…and I love the idea, now bring me good Batfamily content and im happy.

The first issue flows well, the characters don’t sound out of character, the pacing is good…all great work there.
So that’s a fantastic start already.

As for covers…boy I think there are at least 10 from what I gather.
From people like Jim Lee, Alex Ross, Gabriele Dell'Otto, Jock but I think Simone Di Meo’s cover works best for me.

Batman 89 #6

So that was the long awaited Batman 89 series…I have to say that I am dissapointed.
It had a weird vibe, hardly managed to get the feeling of Burtons universe across and the characters, especially those we knew from the movies, felt kind of out of character.
It was strangely paced and the long breaks between issues, didn’t help at all.

I will definitly get the whole Volume when it comes out(If it comes out, what I hope and assume), but its not the hoped hit.
It leaves you in a weird state of “That’s it? Really?”.

The Covers are worth the price alone almost I feel, especially if you are a fan of Burtons universe.

Batman: Killing Time #5

Okay it cant be just me who gets kind of irritated by the constant jumping around.
I lost a few times a complete sense of time and situation because suddenly we were somewhere else and all.
Somehow Kings writing here gets more convoluted as time goes on.
Visual still fantastic and all, but I find myself having to read this in a very slow pace to not lose attention and understanding.
But I found the ending of this issue kind of cool, wont lie.
That I didn’t expect and it made me react, so that’s good.
There is still a lot unanswered in this, the last issue has to do a lot to wrap this all up.

Kael Ngu’s cover definitly takes the number 1 spot in that for me.

Dark Crisis #2

That one was a good issue, continuity is a bit wonky or maybe I stumble there on my own.
But overall, that shapes up to be very interesting…the build up does a good job moving tension forward.

Really liking the Main Cover on this.

The Joker #15

What a weird book, weird and entertaining.
As this started, I was just curious but didn’t expect much.
Now after 15 issues, Im really pleased with it.
I never expected that, but hey…being positively surprised is something good.
But im also kind of glad they didn’t drag it out further, it was time to end it and im glad they did.

While it doesn’t fit the Comic in terms of the name and all, Guillem March’s cover with Bane and his Daugther is pretty cool.

Nubia: Queen of the Amazons #2

Underrated.
Im really liking the vibe, the art and general tone of this.
I like the characters and the story…so to me its definitly a good series.

Taurin Clarke’s cover on this is so fire.

Poison Ivy #2

Damn you DC, don’t keep showing me Ivy/harley while not going through with it for long…stop teasing.
Issue 2 is really good too, this one shapes up to be a great story if they can keep this going…Im really pleased with this and enjoyed both issues so far.

It has a good variety of covers that are all lovely, but I like the normal one the most I think.

A very good start to the Month, and the month shapes up to be good in general.
So im quite pleased and it was money well spent.

Love the KAMANDI story that appeared in Wednesday Comics from about a dozen years ago.
Beautiful art by Ryan Sook.

I read the Tom King Kamandi Challenge issue. Now I’m going to have to read the whole series!

Kamandi is very much pure Kirby. I love it when he gets totally bonkers. (But my all time favorite Kirby work is probably Forever People.)

A “small” comics week this time

Batgirls #8

I don’t know, part of me really liked this one but the other…its Batgirls dude, not Batgirl featuring Nightwing.
For one issue okay no doubt, but this series is so fun when you have it focus on the girls.
This was something that felt more like It belonged into the Nightwing book.
But I cant deny, the Dick/Barbara stuff we get, has captured my heart.
The more the better I guess.
So I guess its fine for this issue, but I don’t want Stephanie and Cass taking a backseat for longer.
It was a good issue don’t get me wrong, just for the wrong book I feel like.

Batman Urban Legends #17

I was thinking about dropping in because of the prize and size, but then they bring in a issue with batman teaming up with Flash, aquaman and then Black Adam.
Really cool issue, good stories, great art(Did batmans underwater gear remind anybody else off those old, weird batman toys you could buy that had some special gimmick?)…I will keep Urban Legends definitly for a while if they continue with good stuff like that.

Superman: Son of Kal-El #13

What was going on with that art?
At first it was really nice and all, but as the issue got farther, the art noticeable seemed to lose its quality…very weird.
But anyway, the story itself is a nice setup, Im curious where we go from here.
The writing in general is better again, the last few issues werent as good imo.
Still, I feel like im losing interest in it slowly because it does too little work on Jon as character.
That is what I always said is my biggest problem and where I have high expectations…maybe too high.
You took superboy Jon Kent from me…so you better put extra work into it.
Which I have yet to see, while giving them constantly a long leash.
But at some point I will give up if they don’t step up and make bigger moves with Jon.

Wonder Woman #789

Saw some people say this arc channels the early days Wonder Woman…maybe, but im not feeling it.
Im just not really interested in this arc and how Diana deals with it.
I cant put my finger onto the why, I just know that WW is currently a comic that I pretty much read hoping that it gets better.
Sad to see when left and right so good stuff comes out and she gets a main series that feels medicore to me.

Wonder Woman: Evolution #8

Final issue of this…and it fizzles out in my opinion.
A uninspiring and downright boring final act to a series that started out quite good.
It felt rushed and lacked depth and makes the whole series feel empty.

So yeah, a small week that for the most part really doesn’t deliver.
But you got a Batman Urban legends with 4 stories that make up for a otherwise weak week.

It’s funny, I was enjoying the issue so much that I didn’t even recognize the aspects that you point out. But I totally see what you are saying. Still,…what a phenomenally fun book!

I find it interesting that with all of the reputation that DC has for being the “edgy” and “dark” comics, that right now, they are firing on all cylinders with fun-loving comics that have feel like modernized Bronze Age comics. Nightwing, Robin, Batgirls, World’s Finest, The Flash…they’ve all been a breath of fresh air.

I’m in and I’m loving it!

Small Week.

Rogues #3 was another solid issue. Really shows Williamson's strengths as a writer when he's not an architect of continuity crisis extravaganzas.

HOWEVER

NONE of you bought the Dark Crisis World Without A Justice: Superman one-shot? Mouthful of a title, but a blissful slice of brilliance. This is where Tom King excels as a writer. His 12-issue maxi series can be concise, but he's given a one-shot or a short story, he's at the top of his game.

For those of you bemoaning Bendis for aging Jon Kent up to an 18 year old, this book makes up for that in spades. King tells a short story of Clark raising Jon from the ages 13 to 18, as Jon struggles to find himself, and Clark struggles to comes to terms with that. It expertly deals with the struggles and fears and ultimate reward of being a parent and does so against the tapestry of the superheroics. I've read it three times.

Obviously, this is all a delusion caused by the machinations of Pariah in the Dark Crisis book. We know this. But the best part of this book is the end,
where we discover that Clark is aware that this is all nonsense, but lets himself off the hook because, real or not, he finally got the missing years with Jon back.

This is one of the better one-shots of the year, and King's formalist style as a writer really shines here, especially compared to the turgid Aquaman back-up tale. It's just a beautiful story and you owe it to yourselves to read it ASAP.

I picked up the Tom King Dark Crisis Superman book but haven’t pried it away from my son yet to be able to read it!

If you put this Batgirls issue into the Nightwing book *Chefs Kiss*, but when it comes to batgirls im so greedy.
I want ever issue filled to the brim with barbara, cass, Stephanie...i want extra sized issues, i want it all.
It is so much fun and i love the dynamic those three have in the series...i want more of that.

Now that you mention it, the comics really dont feel too dark or edgy when i think about it.
Even the elseworld kind of books for the most part manage to have a brighter tone.
And im definitly loving that.

All y’all had to say was “Tom King wrote another Superman book” and I’m there. Even though I don’t care about Dark Crisis or any big crossover events.

I totally forgot about superman dark crisis, first time i Skipped checking out if i missed any Comic, and it happens when King writes another superman Story, shame on me...gotta fix that tomorrow.

Comics week, and it was fun.

Aquaman & The Flash: Voidsong #2

I said it before, but I love this kind of team ups so much.
Loved the Aquaman/Green Arrow and I love this as much.
And the story is cool too, same with the art.
I could do with a few more of those series, mixing up teams and stuff.

Batman/Superman: Worlds Finest #5

Waid and Mora are an amazing duo, and each issue of this series feels like a silver age issue. This series has a timeless quality to it.
The art is fantastic, the character feel genuine…I love it so much.

Batman The Knight #7

Im slowly getting really into Bruce/Zatanna with how much stuff we got with them.
And they fit so well together.
But outside of that, The Knight is such a fantastic book that does a incredible job on telling the story of Bruce becoming Batman.
Im loving the art and the writing…such a good book and every issue is incredible.

Black Adam #2

This is such a good book, I didn’t expect that.
It definitly delivers and has me hooked so hard.
Cool ideas and a crisp writing, it rises in my ranks fast.

Dark Crisis: Young Justice #2

Weird, just weird.
Issue 1 was fine, but this one feels so off on many corners that I don’t know if I like it or not.
Its young justice yeah, but such a weirdly written issue.
I don’t know, I cant wrap my head around it.

The Flash #784

Flash keeps being a wild and fun ride, cant say it any different way.
It keeps you on your toes, makes you really get into it and invest your time in it.
And in the end it delivers, leaving you with utter joy.

Jurassic League #3

Holy bad place, the art was so crazy distracting at times…way too colorfull and crazy for my taste.
I lost a few times track on wha was going on.

But Jurassic League continues to be a wild and crazy idea that is just fun as bad place.
Such a crazy concept and they go all out with it.
Insanity in the best way possible.

Nightwing #94

The pacing has slowed down noticeably, maybe to get a big issue 100?
Who knows, you notice it either way…don’t know if its good or bad.

But I liked the issue, it was fun, nicely drawn and I enjoyed it.

One thing that is not talked about enough, is the incredible covers Nightwing got.
This one is just one of many examples…incredible cover art runs through this and I hope the volumes have all them inside…you never know.
Would be shame if not.

Well, that’s about it for this week.
A really fun week with really just one comic that felt a bit weird.
Next week should be fun with One dark knight and finally the new team on Detective comics starting.

EDIT: Oh and not to forget the absolutely beautiful tribute to Neal Adams, it brought tears to my eyes, i wont lie.

Yeah, Tom King did a great job writing that tribute, but I am ashamed to say that in the last panel where you see the line of characters standing there waiting to meet with Neal, and Batman is holding a stack of comics, I had a less than courteous thought. As someone who has met Neal at cons, I kept thinking “if Batman is planning to have all of those signed, he had to have mortgaged Wayne manner.”

But alas, for me it was $50 well spent to get Neal to sign a reprint copy of Jokers Five Way Revenge, even if he did put part of the signature in a shadow while he signed with a black sharpie.

I really enjoyed this issue, but this might’ve been the first time in Taylor’s run that his Nightwing wasn’t my favorite comic in the week it came out. I like Blockbuster as a villain, but the book could benefit from having Nightwing go against someone other than Heartless or Blockbusters goons. I do love that he essentially devotes everything he has to fighting corruption first and foremost; and he does it both as Nightwing and as Dick Grayson.

But the star of this week was certainly Worlds Finest. Mark Waid is a true master as always. He may be the best writer of all time.

I have no idea where Priest is going with Black Adam, but I am completely on board and I’m in it till the end. It’s shaping up to be a great ride, Priest is one of those writers who forever has my trust.

Some recent reads of mine:

Batman Urban Legends vol 1; this collects the Red Hood and Grifter stories from the first couple of issues. The Red Hood stuff was fun, nothing spectacular, but a good read at least. Great artwork for sure. The Grifter stuff wasn't really my taste, and it's not a character that ever interested me. Decent artwork though, I guess.

Star Wars High Republic vol 1; This is a title I've been curious about ever since they announced it but it took me this long to actually bite the bullet, and honestly, not my cup of tea. Thought it was pretty bland with a couple of weird moments and pretty generic artwork.
Has anyone read any more from this title? Or even any of the novels?

Agreed. Grifter is an awful character. He’s so derivative. That story was far too drawn out and was ultimately why I dropped Urban Legends.

What did everyone think of the Superman/Dark Crisis tie-in?

New Comics week was surprising..

Detective Comics #1062 saw the debut of the new creative team of Ram V and Rafael Albuquerque and I am absolutely hooked.

Ram V has quickly become one of my favorite comics writers, bringing a literary and sophisticated flair to his books. Detective Comics is no different, where he sets a tone bordering an operatic Gothic nightmare. He sets a very distinct and unsettling mood that burrows under your skin before you realize what's happened. And if you didn't tell me that was Rafael Albuquerque on pencils, I wouldn't have known. His style here is much looser, more rounded than the more angular and thick style I'm accustomed to seeing.

And then there's the back-up tale of Commisioner Gordon taking up a missing person's case written by Si Spurrier, writer of the brilliant and much missed Hellblazer, and illustrated by Dani of Coffinbound fame. It reeks of destitute, hardboiled, grimy noir. Gotham Central in bad place. One bad place of a creative team this whole book has. This could be something special. Needless to say, I'm hooked and will probably pass up on Zdarsky's Batman, which feels very vanilla by comparison.

Speaking of Ram V, Swamp Thing #15 was another win. This book is simply brilliant. It's flowing with cosmic and challenging philosophical ideas. The character hasn't seen this level of quality since, shockingly, Mark Millar back in the mid 90s. Don't sleep on this book. Next month it ends, and it absolutely deserves more attention.

Batman: One Dark Knight concludes this week with issue 3. It's a solid conclusion that probably reads better together with the first two issues. It definitely doesn't feel as abrupt as say, Batman: Imposter did. But the ending does feel as if it was wrapped up a little too nicely. Still, a solid book that has the trappings of a small, but great film. I'd love to see this adapted in live action.

Action Comics #1045 sees two more issues to go before its conclusion and we're starting to see the endgame in sight. Clark has to weigh his options to victory and I think that whichever option he chooses, the other possibilities will weight heavily on him. This is gonna be good.

The only book I haven't gotten around to reading yet, and probably won't for a while, is Superman: Space Age #1. I'm a sucker for Mike Allred, and this book looks absolutely gorgeous and the few pages I read indicates that this story is gonna be pretty heavy. I'm all for it and very excited to dive in!

I just got done reading Superman: Space Age - Book One and it is pretty deep. I can already tell it’s gonna be a classic with beautiful storytelling and art and I love the theme of having hope even though you know the end is inevitable is truly inspiring. I definitely recommend this book. I also picked up The Flash Vol.16 trade that collects the Jermey Adams Wally West Returns issues and I can’t wait to read it, most likely on the weekend.

I was on the fence on whether to check out Space Age. I had thought about waiting for it to go on DC Infinite. But I am a sucker for a good Superman story so I might give it a look early.

It’s most definitely worth it if you ask me.

Final Comics week of July is here…july, man where does this year go? XD

Action Comics #1045

Ah such a good arc and we come to a potentially very heavy final stretch.
This is what I keep saying, challenge Clark on a level where his strength as Kryptonian isnt a lot of help, and you get something incredible.
Underrated as bad place arc, don’t see too many people talk about it sadly.
But worth every issue.

Batman: One Dark Knight #3

Damn, already the end of this…too soon.
There could have been easily 4-5 issues a less “cleaner” ending, but overall this was incredible fun.
Visual, the writing…fantastic.
I loved how it felt really like you are on ground level and not looking at it from above.
The gritty mess Bruce faces day in day out, the dangers…loving it.
The creative team definitly would get my vote to return and all, the writing and the visuals fit nicely together and would bring a lot of good stuff.

Detective Comics #1062

Finally the run of Ram V and artist Rafael Albuquerque starts…it was about time.
First things first, the art is a bit surprising because I actually somehow expected something more fantastical and “poetic” or so.
The art isnt bad, but I somehow expected it to be “more”, cant really point my finger onto it.
At times the art looks a bit rough, but then there are panels that are really neat, especially the body language and poses of characters.
Maybe I only need to get used to it because I expected something else, I don’t know.
Writing set a great mood already and puts a lot of expectations on this…im ready.

Harley Quinn #17

Same as always, I love it, it has heart, the art is expressive and colorful…a joy to read.
Nothing outstanding or so, just its usual fun level of writing and drawing.

Robin #16

Well, I certainly didn’t saw THAT coming…nobody probably did. XD
The issue, yeah it was strong as usual…which makes saying goodbye to it harder.
Great art, fantastic writing, a broad use of characters…you love it.
I really don’t want this to end. :(

Swamp Thing #15

Dissapointed as bad place how little attention this gets, because it is so god damn good.
The art is capturing your eyes, the writing your mind…an incredible series, even more since I read all issues so far in one go, it opened my mind to it even more and really shows its strength.
People miss out on some of the best Swamp Thing writing ever.

A great week to end July…a lot of fun stuff that as many other weeks makes you proud to be a DC comics fan.

Finally got around to reading Infinite Crisis. Not bad for a Crisis, imo. Took a while to get interesting for me, but overall, not bad at all. That Superboy Prime sure is...something, lol.

It's certainly getting buzz in the Superman fandom. Outside of that, I couldn't say. But I think unless PKJ massively fumbles the landing, it's safe to say this is going down as one of the great Supes stories, and a future instant-recommend for anyone looking to get into Superman. I really hope this run gets an omnibus when all's said and done. What an epic.

Superboy-Prime is a pretty tragic character. Have you read his first appearance, in the Crisis on Infinite Earths tie-in DC Comics Presents #87? You see him in his normal life as the all-American teenager (family, friends, girl he's 'sweet on',), before his world literally falls apart. Then, of course, he joins the fight against the Anti-Monitor in CoIE. It really highlights just how far he's fallen by the end of Infinite Crisis. @Babillygunn I know he's a favourite of yours.

No I skipped most of the extra COIE tie-in issues when I read it, just because all these Crisis events already involve way more characters than I care to read about tbh, so I missed that one. Still, I feel like I got the gist from what was presented in Infinite Crisis. I’ll probably go back and read that issue now, though.

It works just as well if you read it after Infinite Crisis. In fact, if anything, it's even more poignant. Hope you find it a good read
