Thor: Box Office and Predictions

For reference, Multiverse of Madness opened at a 450 million worldwide and sits at 950 overall. I doubt Love and Thunder is going to have better legs, due to a similarly lukewarm reception. I could be wrong but I don't expect it to make more than 700 million at this point.

The film feels like it could have done $170M easily had they not treated the it almost like an afterthought. This should have had a similar marketing push that Dr. Strange 2 got but instead it got a 2.5 month mad dash from the first teaser trailer to its release date that has felt rushed and just all over the place. Now I feel they're doing the same thing with Black Panther 2 as I'd be surprised if anyone really knows that film is coming out in 3 months.

Hmm I feel like Thor has a better shot for stronger legs than Dr. Strange v Scarlet Witch. This is after all the strongest Avenger.

I think Thor is generally more liked character to the public.

Yeh and this film is more family friendly than DS:MOM. Some stuff is a bit naughty but I could easily see it go over the kids head. There’s also some creepy stuff with Gorr but in the end things play well for a younger audience.

This is also the last blockbuster of the summer if I'm not miXtaken.

Nope would do well in North America but in international markets? There aren't lot of horror films that crossed 500 million worldwide.

It'll be interesting to see what the CinemaScore ends up being for this film. First overseas totals are in and the film trailing DS2 by almost 25%. Guess that shouldn't be surprising with Minions 2 competing with it.

Should be really interesting to see how big where the Thursday previews. The last hints where apparently pointing at high 20’s with a good shot at MCU Top 5.
MCU Box Office - Thursday Previews / Opening Weekends

1. Avengers: EG ---------- 60M / OW = 357M
2. Spider-Man: NWH ----- 50M / OW = 260M
3. Avengers: IW ------------ 39M / OW = 257M
4. Doctor Strange: MOM - 36M / OW = 187M
5. Avengers: AOU ---------- 27M / OW = 191M
6. Black Panther ------------- 25M / OW = 202M
7. Captain America: CW --- 25M / OW = 179M
8. Captain Marvel ------------ 20M / OW = 153M
...
Thor Ragnarok - 14.5M / OW = 122M

Fair point, I think even their worst films are still decent films at the end of the day. The MCU doesn't have a down right "bad" film imo.

Eh, I would argue Eternals qualifies as bad. Its *interesting* bad, but still bad. That said, a lot of franchises would love if their worst movie were only as bad as Eternals. I'd definitely rather watch Eternals again than, say, Batman v Superman.

Not to me

If you look at it strictly from a ratio perspective compared to Doctor Strange, you would expect something in the neighborhood of 150 million. That’s around where I thought it would probably come in. From the reviews that I’ve seen, it might not have the legs that I originally thought it would, but we’ll see.

Sure.

It’s a great result. Even with its lukewarm critical reception it still managed to do very well so far. I think this is in part because Thor is a beloved character and one of the very few remaining OG Avengers around, so there’s definitely a lot of goodwill towards the character. Ragnarok, IW and AEG to a certain extent, catapulted Thor’s popularity and appeal. Had it had a reception like Ragnarok then it would have been a juggernaut.

Yeh I think the legs might be somewhat similar to those of DS:MOM, but with an empty summer and being a more family friendly film can still give it decently good legs.

Thor: The Dark World, Eternals and Black Widow are all trash imo.

But it’s all just opinions at the end of the day. Box office sort of helps what direction they like to go thus why they changed direction after some of these underperformed.

I would like to see Thor & DS be in the 900s together. Little surprised to see it trailing behind Doctor Strange but I'm basing it on my assumption that Thor is more popular than Strange.

Thor is significantly more popular than DS.

The thing is that DS:MOM was marketed as multiverse bonanza featuring X-Men, F4, Inhumans, “What If” characters… plus a ton of other characters that where rumored to be in the film but weren’t.

TLT is more of a standalone film.

I doubt there would have been even half as much interest in DS 2 without the hype about multiversal crossovers.

That longer, almost pre-Phase 4/pandemic-like marketing campaign (which Marvel should get back to certainly back to doing) helped but DS2 also got released with almost no competition at the theaters. Thor L&T is having to go against Minions 2, Jurassic World: Dominion, Top Gun: Maverick, and Elvis.

Plus, Jordan Peele's Nope will be out in a mere two weeks.
