Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator film ‘Prey’

Looks like Mr. Magnus has released a video titled "if sarah connor and ripley were introduced today, would we call them woke?" and proceeds to list all female characters he likes while mocking people like us. Here's the thing, Sarah Connor goes from a waitress, to running from a T-1000 to being in an asylum until T2. Then all of a sudden she's a badass fighter. Sorry, I'm not buying that people wouldn't call her woke today. He specifically went into this thinking it would be "woke" and the moment Naru showed any sort of strong will, he lost his mind. Essentially, what it boils down to is you can't talk about female empowerment or else you're a terrible written character. It's such an inherently sexist mindset, it blows my mind how stupid someone can be at 45 years old no less.

Loving this artwork. Hopefully they do a comic series for the character.

Damn good shout that.

Ah the old "How can I be a sexist, my mothers a woman", card.

Its pretty clear these guys go into these things with pre-conceived notions and looking for any hint to latch onto. I hope they dont play poker because they reveal their hand so early every time.

Naru is a well written character in my book, not once does she mention she's being held back because of being a woman or by men alone, her mother doesnt want to her to hunt more than her brother who actually believes in her throughout the story. We see from the outset what she can and cant do and the film goes to painstaking lengths to show her learning, failing and overcoming her obstacles, she has a complete arc something not even Dutch had in the original film. Yes there is one joke made by a young guy about her being a cook but if they are basing their entire argument on that one line thats a bit of a stretch and a half.

3.5/5

This was pretty well made. You couldn’t make a better Predator sequel than Prey right now. But I guess I just wasn’t that compelled. Not sure what it was. It’s shot beautifully, well cast, but I wasn’t exactly gripped by it either. It also resolves in a shrug your shoulders kinda way. The flower thing was a bit like ummm suuuure. Good action though and I love that dog so much.

The difference between Naru and Sarah and Ripley is that the laters were not introduced as being feable next to the men, men didn't told them : no you can't do this or that and must stay in the kitchen.
Ripley even more so, she was an officer, second in command. She did not let Parker taunt her and she told Ash her piece when he went over her orders. She was presented as efficient from the start.
Sarah, an everyday waitress that, when the time came, toughened up. Reese never told her she was weak and could not fight.

Anyway, Naru is OK, the film is entertaining.
She is not as iconic as Sarah and Ripley for me.
I liked her. She made mistakes but proved to be a problem solver. The problem was for some reason I didn’t find her or her brother to be that compelling. I cared more for the safety of the dog tbh.

I wonder if Trachtenberg knew this was going to Hulu ahead of filming? If so, I would've gone full Comanche language mode. It worked for Mel Gibson's great , Apocalypto. Hell, I hope there is some kind of black n white version further down the road. Eh.

I was on holidays for the last 2 weeks so only got round to watching this last night. The original Predator film is one of my all time faves, warts and all, and whilst I don't think this film hits all the highs of that in terms of tension and tone, it definitely comes a close second. It's a vast improvement over the last few Predator films that have been released.

Going back a few hundred years gives the film the freedom to be its own thing and do something a little different. I like the pared back approach; a landscape devoid of any cities or masses of people, no advanced weapons, even the Predator itself is somewhat scaled back technologically compared to its successor which will target Dutch's team a few centuries later.

Now let's have a Samauri vs Predator movie in feudal Japan in the early 1800s shortly before their abolition.

THIS!

Haven’t there always been practical suits for the movies?

Can we get an adult animated Predator series? That would be cool!

My choice: Genndy Tartakovsky after watching Primal S2 so far! Anime would be awesome too, though!

Still really, really want more movies!

Seems someone called him out on his BS and he needs to justify it and its red meat for that base.

Mind boggling that they have countless media that targets them but get in Flux when other demographics get a bone here and there truly bizarre

That mans "career" should have ended when he had this childish Tantrum "Ewww gays kiss" during his Eternals review.

Of course they claim they wouldnt call these women woke, because then it would proof that their only problem is with the fact that a Woman plays a main role and is allowed to be the hero.
And they want to present themself as the rigtheous ones, the "good" guys and not the women hating *******s they really are.

Any critic or YouTuber that makes such a big irrational fuss over something like this is not worth listening to.

Honestly, the only difference between this film and Aliens is that this film is consciously making the choice to do what they were doing with the main female character. Other than that, their functions within their own respective stories pretty much remains the same. There really isn’t any other difference. And, honestly, if it was some kind of “agenda“, in this case, would it really be such a bad thing?

Is it okay to call out when it’s not done as well? Sure. But it’s not like every single instance of this is some affront to traditional, American nationalistic values or whatever.

Some people feel entitled to have everything be "for them", and view anything not "for them" as theft.

.

I prefer the face here compared to what we saw in the film.

Still was a great film with beautiful cinematography and locations, awesome action sequences and kills, performances from Amber, Dane, Dakota, the direction and the score was great!

9/10 with the only issue being the CGI, especially with the animals.

Would anyone want to see a film where the Predator wins? As great as this movie is, another one where the hero slowly figures out how to become invisible to it, and then beats it in the third act will be repetitive, regardless of the time period it’s set in.

That'd be a cool idea. If we ever get a viking or samurai movie, I could see that playing out with a group of warriors taking on the Predator, with most of them getting killed, but maybe a few escaping with their lives to tell their tale of survival, and then an ending showing the Pred taking its "trophies" and flying off-planet.
