Rogue Squadron Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron - Christmas 2023

Thank god! After Rise of Skywalker, Disney desperately needs a course correction and spending a truck load of money on a movie about pilots won’t bring people to the theater at the level that they want. That said, Disney needs to seriously stop hiring directors who have one hit only to later cancel their project because their very next film happens to be garbage.

Between Patty Jenkins, Benioff and Weiss, Colin Trevorrow, Josh Trank and Rian Johnson, LucasFilms surely has a pattern of rushing to sign contracts with people who wind up disappointing some sort of fandom, thus ending up killing those deals.
And then when they do follow through, they end up not liking the product and firing the directors (Lord and Miller)

To be fair, Trevorrow and Trank probably would have been horrible.

They just don’t know where to take the franchise creatively.

Yeah, I’m fully expecting Taika’s Star Wars movie is never happening after the mixed response to Love And Thunder.
Oh, right, probably that one will join the list too. They really know how to pick their talent, don't they?

Rian Johnson is the anomoly in that list, as the one who delivered his SW film with critical acclaim, has a consistent body of work outside of it too, and is seemingly the most hated person in the fandom regardless, lol.

Well, I emphasised in audience reception or at least a vocal part of it, because that's the reason LucasFilms changed their minds about all these filmmakers. And to be fair, Game of Thrones Season 8 was also met with critical acclaim in Metacritic.

Disney probably wishing they had hired Joe Kosinski for this thing

You seriously think Maverick was a success because it was about pilots? You’re telling me it had nothing to do with Cruise, 30+ years of nostalgia, and pretty much one of the few films at the time to release exclusively in theaters?

40% of either Top Gun movie is basically F-18/Super Hornet porn so yeah, the pilot thing has a lot to do with their success. There's other stuff that audiences ate up too but the main draw are the aircraft scenes.

It's kind of nuts that the Star Wars pilot film gets shelved just before Top Gun blows up. Lucasfilm can't catch a break.

The start of Season 8 got good enough reviews, the end did not. TV reviews are often based on the first few episodes.

Hmm honestly a Star Wars pilot film would have been different like Solo and Rogue One. Its too bad this could have been the 3rd movie spin off but it wasn't meant to be.

It's amazing how much gets thrown in the trash. It's like not there's any quality control on what does get released.

I actually did want to see this. I was a fan of the Rogue Squadron/Wraith Squadron books back in the day.

She can be working on it, doesn't necessarily mean its green lit.

I'm conflicted about this. According to the EU before Disney rewrote it, Rogue Squadron was formed by Luke and Wedge after the Battle of Yavin. But to do a full movie about that group now, you'd have to de-age both Mark Hamill and Denis Lawson for the whole thing...which would make the cost completely insane. As many resources as Disney has, I don't think even they could afford it.
