No Time To Die (Bond 25)

The Bond franchise has a massive amount of spin-off potential. How was the 00 series of agents formed? How did Bond make it into the ranks? What adventures did M go on as a younger man in the SAS? etc.

The problem of course is that these risk diluting the appeal of the main 007 films, which are always huge cinematic tentpoles that only come along every few years, thus they remain a big draw.

That's right. The same thing that happened to Star Wars. The movies used to be the big event. Now is just all over the place, it doesn't feel special anymore. Same thing is happening with Marvel Studios. They shot themselves in the foot.
They don't need to explain everything. It's ok if some things remain unknown. It's ok to leave something to the imagination.

In the case of Bond, they should take advantage of all of that you just mentioned and incorporate it into the plotlines of future movies. Some fresh stuff, new ideas, maybe even setting it in the past, whatever. We don't need a freaking Amazon TV spinoff about Q. Is like that show about Batman's butler (??????) Jesus Christ.

I don’t think so because there’s story potential with characters that are unique to Q that Bond just couldn’t do. For example, Q could cover massive data breaches like the sandworm hack and things like crytocurrency scams that just wouldn’t work as well with Bond so there’s an interesting angle there.

the Batman’s butler thing is just silly unless people want to watch a series about folding underwear

Alfred doesn't just fold underwear though. All those times Batman called him wasn't simply to check that he'd have a set of clean underwear but for actual tasks related to his mission. And surely that series "Pennyworth" wasn't about undergarments.

Not that I care to see a series about Q anyway.

Listen, these studios would make a background character a whole series if they could profit off it. Just because you can Marvel-ize every single character, doesn’t mean you should. Less is more. And more often than not an Alfred and a Q are at their best as supporting.

I think I’d actually be fine if they pulled a Live and Let Die/Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace and didn’t include Q for a film or two. Moneypenny too for that matter.

I mean, I can’t blame the studio for trying to make a quick buck off the guy that would watch that kind of crap though…

While I am fine with a younger Bond again, I don't want to sit through more "origin" movies where we need to wait until the third movie to get to characters like Q and Moneypenny. While that worked out fine for Casino Royale, Quantum Of Solace really could have used a good Q or Moneypenny scene because that movie really didn't have much going for it in comparison to CR. I think that is why they brought back Q and Moneypenny for Skyfall and kept them for the rest of the Craig series.

They should just remake the Craig films exactly but with a new actor. It can be Bond caught in a time loop. :o

I think Skyfall’s strangely been something of a Pandora’s box when it came to Moneypenny and Q. Those characters were never really all that vital to the plots of the previous films, but now they’ve been kind of elevated and there’s this aspect (at least in Spectre and No Time to Die) where the MI6 crew have to be deeply involved in the last act missions.

Yeah. For the longest time Moneypenny, Q and M were just "part of the furniture". There because they should be, but nothing beyond that and they definitely weren't "characters". With Dench taking over the role, M began to be elevated, and with Skyfall the same happened with Moneypenny and Q. I've really appreciated this and made the films feel more "whole".

I'm watching Skyfall right now, and Q's about to plug in Silva's laptop, which is going to hack them. It's such a great character moment.

IMO the constant spin-offs stem from the same fundamental problem that reboots and sketchy prequels do, Hollywood is running out of fresh ideas and trying to milk the life out of anything existing which has appeal.

I would say the issue isn't that they are important, but that they probably *shouldn't have been*. Q and Moneypenny were long time supporting cast members throughout the franchise, which is something that matters. . . but neither of them existed at *all* in the reboot prior to Skyfall. They weren't built into the foundation of the rebooted series, and they barely made any sense as major 'new' elements in Skyfall, given Skyfall was very much a "last rodeo" plot otherwise. Its one of the many ways Skyfall does not hold up to scrutiny as a story- it is split between one half "bringing this character arc to a conclusion" and one half "introduce tons of fan service".

Skyfall should have either been "I'm too old for this ****" or "Now we make the series fan-complete", it shouldn't have tried to be both.
