Figured as much.

Don't do it, man.

Reading recaps, I might need to watch this show now. Something something about poisoning people through milk :lmao:

You guys don't get it. You see it was meant to be a parallel to the ending of The Dark Knight Trilogy where Batman prevents this very same thing from happening in Gotham. We now see what happens when the world doesn't have a Batman. :o

I am really looking forward to Deadpool 3, not even gonna front. MCU is finally giving us MORE MUTANTS.
I am too. I just hope they handle Logan well. Mangold ended Hughs run in the most perfect way possible, so I hope this is worth keeping it going. I grew up with Hugh as Wolverine so I obviously am happy we're gonna see him again.

I'm confident they'll be respectful of 'Logan' and give us something satisfying all in one fell swoop. Granted we are in the Multiverse Saga and Disney has access to everyone, but I just really hope this movie is just a way to usher Deadpool into 616 and close the door on the Foxverse.

We need new blood.

Finally got around to watching Black Adam. Imagine my surprise to find out that it’s not a complete and total train wreck after all, which isn’t the same thing as saying it’s a “good” movie of course. I will say, however, that this was one of the stranger CBM viewing experiences I’ve had in quite some time…

As tempting as it is to jump on the bandwagon and dismiss the film outright, clearly a lot of time, effort, and, yes, money went into its creation so it deserves more than just a cursory glance.

First of all the good. Setting the film in a fictional Middle Eastern country and spending pretty much the entire film there is a novel and interesting concept, a refreshing change from large American urban centres where films like this typically take place. And I have to say, accusations of the film not having a thought in its head are (somewhat) unfounded.

The film is a tirade against and rejection of the exploitative, unfavourable, and manipulative aspects of expansionism and colonialism – a heady topic for a mindless, big-budget superhero tentpole. Of course Marvel has been mining similar territory for almost two decades now, but it’s fair to say that Black Adam is the latest in a long list of mainstream entertainments to address the ways that ambition and unhindered capitalism have brought us to where we are now as a culture. After all, dissent comes and goes but capitalism is forever. Alas, the film’s writers and director raise interesting issues that they are incapable of addressing with any clarity or insight, which is sad because the film could have been much more than what it eventually became.

I’ll also say, the Justice Society were awesome! Whenever the narrative switched from the JS back to Black Adam I felt a surge of disappointment. I would gladly have spent an entire film with the team instead of sitting through interminable scenes with the title character. Atom Smasher and Cyclone were sadly given little to do in the film, but Brosnan and Hodge were both fabulous as Doctor Fate and Hawkman, respectively. I want more of this team – Golden Age Flash & Green Lantern, Hourman, Sandman, Spectre, Johnny Thunder, Doctor Mid-Nite, Starman, Mister Terrific, Wildcat – give me a full franchise and I’ll gladly watch the **** out of it!

And now the bad. The film is sadly a mess both ideologically and narratively, and such an assault on the senses that it’s not even funny. Seriously, if you dig films that are deafeningly loud, ridiculously busy, and bursting to the seams with poorly realized VFX, boy have I got a movie for you. Black Adam is full-on sensory overload and onslaught that betrays a lack of confidence in its narrative abilities. Master filmmakers like Christopher Nolan understand that action, spectacle, and CGI should be tools utilized to enhance a narrative, not compensate for the lack of a coherent storyline. At the end of the film my roommate turned to me and asked if I felt as “exhausted” as she did. Sadly I understood exactly what she meant…

And then there was Dwayne.

It’s become a cliché to comment on how limited The Rock is outside of his action buddy cop comedy wheelhouse, but this film makes it painfully clear how wooden he is when he is actually called upon to act. I know literally nothing about Black Adam from the comics, but the character as written for this specific movie is supposed to be conflicted, tortured, self-righteous, even noble in his own confused and misguided way.

Unfortunately, Johnson is incapable of conveying any of this. He doesn’t seem to understand that it takes more to effectively portray a classic anti-hero than to simply grimace and look constipated for over two hours. This role required some nuance and subtlety, and Johnson is about as subtle as a bull in a china shop. And The Rock’s Messiah Complex has never been put on greater display than in this film. Seriously, anyone who takes offense to the constant Christ-like posturing in the Superman movies will have a coronary over Black Adam. We get it Dwayne, this film was supposed to your coronation as the saviour and steward of the DCEU. How did that work out for ya?

Anyway, I agree with the general consensus that Black Adam the character would have been better served as a villain in a Shazam sequel, rather than trying to shoehorn him into a franchise non-starter. Spend about 15 minutes on his origins to establish his inner torment, hire an actor capable of more than just a two-dimensional portrayal, and we might have really had something here. Sadly, as it stands, Black Adam is just the latest in a long and undistinguished line of second-tier CBMs that could easily have been made two decades ago. I’d like to think that the inclusion of the Smashing Pumpkins classic Bullet with Butterfly Wings was knowing and intentional, but I doubt either Dwayne or Jaume Collet-Serra could angle for irony no matter how hard they tried...

I don't think the Foxverse will be completely closed out until after Secret Wars. Between No Way Home and Deadpool 3, having Tobey's Spidey share the screen with Jackman's Wolverine is too tempting to resist.

Like drunk texting your ex on New Year's Eve. :o

Oh absolutely. You know they have crossover plans, we've wanted to see the OG stars interact with each other for years. But again, I just hope after this saga is done they just keep them in their respective corners and give us brand new X-Men specifically.

They need it.

Yeah, that "Feeling nostalgic?" text just doesn't hit the same if it's not from Kevin Feige with a six figure wire transfer to back it up.

I think after the dust settles from Avengers 5 & 6 the only Fox character standing in the MCU will be Deadpool. Back in 2019 when the Fox purchase was finalized and before any of their multiverse plans were revealed I actually thought that Deadpool would've been the only character brought into the MCU.

Has anyone else been seeing this rumor Secret Wars may end up being 2 parts, so that we may be getting Kang Dynasty plus a 2 part Secret Wars for a total of a Kang trilogy? Has this been in any reliable sources other than scoopers? Cause this has shown up on a few of my social media feeds past 2 days

Well well well...

Disney Explores the Sale of More Films and TV Series to Rivals
The Burbank, California-based entertainment giant is seeking to earn more cash from its content library, according to people familiar with the discussions who asked not to be identified as the talks are private. The move would represent a shift in strategy, as Disney has in recent years tried to keep much of its original programming exclusively on its Disney+ and Hulu streaming services.
Disney is under pressure to improve its financial performance and change its streaming strategy. Last year, the company turned in its worst stock market results in decades. After Disney reported a $1.5 billion loss for its online video business in the third quarter, the board fired Chief Executive Officer Bob Chapek, replacing him with Bob Iger, who had previously held that job for 15 years. Among his many challenges, Iger must also cope with a proxy fight by activist Nelson Peltz, who’s seeking a seat on Disney’s board and pushing for better performance.

Deadpool (if they keep it going continuously) is probably the one place where anything can happen after Secret Wars and the multiverse stuff is likely done. I don’t mind if it’s kept to a corner like that and doesn’t affect other films and the general universe.
