I got around to watching it last night and didn't get the big deal. Yeah some cool flying scenes but it all felt so rushed and the editing was weird.

Shhh. The Church of Scientology will hear you.

Eh, I still really enjoyed that film last year and could still see Kosinski making a solid Supes film. But I knew that was off the cards the moment that we knew Gunn was already writing a reboot of his own and was recruited to be the primary creative head of a decade long plan for a new DCU.

I think Gunn will put 110% into a superman film.
Why?

A) a whole lot is riding on it and it's success to the rest of the dcu. Get it wrong and everything else is in jeopardy.

B) fans are skeptical, and rightfully so.
Especially after being promised the moon with the dceu's Superman.
Gunn wants to prove a successful Superman film, both critically and financially, can be made.
He's not gonna give the keys to the Ferrari to anyone else. He's gonna drive it himself.

While Gunn was not even on my short list of directors for Superman, I have faith he's gonna deliver. He's got a ton of passion for the character going back to when he was a kid. Sometimes a directors style may not seem like a good fit at first, but they end up giving you something that feels different than their previous work. Sam Raimi is a great example here. Nobody could have believed he'd go from Evil Dead to Spider-Man. I mean he did make dramas in-between of course, but it's still a big contrast in style. I have faith!

Ugh. It was inevitable, but I'm not interested in a James Gunn-directed Superman. A different director would at least bring their own input...and probably less of the childish humor we know Gunn for. Obviously it's him wanting his imprint on the character- despite previously saying he turned down Superman- but the man's humor is hit and miss for me. Granted, not all of his films are as awful as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and obviously he'll treat Superman with more reverence than the Suicide Squad characters, but still. Not a fan.

I was pretty confident he was ( 50/50 ) but I'm very confident he is now ( 90% )

Gunn all but admitted in the room he was directing it. Obviously they're going to wait till after Guardians Vol. III. They don't want a repeat of what happened to Star Trek Into Darkness being overshadowed by the news of Abrams directing The Force Awakens in January '13.

My boss said he knew definitively when Gunn relayed the story about bonding with his dad over comics as a troubled kid and one of his happiest memories walking into him reading a Superman comic on his own.

That one and, despite how people feel about Man Of Steel, the trailers for it were fantastic and I hope we get something in that same vein as well.

Didn't Gunn turn down the offer to direct Superman in favor of the Suicide Squad? Unless I'm mistaken, I thought Gunn said that he wasn't right for that character.

I'm wondering what changed his mind. Gunn should know better than most people that fans will not be happy if he makes too many unnecessary changes to the character's personality or mythology.
Gunn changed his mind when he was given the keys to the DC universe. I guarantee his take on Superman was the biggest reason he got the job.

Yeah, I don't think Gunn wanted to try and salvage the Henry Cavill version or try to create a new version that fit into someone else's grand plan (but now he's the one coming up with the grand plan, so that changes things).

yeah which is interesting because I always got the feeling Snyder wanted Batman and only took on superman so he could eventually get to Batman. I think this is a better vibe. I’m sure it’ll be very different to Brightburn!

If only they could have gotten Johnathan to write the script.

I never thought of that but I did think Snyder wanted darker versions of the Trinity. I bet Snyder loved Injustice Superman and Batman returns Superman. He wanted an edgy Man of Steel. Batman branding villains and Wonder Woman with a sword cutting of heads.

“It’s a character-building moment”

As much as people love to still clown on Man of Steel and BvS with it rent free in their heads- I love both and have no problem saying that- I'd love to see Gunn deliver a scene of Clark's abilities that comes even close to the first flight scene in Man of Steel.

Also, for the record, folks who still have an issue with Superman snapping Zod's neck, don't tell me you're fine with Batman not saving Ra's in Begins or tackling Harvey, causing his death in The Dark Knight.

You mean since 1980. Fairly sure I had fever dreams where there were Superman movies that had Richard Pryor acting obnoxious and this one blonde guy who wore spandex and could grow his nails. Terrifying to recollect really, thankfully they weren't real. :o :hehe:
