Strange New Worlds Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - General Discussion Thread

Question, why do they have to resemble the original series at all? They've already veered off significantly from the path.

I just don't understand the viewpoint that they have to connect to the original series. Just use this era, characters and do your own thing because newsflash, that's what you've been doing.

It's far too late to say we have to connect to the original series. They've already encountered the Gorn. Kirk's brother is a crewman on the Enterprise now. This isn't the timeline of the original series. It's a conceit they need to let go of.

The dress uniforms are interesting.

What did they do?
I am just talking about the over all character. The way he is portrayed and he is far more emotional than the original version. The aesthetic as well. This actor looks more like a powerlifter than Nimoy's Spock. Nimoy was a lean almost spindly looking character. When you see Ethan walk down a corridor he looks like Superman rather than Spock to me.

I enjoy the series but look at it like the Kelvin timeline at this point. Like a “what if” reboot alternate universe Star Trek more than following in step with the OG despite what they’re trying to sell it as lol

Same. I can't view this as the same timeline as the original series. Similar characters, concepts, and era, but there's no way they can rectify this as an actual story that happened before the original series.

Canon and continuity are overblown. TAS and Lower Decks are also canon. Why does it matter if it doesn't fully line up.

I feel like Trekkies practically invented the fandom obsession with canon, but I've never understood it, personally. Movies and shows made by different people in the same universe are gonna have differences. It doesn't need to be a big thing.

We're all comic book fans... we should have long accepted that canon is a very fluid thing. I don't care if a story doesn't line up flawlessly with another from decades ago... just give me good stories.

There were about 12 Constitution class ships in Starfleet around this time, give or take. They could've easily just used another one and made a show around it. Whole new crew, same era and off we go, clean slate.

Hopefully there will come a time when someone actually has an idea for a new Star Trek set in the future, after all the series. Something that starts in a new era and just explores the galaxy.

*They* make it a big deal that it lines up. They want their cake and eat it too, when it’s just “hey we’re doing our own updated reboot of the 60s storylines and characters.”

If they want it to line up then they'll have to give the women the mini skirts at some point and actually show us some yeomans.

There is a difference between respecting canon and being slaves to canon.

Its not going to fit perfectly with what has been shown already. And that is okay. And trust me, I've gone through this with X-men. Most of the major "continuity errors" people whine about are bull****.

And really, can this screw up canon any more than Enterprise did? Just enjoy it, and don't sweat the small stuff.

And I say this as someone who was desperate to have my favorite Mando mentioned last season, but never happened.

I think Trekkies from the 90s were a little spoiled by continuity at the time. Yes, the TNG era shows and movies were far from perfect when it came to canon and continuity, but due to a lot of continuity of creative teams across shows (eg. The showrunners on DS9 and Voyager were former TNG staff writers), there was an almost MCU-level interconnectedness and continuity to that era of Trek.

Nevertheless, fans of that era have to also remember that there was a lot of *****ing and moaning from TOS era fans about the TNG-era changes. A certain amount of re-imagining is destined to happen when a new creative team revisits a franchise 20-30 years later. Look at the TOS movies, they re-imagined the Klingons, re-designed the uniforms and Enterprise under the excuse of a "refit", introduced a new theme song, etc.

However, I think the problem here is that the Kurtzman-Goldsman team is doing that in an existing time period where people have already played before. We know what the uniforms, etc. are supposed to look like in the 2250s. The creative team is really limiting its own freedom by doing prequels. Prequels in and of themselves almost always create continuity problems. As Sithborg mentioned, we saw this with Enterprise. Like that show, we are getting conflicts and appearances from races and people who are supposed to appear the first time later on. Goldsman making comments like that about making sure things line up with TOS just stokes the flames.

But in any event, I am getting some good Trek right now and that is all that matters deep down. Having SNW and Lower Decks at the same time is such a breath of fresh air from the Discovery/Picard era or the dark ages of the franchise being dead on TV for almost 15 years.

If you are in the US and want to see what the deal with Season One is, it looks like it was uploaded to the Paramount+ youtube channel. Probably up there till seaons 2 premieres.

That's pretty cool they put up the whole season. Here is a link to the playlist.

Paramount has been fairly smart about using youtube to get people to try their series. The premiere will also likely be free for a while.

This is the first time they've done a whole season, though.

I think if I was asking for the show to be a slave to canon, my reactions would be a lot different and closer to the fans crying bloody murder when The Next Generation came on.
