Any untouchable characters?

Maybe but no one else will ever play Scarlett O'Hara, Rick Blaine, Michael Corleone or Indiana Jones again so....Huzzah? Huzzah, it is.

No, more like Huzz...nah.

I notice that you listed a top 5 'untouchable' characters in your initial list, and have omitted one of those characters in this particular rebuttal, that of Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver.
Could that be because there was talk a year or two ago of Scorsese producing a remake of Taxi Driver, and you didn't want anything upsetting your 'watertight' argument there, as one of the creators of one of those 'untouchable' characters actually considered remaking that film with a new actor?
Can I read your mind?

I agree with the roles that has been mentioned but I will not say it again as it does not need to repeat again.

Anyway, Holly Golightly belongs in this tread (and rightfully so). It's Audrey Hepburn's most famous role and one of the most iconic roles in the history of cinema.

However as the film was based on a novella, it's possible that another adaption will come in time but I don't care if someone else plays the role in the future since I know for sure that it won't hold a candle to Hepburn's portrayal.

Win.

How come no one has mentioned Tyler Durden yet?

I would take forever to list all movie characters that shouldn't be redone. I just focused on franchise characters mostly. Tyler Durden is on my list though.

also some more:

Keyser Soze
Leon (The Professional)
Beetlejuice
Jack Sparrow

Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara

I don't ever want to see anyone else in the role she beat out thousands for. Nor do I acknowledge the "sequel"

Actually, no. I just forgot to mention him with the number of characters I was talking about. The reason Scorsese never seriously considered the remake or did it was....because he could not touch the original and he knew that. One day it may be remade (though I doubt it) and when that happens people will just laugh at whoever is trying to out-DeNiro DeNiro in his signature role.

Can you imagine Leonardo DiCaprio playing Travis? I think not.

Great character/performance and well said.

Frank Debrin and Ace Ventura cant be touched. It just wouldn't really work imo.

John McLane.
Like Skywalker
Han Solo

Everyone else could totally get rebooted and I wouldn't mind...as long as it's done correctly.

Any character can be ultimately re-cast. It's all just a matter of circumstance.

Characters defined by their actors (Indy, John McClane, etc.) are hard, but there's no reason why they can't be recast. It's really more a question of whether or not the fans will accept the recast.

An Indy movie without Harrison Ford would be a hard sell for me.

I agree. Prior to 2009 I would have considered the original Star Trek crew to be in the untouchable category(especially Kirk, Spock & McCoy). But we know how that went.

The story could be told differently with another actor, they don't have to out De Niro De Niro, as you put it. Same with the other roles, you never know who might do well.

edit: and aye, you can't blame me for trying out the old mind reading there, i thought I'd give it a go. But, my point was, the creator of the film considered it, so someone else of quality artistic stock may consider remaking some of those others you sugested were untouchable.

and no, you are right, I don't know why you picked him out of a hat, and I have said this before in a thread about him, but one thing Leo De Cap is not, is funny, and that is one of the main draws of the character in TD. I guess that is one of the reasons why Mary Harron fought against the studios who wanted him for American Psycho(apart from personal integrity and artistic choice of course), insisting Bale play the role.

The "remake" of Taxi Driver was a version of The Five Obstructions which is basically an experiment in cinema. A famous director takes one of his famous scenes and "remakes" it with obstacles tossed his way by Lars von Trier.

For instance, how would the same basic scene play out if Travis took Betsy to a film that wasn't a porn film. Or if Scorsese played the scene in the cab without using the N-word. Basically, see if limitations can inspire a filmmaker.

Geez, man show some respect. Don't blame the person, blame the media.

Sam Spade. I know Ricardo Cortez and Warren William played him before Bogart and George Segal played him after, but only one portrayal really proves memorable. Same with Philip Marlowe.

No matter how good Fairuza Balk is in Return to Oz, there is really only one Dorothy Gale, and her name is Garland.

Mulder and Scully.

Nick and Nora Charles.
