While Jurassic World is still a few months away, that film’s breakout director Colin Trevorrow is already working on his next project, a sci-fi thriller called Intelligent Life, which he’ll make with some of the same team who brought back that popular dinosaur franchise.
With roots in an earlier project Trevorrow co-wrote with his regular collaborator Derek Connolly, DreamWorks Pictures has picked up the project according to The Hollywood Reporter, their first acquisition following the arrival of the company’s new CEO, Michael Wright. Jurassic World producer Frank Marshall has been retained to produce the film along with Trevorrow and Big Beach, who produced Trevorrow and Connolly’s indie hit Safety Not Guaranteed.
Plot details are being kept secret other than the fact that it’s a re-conceived version of The Ambassador, an earlier project Trevorrow and Connolly had been shopping about a UN worker hired to represent humankind for the chance of alien contact who ends up falling in love with an alien.

Haha, that should be awesome if played straight.

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o is in negotiations to star in Intelligent Life, a sci-fi thriller from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment that has Ava DuVernay circling to direct.

The project already has some bold names on the creative side. Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow and his collaborator Derek Connolly wrote the script. Frank Marshall is producing with Trevorrow as well as production banner Big Beach.

Nyong’o is in negotiations, while DuVernay is expected to receive an offer to direct in the next 24 hours. The director, who helmed the Martin Luther King biopic Selma, is also fielding an offer from Disney to adapt A Wrinkle in Time, the children book classic by Madelein L'Engle. There is no conflict between the two projects so the director could end up doing both.

Intelligent Life is a reworking of an earlier Trevorrow-Connolly project titled The Ambassador about a U.N. worker in a department that was created to represent humankind in the event of alien contact. The man falls in love with a mysterious woman who turns out to be an alien. The tone is said to be similar to Trevorrow’s Safety Not Guaranteed and takes The Ambassador to a larger scale story.

Nyong’o will play the woman at the center of the alien contact.

A summer start is being targeted.

Nyong’o won an Oscar for her breakout performance in 12 years a Slave, a movie that was also her big-screen debut. She recently appeared as alien Maz Kanata in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and is part of the all-star voice cast of Disney’s The Jungle Book, which opens April 15. She also stars in Disney’s chess drama Queen of Katwe with David Oyelowo.

Nyong’o is repped by CAA, D2 Management and Del Shaw. DuVernay is repped by CAA and Del Shaw.

Awesome and i do love original sci-fi films. :awesome:

Although the premise is giving me a Villeneuve/Adams 'Story of Your Life' vibe without the falling in love with the alien part. :funny:

Ava DuVernay and Lupita Nyong’o may team for the Amblin sci-fi feature Intelligent Life

Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) may be gearing up to team with Selma director Ava DuVernay. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that both are in talks to join the Amblin Entertainment science fiction feature Intelligent Life. First announced last year, Intelligent Life boasts a screenplay by the Jurassic World pair of Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly.

Intelligent Life has roots in an earlier project, The Ambassador. Although no plot specifics for Intelligent Life have yet been revealed, The Ambassador was set to follow a UN worker hired to represent humankind for the chance of alien contact who ends up falling in love with an alien.
Frank Marshall will produce Intelligent Life alongside Trevorrow and Big Beach Films, who produced Trevorrow and Connolly’s indie hit Safety Not Guaranteed.
It is also reported that DuVernay is being sought to helm Walt Disney Pictures‘ upcoming big screen take on Madeleine L’Engle’s 1962 sci-fi fantasy novel A Wrinkle in Time. In development at the studio for some time, the most recent update (back in 2014) saw Frozen scribe Jennifer Lee coming aboard to provide the adapted screenplay.
Nyong’o is set to next lend her voice to Disney’s The Jungle Book. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film hits the big screen April 15. DuVernay, meanwhile, is helming the pilot episode of Queen Sugar, a new drama set to premiere on OWN later this year.
Production on Intelligent Life is looking to begin this summer and it is noted that the planned shooting schedule will not conflict with A Wrinkle in Time, should DuVernay sign on for both projects. As always, check back for updates as they become available.

As a sci fi loving black lady, this is just cool freaking news.

This is a win win for Ava, especially if Disney is wiling to wait for her with their 'Wrinkle in Time' one of my favorite books of all time.

Ava's out.

Ava DuVernay exits DreamWorks' 'Intelligent Life' http://thr.cm/UuRGfw

Selma helmer Ava DuVernay has exited Intelligent Life, the sci-fi DreamWorks project that has Lupita Nyong'o attached to star.
Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow and his collaborator Derek Connolly wrote the script, which centers on a United Nation employee that monitors outer space who makes contact with a beautiful woman, who may be an alien.
DuVernay joined the project in February but has left over scheduling conflicts, according to sources. Nyong'o remains attached to star.

Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment is producing the project along with Frank Marshall, Trevorrow and the production banner Big Beach.
DuVernay is currently working on OWN’s series Queen Sugar, which stars Rutina Wesley. She's also attached to Disney's adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, the children's book classic by Madeleine L'Engle.

Filmmaker Rebecca Thomas (“Electrick Children,” “Stranger Things”) has been hired to direct the sci-fi film “Intelligent Life” for Amblin Entertainment.
Ava DuVernay (“Selma”) was originally attached to direct with Lupita Nyong’o to star but both left the project due to other commitments.
The story centers on a United Nations employee who monitors outer space and makes contact with a beautiful woman who may be an alien.
Thomas will do some additional writing on “Jurassic World” scribes Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly’s original script and a subsequent draft by Jay Roach.
Frank Marshall, Peter Saraf and Trevorrow will produce. Thomas recently signed onto helm another sci-fi project, “Malignant,” at 20th Century Fox.
