Capcom will release a downloadable demo for Monster Hunter Generations for 3DS via the Nintendo eShop on June 30, the company announced at E3.

Select fans will begin to receive early access codes via e-mail beginning today. Otherwise, if you don’t want to wait, early access to the demo is available now in the Humble Bundle’s E3 2016 Digital Ticket.

The demo features three monsters of varying difficulty levels, as well as both local and online multiplayer for up to four players. Players can start with the Great Maccao, then attempt to face the new owl-like monster Malfestio, before testing their skills against the fan-favorite Nargacuga.
Capcom also released a new trailer for the game introducing “Deviant” monsters. As Capcom describes them, “these are monsters that have survived previous hunter encounters, mutating and evolving into the greatest threats yet with new fearsome looks, unpredictable behaviors and unexpected abilities. These challengers, such as the Dreadking Rathalos and the Thunderlord Zinogre, yield parts to craft incredibly powerful and unique gear; which become worthy rewards for the most skilled hunters.”

Monster Hunter Generations is due out for 3DS in North America and Europe on July 15.

Monster Hunter Generations Devs On Keeping Things Fresh And Bringing It To The West. June 29, 2016 . 2:30am

Series executive producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and producer Shintaro Kojima shared their thoughts on
adding new featuring while keeping its MonHun feel, and about not aiming for an annual release.

14 comments Read >

During a recent interview with VentureBeat, series executive producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and producer Shintaro Kojima shared their thoughts on adding new featuring while keeping its MonHun feel, and about not aiming for an annual release.

Here are some highlights from the interview:

With Generations, you brought in a lot of old elements and old monsters and mixing them with new things. What were some of your development goals? What were you hoping to accomplish?
Ryozo Tsujimoto: It’s been more than 10 years since the series started in 2004. We wanted to celebrate the series’ history, now that we’ve passed that anniversary. We wanted this to have a festival feeling, a special event. That’s why we introduced some classic environments and monsters that veterans will pick up on, something to give it a nostalgic feel. But we’re also adding completely new monsters and areas at the same time.

We’ve also found that over the 10-plus years of series history, we’ve seen a lot of play styles out there from different hunters. Everyone has their own preference and we wanted the gameplay to reflect that in its mechanics, so everyone could play in a specialized way that suits them. That’s why we introduced new gameplay elements like hunter styles and hunter arts. That requires you to drill down into not just choosing one of the 14 weapons, but choosing one of the four styles as well. You can really say, “This is what suits me as a hunter.” You can show off your uniqueness.

What’s one thing that you would like to see in future Monster Hunter games, something you tried to do in the past but maybe couldn’t fit in?
Tsujimoto: We’ve been able to put just about everything we want into each project as we’ve gone along through the years. To be honest, even if there was something on the back burner that was coming up for a future title, I wouldn’t tell you. [Laughs]

Shintaro Kojima: I worked specifically on Monster Hunter Generations, and I’m really pleased that I was able to get all of my ideas into the game.

That was something I had wondered about as well, but you really nailed the feeling of making these moves look awesome without dumbing-down the game. What did you do on the development side to find that balance between bringing in these great-looking new moves and having them fit in the Monster Hunter universe?
Tsujimoto: We spent a lot of time on getting that balance right. As we mentioned, if you get the impression that they’re just big and flashy and they’re not Monster Hunter—just to reassure people, this is absolutely Monster Hunter gameplay. You can’t just go up and hit a move and it’ll blow a monster away. It’s still a game of reading the monster reactions, finding the right timing, dodging at the right time. It isn’t just a hack-and-slash game. You feel really cool, but it’s still up to you to be skillful. The game isn’t doing it for you.

We want to bring out a new kind of accent, a new kind of approach, while keeping true to the series. Capcom has done that before with games like Street Fighter. That’s a very long-running series, and after a certain amount of time you want to bring the action to a different level. You want to add more cool visual effects, or even totally change the visual style like in Street Fighter Alpha. But we’re always careful to make sure that when we reinvent a series, we don’t reduce it. We always stay true to the series’ core.

With Generations, we’ve seen two years in a row now that the U. S. has been lucky enough to get a Monster Hunter game. Is one of your goals going forward to make this an annual series?
Tsujimoto: Even in Japan, we’re not dogmatic about whether this is an annual franchise. We don’t have to release one every year. With the number of games that have come out in Japan, it may have wound up being annual, more or less, but it isn’t because we decided to make that a deadline.

Talking about the west, as you say, this is the first time we’ve had two years in a row with a new Monster Hunter game, which is great for our fans. We’ve seen a lot of feedback from players about the amount of time it takes us to bring a new game over from Japan. Localization has to be done. We’ve tried to refine that process and make it more efficient, so that we’ve been able to make that gap shorter and shorter. This is the shortest wait we’ve had so far. It’s still a matter of months, but in the past some titles have taken up to a year. We’re getting closer and closer to the Japanese release time frame.

In the future, I’d love to be able to reduce that wait even further and get Monster Hunter out simultaneously in the U. S. and Japan. We’ll keep doing our best to bring our games to western players as fast as possible. We appreciate everyone’s patience.

Monster Hunter Generations’ Palicoes Look Good As The Legend Of Zelda’s Link . July 5, 2016 . 8:45am

Monster Hunter Generations players will be able to acquire free DLC that makes Palicoes look like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker’s version of Link.

[YT]2Q8rwhsH9r8[/YT]
Monster Hunter Generations’ Palicoes are certainly sharp dressed cats. They’re getting a number of cross-over costumes in the latest game, and the latest one links them to a popular hero. Palicoes will be able to dress as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker’s Link.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker outfit and weapon will be free DLC for Monster Hunter Generations. The Palico wearing it will have a mask and outfit to wear, as well as a Wind Waker Baton to wield. The Master Sword and shield are purely decorative, appearing on the character’s back.

This isn’t the first time The Legend of Zelda appeared in Monster Hunter. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate offered Hero’s Armor and Hero’s Sword, Master Sword, Hero’s Bow, and Sacred Bow weapons inspired by the series, as well as a themed Guild Card background. This is the first time a Palico has received a costume inspired by the series.

Monster Hunter Generations will come to the Nintendo 3DS in North America and Europe on July 15, 2016.

Monster Hunter Generations Producer On Adding Prowler Mode And Deviant Monsters. July 22, 2016 . 1:30pm

Siliconera spoke with Monster Hunter Generations producer Shintaro Kojima about making Prowler mode, endgame content, and Japan’s Monster Hunter Festa events.

14 comments Read >
Monster Hunter Generations takes Capcom’s hunting series and changes the core combat to make it more fast paced. All fourteen weapons from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate are in the game along with the new Prowler mode where you can play as a Felyne. Siliconera spoke with Monster Hunter Generations producer Shintaro Kojima about making Prowler mode and endgame content.

The west got Monster Hunter 4G in the form of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, so players are used to having an extensive G-Rank for endgame play. Monster Hunter Generations doesn’t have a G-Rank, so what kinds of difficult endgame content can advanced players look forward to?

Shintaro Kojima, Producer: There are new challenges like Deviant Monsters and Hyper Monsters. These are challenging and are different from what players may expect of these monsters, so both advanced and new players can look forward to fighting them.

In regards to StreetPass, instead of Guild Quests and Expeditions, Monster Hunter Generations has a ticket system for new Deviant Monsters. How are these variant monster quests different from Guild Quests and Expeditions?

Deviant Monsters are tremendous threats to face, so much so that they have earned special names. The level of these monsters will rise as you complete the quest. At a certain level, players are asked to play within a special rule. Though the Deviant Monsters will really test a hunter’s abilities, the gear that can be crafted from their materials is extremely powerful. I hope fans will try their best to earn these!

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was one of the first Monster Hunter titles to have a strong main story. Can players expect the Elite 4 (Gammoth, Astalos, Glavenus, and Mizutsune) to tie into a greater story, or does story not play a big role in Monster Hunter Generations? Why?

The story in Generations is different from the one players experienced in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. In Monster Hunter Generations, throughout the journey players will meet many unique people from the game’s four different villages that will ask for your help. Completing quests to aid the greater world of Monster Hunter Generations will earn you rewards that can help your hunting life.

The Sword and Shield now have the option to use oils, granting the user certain buffs for a set period of time. These buffs are similar to existing armor abilities. Why did you give the Sword and Shield this new mechanic?

Every weapon type has been well-balanced throughout the series and that is of course the case with Monster Hunter Generations as well. The Oils for the Sword and Shield is the feature we added to balance that weapon for this game.

People joke that the new weapon is the Felyne (Prowler Mode). Did you approach Prowler Mode the same way you approach adding a new weapon? If not, how did you approach it differently?

Prowler Mode was actually not in the original design plan. It was added during mid-production in order to help players who like the series but may be having difficulty with the action part of the game. We wanted this to be more than a mini game so, yes, like you say, Prowlers basically became playable just like a new weapon type. The gameplay feels very unique and different in this mode so I hope players will try this out for themselves.

The hunters have big arch enemies like Gore Magala, Dah’ren Mohran, and so on in the main game – but what about the Felynes?

Although Prowlers can be thought of as more of a support character, they can take on any quests that a hunter can, so Prowlers and hunters alike share common foes throughout the game.

What was the most popular weapon and hunting style in the Monster Hunter Festa competition held in Fukuoka this year? Why do you think that is?

Weapons, Hunting Styles and the combination that people chose differed based on the quest they were taking on, so I don’t think there were a particular style or weapon combination that was used more than another at Festa. People tend to discover their favorite combinations based on personal efficiency.

Also, in regards to Monster Hunter Festa national competition, the winners were a mother and her son. I think that that’s great. I was really surprised by the diversity of people who play Monster Hunter in Japan. I even talked to a lot of female players who brought their boyfriends to Monster Hunter Festa. Why do you think Monster Hunter attracts this broad audience in Japan and how do you plan to capture the same audience in the west?

It has been 12 years since Monster Hunter was first released to Japanese audiences, and since then, a large variety of people have been playing the game in many ways such as at official events like Monster Hunter Festa, at local community events and even online. I know that the western community is getting bigger and bigger and I would like to be a part of that community by joining some of the events when I am able. I am looking forward to seeing and meeting many fans in the west.

Capcom released their consolidated results for the 6 months ended September 30, 2016 with new sales data showing that Monster Hunter Generations has surpassed 4.1 million in global sales.

Previously, the total worldwide sales for Monster Hunter Generations was at 3.3 million but with the added 800,000 it surpassed 4.1 million, putting it on par with Monster Hunter 4, which currently sits at the same figure for its total lifetime sales. Capcom also noted that Monster Hunter Generations achieved solid sales in the West.

Back in May, Capcom announced their plans for three major titles, with expectations for the first major title to sell around the 4 million unit-range, a second major title at the 2 million unit-range, and a new Monster Hunter title to sell around 2 million units as well.

New information from a Japanese press release has revealed the first title (4 million) as Resident Evil 7, the second title (2 million) as Dead Rising 4, and the new Monster Hunter game expected to sell in the 2 million unit-range as the recently announced Monster Hunter XX.

Monster Hunter Generations is currently available for Nintendo 3DS. Monster Hunter XX releases in Japan on March 18, 2017 for 3DS.
