wow the number of tweets is insane. i thought it was maybe around 10. but no.

This would make a great Black Mirror episode. It says here 10 years ago, you made ethnic joke.

It's odd that all of these jokes predate him getting the GOTG franchise but are only now getting him fired. That's just poor due diligence by Disney/Marvel to not know he had these things in his past.
I was always a little surprised he was even hired in the first place just based on the small amount of work I had seen of him. And then you see the type of jokes that are said in his GOTG films. It was interesting to see how much it was embraced among parents allowing their kids to see it.

I assume he was hired at a time that making sure people's social media accounts didn't have anything that could create negative publicity was such a big thing. And given the age of those tweets and how much he uses twitter, he probably didn't remember any of them.

That's an interesting part about this considering the often mean-spirited dialogue in the GotG movies and certain jokes (Jackson Pollock painting, etc) - people were fine with crass and tasteless then, so they should've assumed he said pretty tasteless things in general.

Like everything else though I guess edginess and shock value have a natural limit.

I've read a lot of people saying it shouldn't be such a big deal because he tweeted them 10 years ago. A whole lot of them were about rape and pedophilia....do you think someone who was raped as a child is saying "It's ok he made fun of raping kids....because it was done 10 years ago."

I learned about his parody hot list of comic book characters, and that got me looking at him funny. It was after GotG that I saw it I believe. But I do thing there is a world of difference between being crass and tasteless and what these tweets show. Especially when you work for Disney.

No way to know. A lot of victims of X are okay with jokes about X.

And he was like 40. I've seen a good amount of "he was young" defenses of Twitter too

Yeah, I definitely agree we're not talking apples and apples here - but I don't think it should be too surprising.

I've always thought Rocket as a character is a terrible representation to have in a movie ostensibly made for kids, most of his dialogue is only funny because it's coming from a talking raccoon, but it's still quite bizarre and tasteless in some senses. Like laughing at a guy with a prosthetic leg and wanting to steal it would be funny in a movie aimed at older audiences. But I thought it was a little weird that the 'wholesome family-friendly' Disney would green light stuff like that, and clearly Gunn is behind a lot of that sort of humor.

GotG is just the toned down, PG13-filtered version of his humor.

40 is the new 20. As a 40 year old I can attest.

In my experience a lot of victims (and I mean personally) of X are okay with jokes about Y. Most people affected by something serious don't find jokes at that things expense funny, but will laugh at things about other serious matters they haven't been touched by.

It's human nature, you care about the stuff that's relevant to you often times.

Yeah I can agree with that. I've just experienced some cases where being bothered about those jokes is seen as a weakness, of that particular event still holding you down later in life. Everyone approaches it differently, there is no right or wrong there.

Oh for sure - I agree with that completely. But, I think a non-zero number of people who claim they're fine with personal issue X being joked about say/'believe' that as a way to make people think they're not weak or not bothered.

IMO, anyone touched by something serious like suicide, cancer, disability, disease, etc will almost never find jokes about it legitimately funny - but they might laugh it off to seem not as affected by it.

Anyone thinking Disney didn't know about these tweets when they hired him, are off their head.

It's Disney trying to save their own asses.

Now I don't really care about James Gunn, or Guardians of the Galaxy, but when we're reaching a situation where you can get fired for jokes you made ten years ago, that you've apologized for, that your employers knew about back then... I just don't like that.

I mean I'm pretty sure he didnt apologize for the jokes. And 10 years isn't that much of a time of an excuse for a grown man to be a weirdo. I'm really weirded out how people don't get that just because something is in the past doesn't mean it can't come to bite you in the present

Although I do agree Disney probably knew and they're just covering themselves

Here's a comment from birthmoviesdeath that sums it up for me:
"James Gunn made off-color jokes a decade ago" is the least surprising thing in the world. That it was only brought up now by the likes of Mike "Pizzagate" ****in' Cernovich - someone whose words have been demonstrably harmful - shows that this was a calculated, cynical takedown. I realize Disney's position is difficult, but it still pisses me off.

Don't throw stones if you live in a glass house

EDIT: My point is that when you're a public figure someone will always be looking to take you down for whatever reason. However it's not their fault that you give them ammo to do said takedown
