Detective Pikachu

That final twist (I loved it) makes the movie very self contained :thf: Which is surprising since there's already a direct sequel in the works :hmm

I didn't think it would crack the $500 million mark, but it looks like I could be proven wrong.

It'll get a sequel either way at this point. But if it cracks $500m, I can't imagine that wouldn't be considered a success.

Oh well I suppose the real money is in merchandising. It shouldn’t have gone up against endgame.

That said though the first iron man movie only made like, five hundred million. It takes a while to build up a brand to get it to the regular billion dollar field. Plus video game movies don’t have the best reputation

In hindsight it's really funny how everyone (including me, to be honest) was so sure this movie would make "all the money". Some people were even claiming that a billion was pretty much guaranteed. :hehe:

Yeah as I said I fully thought this would make a billion.
The marketing was pretty good, everyone loved the trailer, and the movie itself was pretty good.

I've been comparing these 3 movies a lot, but I think the main problem with Detective Pikachu was a similar problem with Shazam and Bumblebee. There is no x factor for them.

I'm not saying any of those 3 are bad. Not at all. I liked all 3 of them to varying degrees and I think generally they are well made movies. But there was nothing about them that has/had me posting about them on social media or going up to friends and coworkers and saying: "Dude you gotta go see this." or talking about great scenes. And maybe that's just anecdotal but I can kinda see if because all of those movies the conversations about them kinda died after like a week or two. They needed some great scene or scenes to have people talking. Like a great set piece or some really funny comedy bits.

Bringing this back to Detective Pikachu, I think other than Reynolds as Pikachu there is nothing great enough in this movie to really make an impact. Again I liked the movie, not trying to trash it.

Nowadays blockbusters are competing so much for people's attention that you need to stand out more from the pack even if the movie is quality.

At least that's my 2 cents

I also think the 3 movies I mentioned above didn't have the greatest release dates

I mean that was basically the main hook for them. And from what I can tell he was heavily involved in the marketing, even his wife was featured :funny:

That was back in 2008, when not a lot of films got 3d/IMAX releases, China's box office numbers weren't that big and international markets were much smaller, and of course tickets ten to eleven years ago were much cheaper.

It's the first live action Pokemon movie. I genuinely thought that alone would be enough to put butts - lots of butts - into seats. Apparently not.

Very true. But it wasn't a live action adaptation of the Pokemon how we know and love them. It wasn't a movie of someone, Ash or otherwise, going around collecting Pokemon. Honestly, Detective Pikachu seems like it would be the 2nd movie, 1st anthology movie of a Pokemon shared universe rather than a first movie in a Pokemon series

I agree with you I thought that'd be enough.

think the sequel is going to be cancelled now?
No, not yet, at least not when it got more than double its production budget in three weeks.

Maybe if it doesn't hit $400 million by the mid of its second month it may be cancelled. Marketing alone was probably some financial nightmare.
