As "Crisis on Infinite Earths" looms on the horizon, The CW has debuted the first official photo of Smallville star Tom Welling's Clark Kent from the upcoming Arrowverse crossover.

The photo, which comes from the Batwoman episode of the crossover ("Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Two"), features Welling sporting a flannel shirt and work gloves while clutching a small hatchet, presumably working on the Kent farm.

Man I hope he does more than wear flannel and hold a hatchet.

I thought he was wearing washing up gloves. Maybe he was doing the dishes.

Erica Durance on the 'bizarre' Smallville reunion in 'Crisis on Infinite Earths'

In the early stages of planning “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” there was an idea that the crossover could be about more than just the Arrowverse.

“One of the things that we said very, very early on in the pitches to the studio and the network is that this can’t be ‘Crisis on CW Earths,’” crossover executive producer Marc Guggenheim tells EW of the forthcoming adaptation of Marv Wolfman and George Pérez’s comic book event series. “This has to be ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths,’ and we have to touch as many strands of the DC tapestry as possible.”

That edict, combined with the notion that the entire multiverse is at stake in the crossover, ended up giving DC fans something they’ve been dreaming of since the inception of the Arrowverse: the integration of Smallville.

Next month, Smallville actors Tom Welling and Erica Durance will reprise their roles as Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the Batwoman installment of the five-hour crossover, which also spans Arrow, The Flash,Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. Their return to the Kent farm — seen in the exclusive photo above — will reveal what the iconic duo have been up to since Smallville ended in 2011.

“It’s a little bit of a look into their future and the different choices they’ve made to be together,” Durance tells EW. “It’s a full-circle moment that’s really nice.”

Durance isn’t a stranger the Arrowverse, seeing as how she plays Supergirl’s (Melissa Benoist) mom, Alura (and will also portray her in the Supergirl hour, which kicks off the crossover). But she was still surprised when the producers reached out about stepping back into Lois’ shoes so many years after the show went off the air.

“My first thought was like, ‘Really? How are you going to manage this?’” says Durance. “But the writers are just spectacular about how they can pull all the different shows together and all of these different characters, and they make sense of all the timelines. So I was at first very, very curious to see what it would be, and getting to actually go out and do it, I of course was very excited to go back and get to play Lois again.”

Her first day back on Smallville’s Kent Farm set with Welling was weird, but in a good way. “It was bizarre [because] it felt like we hadn’t missed a beat,” Durance says. “It was just easy. It was like coming back in and working with family. It was a little bit bizarre because we went back on somebody’s else show, but we’re in a set that we’re familiar with, the farm and all those things. So it was very, very cool.”

As a Smallville fan, Guggenheim was delighted seeing them on screen again. “Every turn, every nuance, every little choice is just so perfect,” he says. “The beautiful thing is that this material was written by [Batwoman showrunner] Caroline Dries and [writers] Don Whitehead and Holly [Henderson], who had all worked on Smallville. Having been writers on Smallville, I stepped aside and let them speak to where things were headed. As a fan of the show, it answered a lot of questions that I had. It provided a lot of closure, I think, in a really nice way.”

Even though the story was crafted by Smallville vets, Guggenheim did share a scene with Smallville co-creator Alfred Gough before filming began. Says Guggenheim: “I wouldn’t say he blessed it, necessarily, but he described it as something fun.”

“Crisis on Infinite Earths” kicks off with Supergirl on Sunday, Dec. 8, followed by Batwoman on Monday, Dec. 9, and The Flash on Tuesday, Dec. 10. After the winter hiatus, the crossover will resume Tuesday, Jan. 14, with Arrow at 8 p.m., and conclude with Legends of Tomorrow at 9 p.m.[/QUOTE[

I know it's only a small scene but it's really very cool that Guggenheim. Berlanti, et al. think that highly of Smallville and how it basically allowed the Arrow-verse to come into existence, that they're throwing all of us "older" DCTV fans a bone like this.

I honestly stopped watching Flash/Arrow a couple years ago but have been at least trying to watch Flash this season in preparation for the event.

Seeing Tom with gloves and an axe, i just hope he isn't powerless and this is just a click and bait kind of thing.

I praise well Smallville in my memories and i truly hope they don't ruin this.

I'm keeping my expectations low for his appearance.

Since I have no desire to constantly bring up this topic in the general Crisis thread, I'll mention this here again...

I'm honestly worried that they're planning on not only killing Tom's Clark but erasing Smallville's canon from existence from this event. Honestly, for better or for worse, I was happy with the final shot of Tom that we got as Clark Kent as he ripped his shirt open to reveal the superman suit underneath in the series finale. So the idea that Tom's FINAL scene as Clark Kent will be him getting erased from existence is just very troubling for me as a fan of this show.

Not only does it go against the established canon that Earth is fine and well a century after Clark's heroics (via the Legion of Superheroes) but it spits in the faces of every Smallvile fan who invested a decade of their precious time into show so that they could see Clark Kent mature into the Man of Steel. Now you're telling me there's a chance that all of this would have been for nothing? That one scene can erase all of that?

Smallville ended so long ago, I mentally and emotionally separated myself from it. So whatever occurs during crisis won't affect me too much.

and then this

See, I call that bull. If they really considered the comics canon then they wouldn't have decided to erase SV from existence since it was established that Clark and company had already fended off against their own crisis as well.

Smallville ended so long ago, I mentally and emotionally separated myself from it. So whatever occurs during crisis won't affect me too much.

I wish that I could take on that mentality. I'm not sure if I'm ready to accept the idea that a huge part of my childhood is about to erased from existence in a few weeks from now.

Reading a lot of the reactions on twitter from fans who are excited to see Tom and Erica again in their roles. It's going to be a very ugly sight to behold when they end up witnessing their beloved SV destroyed in one scene.

As I've said before I'm pretty confident that's not what's going to happen given that A) Guggenheim/Berlanti basically credit Smallville as being the progenitor of the whole Arrowverse, and B) I'm pretty sure Welling/Durance wouldnt sign on for cameos that would wipe out their character's existences. Those two are regulars on the Con circuit and aren't going to infuriate their fanbase by wiping out 10 years of history on the show.

This is likely just trolling from the same dolts who were ragging on Smallville here during its 10 year run.

Well for me, I'll say, SV's Clark Kent is powerless, somehow exposed to golden kryptonite and basically, he can't help. "Whatever happenned to the man of tomorrow" sort of thing.

Gloves and axe when you have heat vision and super-strengh?

Man, this is going to be such a disappointment...

So uh

SV Clark is confronted by Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) and when he wont reveal his identity to him, Luthor takes out green kryptonite and it has no effect on Clark. Luthor is in disbelief. Basically demeans him for choosing to be "mediocre" and then leaves. Lois then shows up and asks Clark if there was someone there or if he was "talking to the cats again."

Apparently SV Clark gave up his powers voluntarily to have children with Lois. Two girls are mentioned in the scene between Tom and Erica.

Honestly it was cool to see them and I'm glad they took part in this and the SV Earth wasnt wiped away in the Crisis but Clark giving up his powers and not continuing as Superman really contradicts the canon of Smallville where Clark was known as being Superman well into the future by the Legion and others he interacted with from the future.

I's assuming he wont show up again and this wont be resolved later in the crossover? Unless he's going to pull a Superman 2 move and get his powers back.

If SV Earth isn't destroyed, then Clark Kent cam make another guest appearance in some CW show down the line, that is if Tom Welling is ready to do that again.

More than anything, it was a disapointment. The actors did what they could but the more i see the scenes, the less I like them.

SV Clark gives up his powers when SV Lex is the president? Really? Lois is ok with it? what happened to the never-ending battle?

Three people show up, talking about the Multiverse is in danger, a guy claimming to be Lex shows up and tries to kill him with Kryptonite clearly knowing who Clark is, disappears with teleportation and Clark doesn't do anything?

Not even a phone call to SV Justice league?

Not even a bit curious? Normal day as usual?

Let's just see what the kids are doing...

Talking about ruining 10 years of a character development...
