DC Animation ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’: Animated Series From Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves Greenlit

It’s way too early to be thinking about ancillary stuff like this, but I wonder if DC will end up giving Caped Crusader a Batman Adventures-style comic tie-in.

So it sounds like this is going to be more serialized than Batman: The Animated Series, which I’m more than fine with!

gonna be interesting what differentiates this form the many prior and upcoming bat universe stuff

Well for one thing, it definitely looks like they are leaning harder into the original 1930s aesthetic.

It would be nice if each of the 10 episodes would run for 35-40 minutes.

Even with The Batman looking so amazing, fresh and exciting, on paper Caped Crusader has everything to take the lead as my most anticipated Batman project. Burton movies and TAS were my gateway to the character and remains solid pillar of my love for it. More significantly, my immediate love for Bruce Timm's art and the whole art direction for his show probably plant the little seed for my professional life. So yeah, I'm extremely looking forward that new series !

The only two little worries I sometimes have with this are the quality of the animation and the music.
I hope to see something as carefully crafted in motions, and shadow work than what TMS came up with in episodes like "Feat of Clay part.II" or even the "Lost Episode" from the Batman & Robin Adventures Sega videogame. With only ten episodes, I think there's hope for something pretty polished.
The other is the music. Sadly, Shirley Walker isn't with us anymore but I think it would be nice to stay in a similar soundscape. Especially with the whole retro aesthetic. To push a bit more the noir feel, I wouldn't be against some good old walking bass and brasses !

Really hope they bring back title cards for this one.

I won’t even be able to process my enjoyment because my hype for this is so high. I’ll be shocked if this is anything less than phenomenal.

hope we get some news on this. would be neat if the superman show was as interesting as this...and yea to get a Wonder Woman animate series which has been long overdue.

I know brubaker doesnt seem too interested in cape stuff but it'd be neat if Reeves could bring him in as a consultant or something for the potential catwoman spinoff

Considering Reeves’s involvement, I’m interested to see if Brubaker, Timm or Abrams are at the premiere tomorrow. Based on Scott Snyder’s tweets, I know other Bat-adjacent people got an invite.

And someone tell Bruce Timm not to shoehorn in another Bruce/Barbara pairing (if she is ever introduced in this). Absolutely no one wants that.

That's probably the first of his demands. Holding a cardboard box where he typed "Barbara luves Bruce" .

*SIGH*

The Bruce/Barbra pairing was pitched by Alan Burnett on Batman Beyond, NOT Bruce Timm. Just like it was pitched by Alan Burnett and Brian Azzarello for Batman: The Killing Joke. Timm was not the almighty creator on these projects... it was a collaborative effort, so suddenly reducing Timm and his great work with this character over the last thirty years to ''Hurr, horny guy better not mess it up!! HaHa' is infantile and reductive.

Anyway on to more positive news. Greg Rucka is writing an episode!

So, back on topic... what have I got for you this time? The past month or so I've done several podcasts or zoom interviews... I've been writing Friday and the 5th Reckless book while working on the Batman show with Bruce Timm. And also starting to adapt one of our books that I've got a star attached to, but more on that in the next few months, hopefully. On the Batman front, we only freelanced a few episodes in this first season, but I still managed to bring in a few great writers, one of who (whom?) used to work on Batman-related stuff with me back in the old days. I can't tell you who it is, but his name rhymes with Craig Stucka and it was a lot of fun to work with him again.

Considering she originated on BTAS and Rucka has written for her quite a bit in the comics, I wonder if Renee Montoya will be in the mix.

Marc Bernardin is also writing an episode. Kind of ironic that he is working on the show that Kevin Smith purported as a B:TAS sequel series. Roughly @9:15...

Really curious about how long we’ve got to wait before casting drops.

And if not casting, then at least character confirmations beyond Batman himself.

If it drops in late 2023, then we probably have a wait on our hands. I'm just curious about the voice of Batman, but I suppose they could drop that news during San Diego or New York Comic Con this year.

didnt even think about the cast. could see some big names tbh. Invincible level cast tho imagine that!

I do hope its not Conroy tho.i know people love him and nothing against him. but someone new

I think they'll go for a ''name cast'' as well. Any ideas who you would cast (new to the role) that wouldn't be too expensive? They have gone for some great choices recently:

Jensen Ackles (Batman: The Long Halloween)
Ethan Hawke (Batwheels)
Keanu Reeves (DC Super-Pets)
Anson Mount (Injustice)

Ethan Hawke doing Batwheels still shocks me.
