2013: The Re-Up (box office predictions) - Part 1

Absolutely it can. Look at what Return of the King did 10 years ago. What The Hobbit barely did last year and how many movies now cross a billion. And their big blockbuster couldn't do it. I'd be really disappointed in it.

Sure, compared to one of the biggest movies of all time, it's quite the disappointment. If your biggest piece of evidence regarding a disappointment is the fact that it just barely reached a level that only 17 films in the history of movies have, then you have ridiculously unrealistic standards for a movie like this. Sure, WB wants a billion, as they would like a billion for every single movie they release. Doesn't mean in a million years that they are disappointed in 850 mil worldwide for a film series that, beyond getting ridiculously negative press for its very existence, is coming on a full decade after a lightning in a bottle phenomenon that barely anyone has been able to replicate in the genre.

And lets not forget that the original LotR-trilogy didn't have any boost from 3D and IMAX, plus the market in countries like China was much smaller back then. RotK made only around $10 million in China while the first Hobbit made close to $50 million. And thanks to China the second Hobbit should make it past $900 million at least once it's released there. Stiil kind of underwhelming numbers. Personally I feel that while the LotR-trilogy was a movie event, the Hobbit-movies are more like milking money with nothing really new to offer.

That's because they stretched one book into three movies, so Peter Jackson crammed many unrelated stories into the trilogy to make it work, just so WB can make more money out of this franchise.

I think the first movie may have turned a lot of people off. I liked the second one a lot better. Since it didn't have to deal with all the setup

...What a time to be alive.

Bloody hell. I thought I was subscribed to this thread. No wonder I've not seen it pop up in so long.

Frozen got the $1B! These films aimed at the younger audience are going to keep getting stronger as the overseas audience grows. Not every foreign territory likes every kind of blockbuster but they pretty much all have kids (& their parents) and regular guys who will like these films.

With about $1.072 billion, Frozen has OFFICIALLY become the biggest animated film of all time.
