‘Karate Kid’ TV Sequel Starring Ralph Macchio & William Zabka Set For YouTube Red http://deadline.com/2017/08/karate-kid-tv-sequel-starring-ralph-macchio-william-zabka-youtube-red-1202142435/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter …

Iconic The Karate Kid film franchise is getting small screen treatment with Cobra Kai, a 10-episode half-hour series set for YouTube Red in 2018.

The series, from Sony Pictures Television Studios and Overbrook Entertainment, reteams Ralph Macchio and William Zabka in their star-making roles from the feature franchise.

Logline: Thirty years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, a down-and-out Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo, reigniting his rivalry with a now successful Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi. The show is about two men addressing past demons and present frustrations the only way they know how: through karate.

Cobra Kai is written and executive produced by Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine), and Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold & Kumar, American Reunion). Together, the trio conceived of the new Karate Kid storyline that picks-up decades after the original film ends. Hurwitz & Schlossberg will direct much of the series. James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett will executive produce for Overbrook Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television Studios.

“The minute I heard about this project, I knew we had to have it. The Karate Kid became an instant classic in the 1980s, and still resonates with audiences around the world and on YouTube today,” said Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Original Content, YouTube. “We’re thrilled to partner with Sony TV, Overbrook and the talented writing team led by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg to add a fresh, new comedic twist on one of Hollywood’s most storied rivalries.”
“Continuing the story of The Karate Kid has been a passion project for all of us, and when Ralph and Billy said yes, we knew it had become real,” said Glenn Adilman, EVP Comedy Development, Sony Pictures Television Studios. “We are thrilled that YouTube Red felt the same thing the minute they heard the pitch and then stepped up with this series commitment.”
“Like everyone who grew up in the 1980s, the three of us are enormous fans of The Karate Kid,” said Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg. “Cobra Kai will be a true continuation of the original films – packed with comedy, heart, and thrilling fight scenes. We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry, and we’re thankful to our partners at YouTube Red, Sony Pictures Television, and Overbrook for their shared enthusiasm in making our dream project a reality.”
With over $619 million at the worldwide box office, The Karate Kid franchise has entertained millions of fans for over 3 generations. For years, YouTube fans from around the world have also kept the legend of the films alive through uploads of clips, tributes and related content, amassing over 1 billion views to date.

If anything, this is the true sequel rather than a spin-off. Not sure how to feel about the comedic approach.

Cobra Kai!

I wonder if Kreese is still lurking about? They all do the same conventions together.

Oh-kay. Wow. Never would have figured. But kudos, I guess, to the principals involved.

Well if it is a comedy in the vain of Community or Office Space, I actually would be okay with it. If it becomes too brooding and dower , i'll skip it.

I'd be fun for them to get Elisabeth Shue again or even bring other actors from the franchise such as Tamlyn Tomita, Yuji Okumoto, and Sean Kanan. Even Hillary Swank's character meeting Daniel would be funny.

They need to bring back the Glory of Love:

Barney Stinson will be overjoyed at this news.

Is this real life?

Interesting, that definitely doesn't look like the straight-up broad comedy people have been saying.

Just cool to see Macchio back, Daniel-san's awesome.

If this is just an elaborate advertisement by a touring company for Reseda I'm gonna be pissed.

Not really getting why Johnny's still all brutal "no mercy!" like in the original. It's been a few years since I've seen it, but he kind of came around in the end of the first one, breaking from Kreese and his outlook, no?

Seems that way:

It's been 30 years, Danielle is a moderately successful family man and Johnny is basically a broke loser, so he reopens the dojo. At first when I heard this I thought that Johnny just wanted to make a living and Danielle was going to try and stop him (switching bully roles), then maybe the two reconcile and both train this kid that's being bullied in the series. But after hearing Johnny narrate the teaser and keeping the "No Mercy" dojo principle, maybe his crappy life made him jaded.

I'm so psyched for this show!

Me too!

As someone who saw the first two in the theaters , I was skeptical about the show at first .

Having seen the trailers though, it actually looks pretty good .
