EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has set a killer cast for Spiderhead, landing Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller and Lovecraft Country breakout Jurnee Smollett to star in the Joseph Kosinski-directed adaptation of the George Saunders short story. Script is by Zombieland and Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick.

Kosinski is making this his next film after directing Top Gun: Maverick with Tom Cruise, which boasts Teller as one of its stars.

Spiderhead is set in the near future, when convicts are offered the chance to volunteer as medical subjects in hopes of shortening their sentences. The focus is on two prisoners who become the test patients for emotion-altering drugs that force the prisoners to grapple with their pasts in a facility run by a brilliant visionary who supervises the program.

he film will be produced by Eric Newman for Screen Arcade through the producer’s first-look deal at Netflix, along with Chris Hemsworth; Oren Katzeff and Geneva Wasserman for The New Yorker Studios; Reese & Wernick, Tommy Harper and Jeremy Steckler

Saunders’ short story first ran in The New Yorker and was later collected in his bestselling anthology, Tenth Of December.

Hemsworth just toplined Extraction, the AGBO-produced action film that became Netflix’s most watched feature ever, with a sequel coming. Smollett, who burst on the scene in the latter seasons of Friday Night Lights, most recently co-starred on the big screen in Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey.

Besides Top Gun: Maverick, Teller’s other credits include Whiplash and Only the Brave.

Hemsworth, Teller, Smollett and Kosinski are all repped by CAA. Hemsworth is also repped by Fourward and Morrissey Management and Smollett is also repped by Management 360 and Del, Shaw, Moonves, Tanaka, Finkelstein & Lezcano. Teller is also repped by Chad Christopher at Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher.

NETFLIX announces two more Australian productions featuring CHRIS HEMSWORTH and TONI COLLETTE | TV Blackbox
Escape from Spiderhead, a Netflix film featuring Chris Hemsworth, and directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick, Tron Legacy, and Oblivion) is set in the near future, where two young convicts grapple with their pasts in a facility run by a brilliant visionary, who experiments on inmates with emotion-altering drugs.

Filming will take place on the Gold Coast, commencing in this month.

The story reads like something that PTA would have adapted if he ever wanted to dip into sci-fi. It's a pretty bleak mixture of dark comedy, brutal determinism, and searing existential conceits.

So the fact this is being written by the Deadpool guys and directed by slick 'n sterile Kosinski makes me think the film is going to be nothing whatsoever like the story except for maybe some kernel of the premise. I also have a hard time imagining this turning out good cuz, again, this is the kind of story that a PTA, Bong Joon Ho, Brandon Cronenberg, Chan Wook Park, Claire Denis... they could have done something amazing with this. Kosinski and the writers of Zombieland, though? What?

Interesting cast and premise, and I like Kosinski’s movies personally.

One thing Joseph Kosinski is gonna do is make a beautiful looking movie.

Seems interesting enough. Wouldn't restart my Netflix subscription for it tho

Nah doesnt interest me. It looks lame. Alot of unfunny stuff and overacting.

Is this suppose to be funny? Its just weird and even boring.

I have no clue what this movie tries to tell but I am also not interested enough to find this out.
Also, its not a little bit of challenging role for Hemsworth. Easy paycheck.
Looks like another Netflix garbage movie with wasted potential to me.

Not even sure what to make of that. Doesn't seem like anyone was cast for the proper role in it. Except for Journee, she's always proper.

Precisely.

This looks alright.

The trailer intrigued me but I couldn’t make any sense of what was going on. Had to look up the Wikipedia page to get an idea of the story. I like the look of the film though. I’ve been critical of Kosinski’s overall work as a director in the past but I’ve always thought he had a great eye for visuals and this looks to be no exception.

Reading up on the premise though, it seems like maybe Hemsworth and Teller should have switched roles? Maybe not though.

It was decent. Not much to it but i enjoyed everyone in their roles. It's like Dollhouse, the origin story to a degree.

Hemsworth is certainly charismatic and did a good job going through the motions.
