Development on the Wii U version of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has been cancelled in favor of the previously confirmed Switch version, project lead Koji Igarashi said in a Kickstarter update today.
Here’s the full message from Igarashi:
Hello, this is IGA.
Thank you for always supporting us. I would like to give a message to the backers who pledged for the Wii U version of Bloodstained.
During our Kickstarter campaign, the Wii U was at the height of its popularity, but the situation has drastically changed after the release of Nintendo Switch.
This change made it difficult to receive the necessary support from the hardware maker, which has led us to drop the Wii U development and shift the development to Nintendo Switch.
We are very sorry that it has come to this after all your support, but we hope you will understand. We would like to respond by preparing options for our backers, such as moving your pledge to another version or requesting a refund if you don’t want any other version.
We hope you will continue to support us.

If you backed Bloodstained on Kickstarter and selected the Wii U version in your backer survey, you’ll automatically be moved to the Switch version.

If you selected the Wii U version and want to move to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, or PS Vita version, you can go to your backer survey and change it now via the “Change Your Survey Answers” link.

If you selected the Wii U version and don’t want any other version, you’re eligible for a cancellation and refund if you filled out your backer survey and selected the Wii U version prior to today, backed at an unlimited tier, are able to receive a refund via PayPal, and submit your request to [email protected] with the subject “Bloodstained Wii U Refund” before April 20, 2017.

In other news, a regularly scheduled Bloostained update is coming soon and will introduce three of the characters protagonist Miriam will meet during the game.

Bloodstained details new characters Dominique, Alfred, and Anne

Published 4 hours ago. 22 comments.

Plus, watch the latest Ask IGA.

Bloodstained-Characters_03-28-17_Top.jpg

Koji Igarashi has released the latest “Ask IGA” and revealed three new characters for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

The new characters consist of Dominique, a woman who supports protagonist Miriam, Alfred, a man related to an incident that occurred 10 years ago in the game, and Anne, a young villager.

In a message, Igarashi said that he still needs to decide on voice actors for the characters, and that the team is “currently working on parts of the game that were available as backer rewards, such as enemy and weapon designs.”

Here are the details on the new characters:

Dominique Baldwin (Age: 25)

An exorcist dispatched by the church, she supports Miriam as the shopkeeper. She speaks in a posh way, but she treats everyone kindly. While the church believes Miriam and Gebel to be demons, Dominique trusts them as human beings. In order to foil Gebel’s ambitions, she asks her old friend Johannes to summon Miriam.

Alfred (Age: 57)

Alfred is one of the alchemists responsible for the demon-summoning uproar ten years ago. He was Johannes’s mentor, and a father figure to both Johannes and Miriam, but he’s lost his former self as he heads to the castle seeking the Book of Logaeth in Gebel’s possession. Quite and intelligent, Alfred’s alchemic ability was unmatched even among his fellow alchemists.

Anne Knolles (Age: 12)

A village girl whose parents were murdered. Anne was saved by Dominique and Miriam when demons attacked her village. When Dominique is out of town, Anne looks after the shop. She is a bright and cheerful girl.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is due out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, and PS Vita in the first half of 2018.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night E3 2017 trailer, gameplay, and screenshots
Published 5 hours ago. 55 comments.

14 minutes of new gameplay footage.

Bloodstained_06-09-17.jpg

505 Games has released a new trailer, gameplay footage, and screenshots from Koji Igarashi’s Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night ahead of E3 2017 next week.
Here’s an overview of the game, via 505 Games:

About
It’s the late 18th century England, an era when people’s lives changed dramatically with the ushering in of the Industrial Revolution. You are Miriam, an orphan scarred by an alchemist’s demonic curse, which is slowly turning her skin to crystal. As the curse matures, Miriam drifts into a mysterious coma and awakens ten years later as a castle appears and Hell is resurrected. Now, she must travel to the castle to hunt and kill its summoner, Gebel, battling his demons as she searches for a way to stop the curse.
This imaginative, side-scrolling game is the latest opus from the renowned Koji Igarashi, godfather of the “Igavania” genre of gothic, exploration-focused action platformers. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a spiritual successor to his much-loved and highly acclaimed Castlevania series. Initially revealed on Kickstarter with a goal of $500,000, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night went on to become one of the most funded games on the platform, with more than $5.5 million pledged by fans eager for its creation.
Key Features

    • Genre-Defining Innovators: Bloodstained is created by Koji Igarashi, who has been designing games since the early ‘90s, beginning with Castlevania, a game that has inspired generations of designers since its release. Bloodstained also features music from Michiru Yamane, the composer for a huge number of Castlevania titles, as well as Super Smash Bros. and Skullgirls; and voice acting from talent including David Hayter (Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid) and Robbie Belgrade (Alucard, Castlevania).
    • A Haunting Gothic World: Bloodstained’s story unfolds as you explore Gebel’s hellish castle; a sprawling structure that features a variety of eerie locations guarded by malevolent demons. As you explore the massive palace, you’ll find helpful Warp Gates that will allow you to traverse quickly through it without having to backtrack.
    • Classic RPG Elements: It’s not an Igavania without leveling, and Bloodstained will be no exception. In addition to the classic elements everyone’s come to expect, enemies in Bloodstained will drop a wide variety of items, materials and magi-crystals necessary to create the items that will get you safely through Gebel’s castle.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is due out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, and PS Vita in the first half of 2018.

Bloodstained Developers Are Considering A Staggered Model For Releasing Content . July 9, 2017 . 5:30pm

Koji Igarashi and the developers of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night still have a lot of work and early 2018 will be here before long. That said, the creators are considering a “staggered model” for releasing content.

Castlevania series producer and Bloodstained creator Koji Igarashi shared some of his thoughts in a recent interview with App Trigger. Here are some points of interest from the recent discussion:

App Trigger: You’ve been working in the video game industry for more than a quarter century, yet it’s been just a few years with the Kickstarter process. What has been the biggest new challenge that the Bloodstained team has encountered that may not have appeared before approaching the backer system?
Koji Igarashi: The biggest difference in working with a large company before starting a Kickstarter is that everything was there already. All the employees, all the talented people, a group of people that are there to run the business was already there for me, so I was able to focus on developing a game.
This time, I started out my own company, starting a Kickstarter, and everything has to start from scratch. I had to find people; I had to find developers. It was challenging to find these developers that could work on this game, and just trying to run this business myself; everything was a challenge.

In the most recent edition of Bloodstained, we’ve seen a noticeable improvement in the depth of environmental design within a 2.5D scale. Not only is there a layer in the foreground, but you see several layers of the background moving in parallax. Tells us more about the importance of detailed background environments when making a 2.5D game such as Bloodstained.
Koji Igarashi: What we wanted to do, since it’s 3D, we definitely wanted to add depth. We wanted to rotate the screen as much as we could to take advantage of the 3D aspect. But what we really wanted to do was make a 3D game with a 2D gameplay style.

In order to do that, a lot of 3D side-scrolling games have a very dark foreground and then a very light background. If you think about very old-school 2D games or pixel games, you see a lot of the foreground being very bright and the background being very dark. We wanted to incorporate that in this 3D environment from Bloodstained to actually show those 2D elements from old-school games.

Can Nintendo Switch owners expect a similar level of background detail as the platform shown off in the trailers?
Koji Igarashi: Currently, we’re not in the middle of porting to Nintendo Switch just yet, but we are starting porting to PS Vita. In comparison to that porting process, we feel confident that the environments will look pretty similar, but we can’t say for sure until we really look into the Nintendo Switch specs and see what it’s like building a game for it

How has the decision to release Bloodstained content using a staggered model affected the development of the game’s intended content down the road?
Koji Igarashi: Right now, nothing is very set for Bloodstained yet. We are considering a staggered model for released content. We know the benefits of it; having content released separately, from time to time, also generates hype from having fans think about the game for longer. This is something that we haven’t really set yet, so it’s something we’ll have to discuss later.

Inti Creates Is No Longer Involved With The Main Development Of Bloodstained . July 25, 2017 . 8:30am

In a post over on Bloodstained’s official forums, it was confirmed that Inti Creates left the main development of the game during E3 last year.

Koji Igarshi’s Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is set to release next year, but it appears Inti Creates, which was originally involved in the development of the game, is no longer a part of the main project.

In a post over on Bloodstained’s official forums, it was confirmed that Inti Creates left the main development of the game during E3 last year. Since then, DICO has taken over the role that Inti Creates left, while ArtPlay still remains the main developer. It is worth noting that Inti Creates is still involved in developing the prequel minigame.

Here’s the full statement from the official forums:

Maybe it is best to clarify it here. Inti Creates is not involved in the main development of the Bloodstained game, but they are involved in the prequel mini-game. Part of the vagueness is to avoid unneeded attention and negative speculation. So yes, they are involved but not in the main game since last year’s E3. DICO has picked up the development from where they have left off under mutual agreement.

A lot of parties are involved so it could be quite confusing. ArtPlay is the main developer, while we are hiring DICO as a third party developer. We created the game design, story, direction, gimmicks, and the overall production of the game while DICO creates art assets, design levels, and basically filling in the manpower ArtPlay doesn’t have. In the future, you’ll most likely see 505 Games and ArtPlay credited on trailer videos and articles to come out.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night will release for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation Vita in Q1 of 2018.

Koji Igarashi Discusses Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Why They Chose A Female Lead, And More. August 22, 2017 . 8:30am

Koji Igarashi discussed whether Bloodstained was made more for himself or for the fans, on making a 3D game in a 2D genre, and why they decided to go with a female lead.

19 comments Read >

Koji Igarashi’s Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is set to release in March next year, and Gamasutra recently sat down with Igarashi to discuss his upcoming game. In the interview, Igarashi discussed whether Bloodstained was made more for himself or for the fans, how difficult it is to make a 3D game in a 2D genre, and why exactly they decided to make the main character of the game female.

Gamasutra: So you’re making another Igavania, as the fans like to call them. Is this because it’s something you truly wanted to do, or is it more for the fans?

Koji Igarashi: There’s no doubt that I love this genre myself. But in a related topic, I think the answer to this question is what makes us different from “indies.” When I think of indie, I believe an indie game is based on a developer’s personal preference.
For Bloodstained, this is a title that started out on Kickstarter to answer the fans’ wish for another Igavania game, moreso than what I want to create. I feel that it is my duty to answer the fans’ wishes first, and so I’ve been shaping the game’s vision in that direction.

GS: What for you are the main differences between 2D and 3D assets in a game with 2D gameplay? What are the challenges of creating a 3D game in a 2D genre?

KI: Right, so our game uses 3D assets with 2D side-scrolling gameplay. The biggest differences between [side-scrolling] games and 3D games that are meant to be played on 3D environments are the responses, and placements of objects in 2D gameplay.
These responses and placements of objects are very specific and limited with 2D gameplay, while 3D gameplay puts more emphasis on the timing of each action.
In Bloodstained, differentiating the platforms [that players can jump on] from the environment was very challenging, and there were people who were confused by earlier implementations. We’re trying very hard to improve it by changing around the lighting without hindering the gameplay and visual appearance.
Another factor is the screen’s field of view. When the field of view becomes wider, it becomes difficult to know where players can jump, as well as the corners of the screen warps.
The most challenging part for us was figuring out where the hitboxes were when using 3D models in a 2D side-scrolling environment. It’s completely different from developing a 3D game that could be viewed from all different angles. We make sure the collisions are adjusted to have that 2D action feel.

GS: Bloodstained has a female lead, which is great. Japan’s bosses use to say having female leads would mean a game wouldn’t sell. How do you feel about that?

KI: A large reason for choosing a female lead was the Kickstarter. When we thought about collecting funds from Kickstarter, and thought about the modern social movement in America, having a female lead felt right, but also calculated. But in the end I could care less whether the lead is male or female as long as the game is fun to play. I did have a challenging time coming up with the story, but that could be said for a lead character of any gender.

To read the full interview with Igarashi, you can go here.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is set to release sometime in March 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Wii U.

The latest Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night development update includes gameplay of a new courtyard area and battle against a character named Zangestu.

Here’s creator Koji Igarashi on the new footage:
Courtyards are just as important to an IGAvania as castles, right? Maybe not? Well, this time the courtyard is a very important part of the game, and that’s why we’re sharing a look at this area.

Zangetsu is a samurai character we’ve previously announced. He resents anyone and anything tainted by demonic power. As a result, he’s hostile toward Miriam, whose existence is directly connected to the demon ritual. This is also a new stage we’re introducing for the first time.

In addition to the footage, Igarashi also shared three tracks from the game composed by veteran game music team Noisycroak:

Hello everyone, this is IGA. For this update I’d like to share what we’ve been referring to as the “Miriam Fashion Show.” In Bloodstained, weapons, accessories, and scarves all change the player character’s appearance. Today we’d like to show you a few of those items.
All the weapons you see here are new additions. There’s a fire sword, a two-handed axe, and a few other kinds of weapons. There’s even a maid headband that’s similar to the kind you might see in Akihabara.

We haven’t shown this before today—we can actually change hairstyles and scarves, too. Miriam looks so different when her hairstyle changes. This new one looks very fierce!

In addition, we included a look at three Bunny items—a headband, a scarf, and some boots. I think it’s a very stylish look, personally…

This system is another way to personalize the game, and I hope you have fun with it.

We also have a new enemy to share: the Giant Rat. When I imagine medieval Europe, I can’t help but think of rats. That might be a stereotype, but we definitely had to have a rat enemy.

Currently, the development is in its crunch period—right now we’re working on some important bosses. There is no holiday for us, but we will do our best! See you all soon!

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is set to release in 2018 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. You can check out last month’s update with a battle against Zangetsu and in the courtyard area in our previous report.

Decision "largely due to Sony’s plans to discontinue the Vita console."

Bloodstained_08-20-18.jpg
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has been delayed from its previously planned “first half of 2018” release window to 2019, and the PS Vita version is no longer in development, publisher 505 Games announced. It will now only be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.

Find messages from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night director Koji Igarashi and 505 Games global brand manager Robert Piraino below.

Koji Igarashi, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Director
Hi everyone, IGA here.
There are two important announcements we would like to make in this month’s update.

Our first announcement is that the game will now launch in 2019. The most important reason for this is to raise the quality level, especially after all the very valuable feedback from the Beta Backer Demo.
The second announcement is that the game will no longer launch on PlayStation Vita. This decision is largely due to Sony’s plans to discontinue the Vita console, ending production of physical copies and stopping certain online store support features.

It is extremely unfortunate, but as a result, we won’t be releasing the game on Vita. For the backers who have ordered the PS Vita version of the game, you will be able to choose another platform or request a refund.
This process should be expected through an email that will be sent by Fangamer. It may be troublesome, but please be sure to respond and make the changes. [Note: Vita backers will be receiving an e-mail with additional instructions soon.

Vita backers who would like to change platforms can do so now on their survey pages. Vita backers who backed at an unlimited tier and can receive a refund over PayPal can submit a request before 9/20/18 to initiate a manual refund of the affected games.]

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or disappointment, but rest assured we are working harder than ever to deliver the game we all made happen together, please bear with us for a little longer and I thank you for your continued support.

Robert Piraino, 505 Games Global Brand Manager
Hey everyone, we’re sorry to make you wait a little longer for Bloodstained, but you can trust that this really is in the best interest of the game – and our players. We assure you we’re using the extra time to make Bloodstainedeven better, based on your input.

Being a huge PlayStation & Sony fan myself, I also know cancelling the Vita version of the game may be disappointing to some of you, but with Sony’s plans to discontinue the console and physical production of games, removing Vita titles from PS+ lineups etc., it was an unfortunate but necessary decision to make. We really hope you’ll continue to support us on one of the other platforms available.

If you have any concerns about these updates, please come talk to me and our great Sr. Community Manager, Jason Ryan, on Discord, Facebook, Twitter or our forums: We’re always happy to discuss and answer your questions.

Thank you again to everyone who continues to support us with your feedack and passion for Bloodstained. Stay tuned for more announcements as development progresses!

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night development team adds WayForward

New enemy concept art revealed.

Shantae developer WayForward has joined the Bloodstained: Ritual of the Nightdevelopment team, publisher 505 Games announced.

Here is the full message from creator Koji Igarashi:

It’s me, IGA.

For this month’s update, we have an incredible support who will be joining the Bloodstained team. Can you guess who? It’s WayForward!

That’s right, WayForward, the makers of Shantae! As you may already know, they are top-tier when it comes to side-scrolling action games. There is even a staff member who previously worked on one of my projects, which is incredibly encouraging.

In consideration of their past achievements, WayForward will be helping the development team realize my vision for this game. Maybe I am even more excited than everyone else – with their help Bloodstained will become an even better game.

We also have some new enemy concept art to show you. This is Cyhyreath.

Cyhyreath first appears to be crouching on the floor. Once the player approaches her, she will fly around and make a death shriek to attack the player.

It’s a traditional gothic horror design, and I think it’s lovely.

I was talking with the team just before writing this comment and, with WayForward’s help, they have been busy helping to improve the game and fix any bugs that pop up.

Speaking of which, there’s a really tough one that’s making the game crash that needs to be fixed before the game reaches everyone, so we are scything through them all.

Thank you, everyone, for your continued support!

Even with a reduced team, they are taking way too long to come out. They're under the risk of losing any relevance left when it finally comes out.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
is the result of a Kickstarter by Koji Igarashi — former Producer at Konami who was involved in the acclaimed Castlevania series — which saw the first game in Bloodstained series(Curse of the Moon) being released in May of last year.

Igarashi's Ritual of the Night, however, has seen quite a few delays since the project began back in 2015, being pushed back to what seems to be a very definitive release window of summer 2019.

The reason for the delays has to do with the developers wanting to deliver a very polished game to both players and the original backers of the Kickstarter campaign; which makes sense any way we look at it.

Today we get a new update for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, which comes as a comparison video showing the graphics in last year's demo of the game(available only for backers who supported the kicksterter with a minimum of $60) and the current state of the project; showing a substantial change in the textures.

Take a look:

Play as Miriam, an orphan scarred by an alchemist's curse that slowly crystallizes her body. Battle through a demon-infested castle and defeat its master to save yourself, and all of humanity.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam in summer of 2019.

I think the hype for this game was hurt inadvertently by Mighty No. 9.
