Looks like Guardians of the Galaxy has influenced Hollywood that they don't need to use popular songs for movies to do well in the box office for movie theaters, this is being showcased with Thor Ragnarok with Led Zeppelin, Spider-Man Homecoming with Ramones, and Ready Player One with the 70's and 80's music.

Those were all popular songs. They're just older popular songs.

Guardians, Thor, and Spiderman were all made by the same studio and RPO is basically about nostalgia.

You aren't very old, are you?

It was not too long ago that such soundtracks featuring old school mixes of obscure pieces and top 40 hits was so common that people were critical and dismissive of such use of music for movies. Many thought it cliche'.

Also... Even in recent history, uh... GotG isn't the first film to do this.

Have you head of Martin Scorsese? Quentin Tarantino? Edgar Wight?

Directors have been using classic songs in their films long before GotG was a gleam in James Gunn's eye and long before Marvel Studios.
