"The Dark Fan", the greatest sequel to a fan-film ever made!

Hey folks!

Well I've got a thread on this board regarding "Bat-Fan Begins", a short fan-film I made last Spring. Now the sequel is finally released upon the public!

Much like "Bat-Fan Begins", "The Dark Fan" is not a "fan-film" in the sense that we tried to mimic Gotham City and all of its inhabitants with nowhere near the resources it'd require. Rather, we take a look at fandom and how crazy it can turn normal people.

The sequel is bigger, better, stronger, and filled with a few twists and turns!

Oh yeah, since it was shot in Chicago, Illinios there might be a familar street corner for you fans of "The Dark Knight" (I think there might be a few of you out there).

So let's not delay! Here are the links! The movie is in 5 parts and runs at a little over 30 minutes long:

Please let me know what you think of it! If you like it, spread the word!

Best,

Wow, i've watched 30 seconds so far...and its brilliant. Much better camera work. As an independent film writer/director, I have a few questions.

How many takes did you do on average for each scene?
What Camera did you use?
Did you shoot in 24p? It doesn't appear that you did, I suggest you de-interlace it into 24p footage, it will look badass!
Did you do any color correction in Post?
Did you make a DIY dolly?

Honestly man, great work for the opening minute. I'll watch the rest and post again!

Awesome, will watch it tomorrow. Always a pleasure seeing my city being filmed. :) Did you go to Columbia College for film?

For WGoble,

1. It really depended on the specifics of the shot. Sometimes it'd be one or two takes or for the more action-heavy stuff, up to eight or so.
2. I own a Sony HDR-HC3 camcorder.
3. It wasn't shot in 24p but I later brought it down to 24p in post.
4. I did very minimal color correction. Mainly just to keep up a good contrast in picture throughout.
5. The dolly was purchased by the cinematographer, Shane. It's definitely not a high-end "seen on your average film set" kind of dolly. My guess is that it could be made fairly cheap. It still worked great!

da3dl3us,

Yeah we go to Columbia College for film/video. Chicago is a pretty easy city to shoot in if you go the down-n-dirty route and just go shoot somewhere!

" i think i broke my foot"

wow. alot of work clearly went into this and i applaud your efforts. i love how you made the low budget/fan/non pro actor angle work for your story.

great camera work.

i am in chicago as well and might have access to some resources that you may find useful. send me a pm.

Oh my god,

you have no idea how long I have waited to see this flick. The first one was amazing and this one surpasses it by leaps and bounds. great camera work, great acting. I almost crapped my pant when I realized that the one shot of the goon on the street corner was the exact same shot and location as from The Dark Knight with the joker waiting to be picked up for the bank heist. Amazing job gentlemen, keep up the good work!

Finished watching it. I'm really really impressed. You're filming is more refined since the last one. You can see this is a movie made with love.

I did some film back in college, and was thinking about taking some courses in Columbia. But after finishing up residency, I'll plan on going back into it.

Lovely job on the Batman suit. It's really hard making that believable in fan-films, but I think you did the trick. The mask is the 5 dollar one, right? What did you use to wrap the head?

Just finished watching it - awesome! :woot:

Camera work was top form, as well as the acting. Some of your facial expressions were really great! :hehe: R.I.P Shane's facial hair, haha!

Am in the process of spreading it around my friends right now :cwink:

Excellent job

Camerawork was great but the acting was cringeworthy. Especially the Joker.
Still one of the best fanfilms though!

JokerLedger,

Well at least you liked one aspect of the movie! Thanks for checkin' it out.

I really appreciate all these comments, folks. Just glad to get this in front of some actual Bat-Fans!

I've been waiting anxiously for this part the moment I finished watching Bat-Fan Begins. You did an outstanding job on the second part and you can tell that you put alot of heart into your work! I can't wait to see what more you come up with!

Yes! Sequel! I was hoping there'd be one soon.

This was really great. Really, really great. So much attention to detail, and a fairly intricate plot. And it looked amazing! So much more dynamic than Bat-Fan Begins (which I also loved, but this is way better).

The interrogation scene was great, as was the shot of the goon on the Joker's street corner. It must be amazing to get to shoot on real locations like that!

Top notch all around. Really brilliant work from clearly a brilliant mind.

so...is the next one going to be in LA? when is that one coming out? soon? please?

Really? To each their own, I suppose, but I thought the acting was great, especially the Joker. Heath will obviously overshadow everyone for some time, but they weren't trying to be Heath. As Robert Downey Jr said, he's a dude playing a dude pretending to be another dude. And I thought it worked great (and everyone else was good too, IMO).

I mentioned the official site in a "Bat-Fan Begins" post a little while back but, the "Dark Fan" website has been updated with a collection of behind the scenes photos.

The URL is quite simply www.darkfan.com (pretty simple)

Whenever the site gets updated the layout becomes a little wonky...just bear that in mind.

In the coming week there should also be a behind the scenes documentary of sorts being put up on YouTube as well as the site itself!

I waited, I saw it and now I can say its great. You have done a really good job. An authentic fan-film treating with respect the source material. Congratulations, it´s awesome.

I just recently put up a behind the scenes documentary we shot alongside the making of the short movie.

It's shot more in a "fly on the wall" style rather than the typical "cast/crew interviews with footage of random production intercut within" method.

It covers various beats from pre-production all the way to post.

Four parts, here you go!
