That is true... it does sound like it would be more about the Brainiac character than Superman. It also sounds like Lois would have been non-existent (though maybe since Bosworth would have been playing her, that's not a bad thing).
But yeah, it certainly has its weak spots. I don't know why Singer was so obsessed with turning Superman into Jesus (or into God the Father in the Man of Steel Script). I also don't tend to like the idea of wars being presented in a Superman film (and I hope that they don't delve too much into this in this new Superman movie). Because it just creates an awkward scenario. Superman shouldn't be involved because he's "not to interfere with human history" or whatever, but wars are a gray area. Regardless of who is right or wrong, Superman isn't the type who would just observe from afar while people are killing each other off. I've always interpreted Jor-El's "no interference" policy to mean that Supes shouldn't use his powers to take over the humans, and he shouldn't alter time, like he does in Superman '78.
But in the same sense, having Superman get involved in a war almost feels cheap because it's such a serious and tragic thing and in the real world, such easy solutions do not exist.
