15 Biggest Box Office Flops of 2011

Green Lantern was a mess because it's interest was solely fueled by those who could care less if they made a good movie.

I mean just look at this for goodness sake:

The Last Airbender was another colossal mess that has furthered flushed anime (even though it's American but I still consider it so) adaptations into the proverbial toilet. Dragonball:Evolution was bad but it somehow made TLA (even thought it had a bigger budget to work with) look kind of good (It's still godawful though) and the upcoming Akira film isn't helping.

DC (not counting Batman or Superman) and anime adaptions good luck in ever making it big on the silver screen as executives seem determined in making it so toxic that no one will ever give them a serious shot to shine.

lol oh wow that is pathetic. The marketing campaign was soooo desperate it was funny.

They even had GL colostomy bags. Yes. Seriously.

That list is irrelevant. The Glee concert movie makes double what it cost and it's on the list, but Bucky Larson, which according to wikipedia cost around 10 million to make, and only recieved a little over 2 million, isn't? Come on.....

And I'm by no means going out of my way to defend the Glee movie, because I think it was really lame of them to try to get in on the 3D concert movie trend, but it is ridiculous to list a movie that made back double what it cost instead of a movie that was an 80% loss.

I liked Cowboys and Aliens and GL was okay...just wasn't a blockbuster hit..felt incomplete.

However, GL does stick out in my mind as the biggest flop of 2011.

The worst of it is how it set back almost every other DC property like you guys said. Someone mentioned sometime ago that WB got really lucky with Nolan,Burton, and Donner as all three of those guys were really passionate about their vision with the respective character that it worked (although I'm quite hopeful for Snyders Superman I have a good feeling about that one).

I don't see that happening with any of the other heroes from DC. They aren't going to get that love. I can hope but it's not looking likely that we'll at least get a quality movie but instead 1 hour 45 minute commercial for the toy companies.

It's so embarrassingly pathetic.

He needs to get it. I've actually heard he's still persistent in pursuing the project.

Everyone that's written about his project has expressed how great his idea is. The guy obviously has a great deal of talent and if anyone could do it, it would be Refn.

WB would be stupid not to take up to his offer. I wish him the best of luck in his pursuit and hope WB actually listens.

Not to mention his thought process on why he wants to adapt Wonder Woman is exactly what these DC projects need:

“I think my whole fetish and my interest in Wonder Woman came from three or four years ago…My daughter got obsessed with the Wonder Woman television show. The old, ’70s version. I would watch them back to back with her and really enjoyed them immensely. And I’ve always been fascinated by her as a character. I’m not a knowledgeable comic fanatic, as a lot of other people are. But I was very fascinated by a woman of power. And I couldn’t come [up] with any other great role models for my daughter to, say, ‘That’s a woman.’ Besides her mother. So I started getting wholly, completely obsessed about Wonder Woman and saying, ‘I’ve got to make her as a movie. I’ve got to make my take on it.’ And then I met a comic book writer who told me the origins about her, which was very fascinating and I began to see that myself and the creator of her probably had the same fetish of women. And then I knew that I had to make this film… if it ever gets made

Considering he's Danish i would have thought he'd want to make a Thor movie. But yea, his take on Wonder Woman would be interesting. I'm not sure if WB would go for it.

Sucker Punch and Cowboys & Aliens were the only movies where I left the theater pissed off that I'd spent the money. Those movies deserved to flop.
Really? I didn't watch Sucker Punch yet, but the people that watched it and understood it loved it, and all of those that liked it for that were some of the best students of school, one of them is 14 and loves the Tree of Life.
I'm begining to think that Sucker Punch will be more apreciated with time

I just watched Cowboys & Aliens the other day and I have no idea how it cost $163 million.

New Year's Eve is actually at $83,292,000 worldwide right now... and it probably has some fuel in the tank over the next two weekends. So its by no means a disasterous flop.

Still a pretty weak movie though.

Every director should learn how to do tracking shots from Children of Men.

Amen.
That battle sequence one-shot is still the most jaw-dropping instance of camera technique I have *ever* seen in a movie.

Same here. And the part where all the fighting stops once they realises there is a new baby. That's cinema at it's best.

Now THAT would finally get me excited about the Thor sequel, unlike every actual news story I've read about that film thus far.

Chills just thinking about it. That movie is a masterpiece, and THE best pic of that year, imo.

Oh, I understood it. But I think Sucker Punch failed because it attempted the deliver the deeper message about female empowerment via a bunch of dumb action scenes that went nowhere and ultimately had very little relevance to the plot, along with some poorly constructed "real world" scenes that lacked any real weight. The dream sequences looked cool, but overall just felt like Snyder was sitting there throwing darts at a board full of random ideas and decided to go with whatever ones hit. In the end, the deeper message, to me, was laughable.

Yea, after seeing Valhalla Rising, Refn doing a Thor movie would be amazing.

And totally agreed about Children of Men. Totally robbed at the Oscars. Can't believe it wasn't even nominated for best picture.

As for Sucker Punch? Ehhh... i thought it was alright. But I don't really think it was about female empowerment. But more just about how we use our imaginations or delve into fiction to escape the harsh realities of real life.

I've only seen it once though so...

Wonder Woman is one of the DC characters that I'm not sure would make a good movie, but if Refn does get it, I'll certainly go see it. However, I personally would rather see him take on something darker. I think he could make an epic Dark Tower movie. Gosling would make a great Eddie Dean.

Yea, I don't think WB would let Refn do a Wonder Woman movie. I just couldn't imagine his take of the character not being violent and quite dark. I don't think he's suited to WW to be honest.

100 Bullets, that's what i'd want to see him do, if he does a comic book property.

That's true, it did have that as well. But that was one of the other aspects of it that made little to no sense, or at least needed to be fleshed out more. The movie appeared to take place in a 1940s-1950s setting, and yet this girl's imagination consists of ultra-futuristic speed trains, jet packs and robots? Perhaps, but it appears unlikely. At the very least, there should have been some indication that she was some sci-fi/fantasy nerd somewhere in her real life so that the imagination sequences made more sense, but that would have meant actually developing the characters, and Snyder didn't seem to want to bother with that.

Wonder Woman is certainly tricky, but if the director behind it cares for the character and it's story i think it can be really good, the newest Wonder Woman comic is a proof that a live action movie can work if you embrace the myth part, in fact that comic is what the tv show pilot should have been more like

Oh, I'm sure it can be good... I hate to sound sexist here but unfortunately, female-led action films are tough to sell to mainstream audiences though. For some reason Angelina Jolie is apparently the only bankable female action star out there these days (which makes little sense to me, since she looks frail as hell). And a WW film would NEED to make money, no matter how good it is.

I'm curious to see how Haywire does, and if Gina Carano can act. She can obviously kick ass, so perhaps if she is also a good actress, she could make a good WW. She has the look for it, IMO.

No wonder, he probably loved the outfits they wore. :hehe:

In all seriousness, I don't see Sucker Punch getting more appreciated with time at all. Sucker punch is just a badly made and unfocused movie that suffered since the premise and the themes clash. A girl uses her dreams to escape reality. That's fine and it would have been fine if Snyder kept it that simple. But he tried to go for more and it was him who said he wanted to make a statement about feminism in the movie and he tries to do that too. He also tried to use fantasy to intertwine with her reality. The movie was too complex structurally and thematically for Snyder to handle. He shouldn't have written the script. If anything, he should have done what Aronofsky does and give his idea to a screenwriter and let them do their thing (like he did for Black Swan) and then use their script.

Refn has shown that he's most comfortable with rated R movies, and he certainly does tend to be dark with his characters, so agreed.

Like I said, Snyder should never go anywhere near a script alone again.

I hope Haywire is good. Carano looks like she has potential.

Refn is an incredibly smart director. He doesn't necessarily need to do rated R flicks for his stuff to work. Not many would think the director of Memento could have done a PG-13 Batman movie I'm sure but look how well that turned out.

Seeing a Refn directed Wonder Woman starring Gina Carano would seriously be the best thing ever. Now that would be an inspired choice in both the directorial sense and for a lead actress. I probably need to see Haywire but her voice & looks and not to mention her legitimate badassness is what Wonder Woman exactly needs. From what I've seen in the trailer she's already emitting a better performance than any recent female actress in an action movie.

Did I watch the same Haywire trailers as everyone else? I'm looking forward to Haywire for the action scenes but Carano's line delivery in the trailers alone have me cringing. I hope she does well because I look forward to seeing a real female action hero for a change, but the trailers have not given me ANY faith in her acting abilities.

I don't think you can determine that an actor's line delivery is poor simply from a trailer because often, they cut scenes in ways that make lines sound awkward. And in the trailers of Haywire I've seen, Carano hasn't said much; they mostly just showed her kicking ass.
