The Suicide Squad: General Discussion and Speculation

More like a grindhouse midnight B movie mixed with Dirty Dozen, whereas yeah, Guardians is more like Indiana Jones and Star Wars with 80s pop culture references.

I watched this again last night for the 2nd time as the first watch was kind of chaotic with kids running in the room etc. I have to say that the acting, directing, writing and vfx were all top notch and the overall vision of Gunn was clear unlike the 2016 version you could just see studio interference every 10 minutes and subplots chopped together. It was nice to get to see villains we may not have otherwise seen except maybe on CW.

The middle of the film after they cleared the camp out of the resistance soldiers just dragged but then came back together in the 3rd act when the main threat showed up. The main subplot is goofy and weak but the movie is really saved by the rich characters and Gunn’s ability to make you care for them in a short time. This film succeeded at what the 2016 version failed to do at storytelling and making better use of the potential of characters like Diablo, Deadshot and Kitanna.

4/5

I'm not up-to-date on Suicide Squad members so, question. It's obvious, to me anyway, that Bloodsport was meant to fill in for Will Smith's Deadshot. Is Bloodsport a commonly seen character in the comics, or is he just a discount Deadshot?

I like Elba but felt his character was just a rehash of Smith’s Deadshot.
On paper, yes. They clearly wanted to bring Deadshot back for this, hence the same skillset and the daughter subplot. When it was originally announced that Elba was in this, it was reported that he was supposed to be taking over the role of Deadshot but that was debunked. But whereas Deadshot just felt kind of like Smith playing Smith (which was fine because he's always enjoyable to watch), Elba really made the character of Bloodsport his own.

I loved this movie so much, I saw it on HBO Max but I think I'm going to watch it again in theaters to help support it. I heard it hasn't been making too much at the box office (understandable, because of COVID). But I also heard it got a relatively low cinemascore of B+? What's that about? I thought audiences would love this movie...I know I did. But it just seems like it has all the parts to have mass appeal for anyone that actually makes it to the theater (I don't think there would be too many confused and upset parents that accidentally took their kids to a gory R-rated film, and be upset as a result)

Anyone know why the cinemascore isn't in the A range?

This felt like what a live-action Venture Bros movie might be like.

I disagree, but to each their own. I feel like the humor and stuff like that with the Guardians movies is much more forced on us than it is here. You can tell Gunn was allowed to go all out with this one.

Maybe gotg 2 but not gotg 1 the humor in first one imo, was more organic was never really forced and fit the tone of the movie.

With that said for me The Suicide Squad is the best dceu movie thus far, and shazam being second.

I have to agree with this unfortunately. It's basically GOTG but with blood and guts. Like it was said before, the last 30 minutes of the movie was ok but overall just a Marvel film with over the top violence and dumb potty humor. Which I was afraid of it being. I just wish Gunn would go back to his own original projects tbh. That's where he shines the best.

Well imo marvel movies are mostly good with some great, so idm and imo it's the best dceu movie.

Yeah I didn’t really care for this movie. It was slightly better than the 2016 movie IMO. Probably the 3rd worst on my list of the DCEU movies, just ahead of Suicide Squad (2016) and Birds of Prey.

You like bvs and Josh Justice league more than the suicide squad?

For DCEU placement for me, it is closer to the top. I haven't ranked these movies in a while and I would maybe want to revisit Shazam before doing that, but The Suicide Squad I would say off hand prob makes my top 3.

It was a tie between shazam and the suicide squad for me but, I think this movie might have just edge out shazam for number dceu movie.

There was nothing Star Warsy about GOTG. It was more so Red Dwarf than SW. There was no sense of adventure, or space opera. It was a sitcom in out of space. The aesthetics of TSS was definitely different from GOTG tho. But tonally was still in the wheelhouse of the first GOTG. Fwiw I love grindhouse films.
True. Red Dwarf is awesome though. :cwink:

I don't dislike the Guardians films, but they were never films I watched and went "this is a top 10 cbm". I enjoyed the first one, and didn't care for the second. TSS, for some reason, I enjoyed more than both of those. Maybe it's that Gunn was able to fully be himself here. I think I've only seen the guardians movies twice, while I've watched TSS 3 times so far.

I personally have gotg above the suicide squad, but I have the suicide squad above gotg2.

I’m pretty even on both GotGs and TSS. They all do some things better than the others.

I can't tell you how badly WB has dropped the ball with the Harley Quinn character, if there was ever a character that embodied the phrase "sex sells" it was Harley, yet for whatever PC reason they chose to go away from it, and here we are, back to back flops with that character front and centre.

I talked to a few family members who love DC and comic-book movies in general of all styles and most thought the movie was average or boring. Its a small sample size in my life but Im curious in the word of mouth circles if that same opinion is going around and feeding into this.

Honestly, this is why I have a hard time taking SHH's Anti-Harley/Margot takes seriously. There's usually some weird, biased agenda behind it.

Harley became famous off a kids cartoon...she doesn't need "Sex sells" as a gimmick.

Whether Nloodsport is a rehash of Will Smith character ofcourse that is obvious that doesn't take away from Elba performance in this he was better here than Smith was playing himself in first FACTS.

Wait, so… you’re arguing that the only way for a Harley movie to be successful would be for her to prance around half naked the whole time? Dude… just watch a porn parody or something. I’m sure there’s a film called Suicide Squat or Butts of Prey out there.

Harley didn't become popular for wearing next to invisible shorts and stilettos. She was popular for being a quirky sidekick who was covered head2toe. Losing half her clothes came much later.
