Knights of the Old Republic Remake

I can't seem to find where I read that, I'll keep searching. I hope they revamp the gameplay to be more action centered. Even though I never played the original, I'm not a fan of turn based strategy combat. Maybe they can do both. Satisfy new and old players alike.
Something akin to the FFVII remake would probably be a decent fit.

I swear some of the very early leaks said the gameplay was being overhauled to be more action oriented.

That would be awful. I'd rather they would not remake games at all if they're just going to make them a more shallow experience.

honestly story and game play wise I think the original still holds up for the most part... just needs updated graphics and to patch up a few glitchy parts, mostly with the NPC's, (maybe some updates on the dialog) intrigued by this, but, hope it's not some full over haul that changes the original feel of whole thing

Honestly the combat is not where the bright spots of my memory are. I don't mind what they do with it as long as it's fun to play.

Pretty damn bonkers news. Another reason to thank Capcom for RE2R and SE for FFVIIR. They paved the way.

Whatever they do, I hope they keep tactical battle system. Button mashing can go to hell.

So what kind of graphics do we expect from it? Cinematic level like Fallen Order or something more simple/lower budget?

Since it's a ground up remake I'm assuming they will be using all new graphics and use the latest unreal engine to make it look more modern and cinematic.

I would assume they will also offer voice options for the player character? Isn't that a safe bet?

Those are just tools. Just because it's the latest UE, doesn't mean graphics will have cutting edge fidelity. Though CGI teaser probably hints at Sony's deep pockets.

I'm an old school gamer who played and enjoyed games with a silent protagonist. So I personally prefer no voice. Like classic CRPGs Fallout 1-2, Baldur's Gate 1-3, Arcanum etc... Better for roleplay, since I can imagine the voice myself instead of listening to something predefined, which may not fit with my idea of what kind of a character I'm playing.

If the budget is big enough, they will most likely voice the protag. But it will be just one male voice and one female. Similar to Mass Effect, Cyberpunk etc. More than one is too costly probably.

I'm more worried about what they will do to the battle system. Bigger budget might influence them to go for flashy action to score better sales instead of something less mass-appealing, tactical.

Fair points, but i'm basically just spitballing here. Considering this is being built for modern consoles, I think we can assume it's going to be enhanced and more in line with what gamers see from modern games. By the time it gets released, it will have been just about 20 years since the original first got released.

I could see it going one base male or female, or they might have like a voice slider or voice options for the protag this time around. When they made The Old Republic, it was fully voiced, which was quite a feat.

It's a timed console exclusive. Sony probably isn't involved. Just a little bit of money upfront.

If it were up to me, I'd give the options to have your playable character be voiced or be silent. Like OOB, I prefer the latter for role-playing reasons.

As for the combat, I expect they'll make it more action-oriented. Again, if it were up to me, give the options to the players: have a dedicated classic mode with the real-time with pause mechanic for those who want it.

No doubt if it's a proper AAA remake, it will take 3-4 years for them to make it. And that's if everything goes well. Besides, what's the point of a remake if you won't be going for the latest technical quality. People were ridiculing the new Prince of Persia remake for lackluster presentation. Something tells me people will rip them a new one if it doesn't look like Black Myth: Wukong or at the very least Baldur's Gate III. If Larian can do it...

Having a choice is the best, of course. Infinity Engine/Dragon Age seems like the most viable route for them. It should satisfy both old gamers and new.

for some of the cinematic cut scenes, maybe....
but I can see that getting old fast during normal game play, with the optional dialogue type discussions it just be a lot of awkward pauses/broken speech pattern and tone-al range issues between different lines wouldn't sync up right (especially well making shifts between light side/dark side dialogue lines lol)
also might make for possible spoiler of the main plot twist, if people recognize the voice (or same actor voice is used) between your main, an a different character

I just realized. If this goes really well, maybe we will get a remake of 2, that actually gets finished. :hehe:

How do the original KOTR games hold up? Haven’t played them in many years, but I so loved playing them as a kid!

Not great imo. I actually just played through Dragon Age Origins, their last game properly in that mold, and it feels really ancient at this point.

it still holds up for me, but that might be mostly the nostalgia (probably do a playthough at least once a year) but I also don't play a lot of modern games to compare too, so I don't really care about graphics and such

it has it's bugy moments for an older game, sure, but... I still like it

I played it on my iPad and it was nostaglic for me. I remembered how long it took me to make a lightsaber. LOL.

I've had KotoR in my Steam library for awhile, finally getting around to playing it for the first time, and yeah, it's aged very roughly, it feels weird to play a game like this that feels so familiar due to its influence and not have access to so many basic control and UI features that have since become standard to its genre. I honestly had an easier time getting into Witcher 1 simply because while it's equally rough, it still feels unique because the genre ultimately moved away from a lot of its mechanics.

I’m biased because I replay both KOTORs like once a year, and I just love the world, and the characters, and the story so much that I can look past most of the technical failings. My love of the turn-based combat has definitely gone away though, especially in my post-Dark Souls life where I’m always thinking “I’d rather be playing Dark Souls”.
