Launched in 2018, the European/Japanese spacecraft BepiColombo just made its first flyby of Mercury. It’ll have to perform five more flybys before it finally settles into orbit around Mercury in late 2025. BepiColombo performed similar deceleration maneuvers using Earth (once) and Venus (twice). Turns out, slowing down in space is difficult.
